Two unrelated items of note:

  • While previously I possessed a dim view of coffee, I decided to give one of your seasonal offerings a try, and I can now apologize profusely for my dismissal of all such beverages: pumpkin spice lattes are perfect. Simply perfect. We've nothing truly like it in Quur, save a cinnamon tea that's not nearly so comforting or sweet. If one of you entrepreneurial sorts wants to offer it up year round, I will consistently skulk within your shop.

  • Secondly, I awoke this morning very literally covered in books. It appears that a portion of my library from back home has found its way to me here in Vallo. I recently acquired even more tomes due to the untimely death of an ally/friend/mentor/traitor/wizard/drunk, but I had not had a chance back home to go through the sheer volume of texts. Should anyone wish to make me their personal lending library, the books are wide in subject and varied, including:
    • Fictional tales of the God Kings: Their Lives and Extremely Messy Deaths
    • A History of Notable Witches (this one was banned, and if you damage it, I will destroy you)
    • A discussion of hand-to-hand fighting techniques (common in the Blight)
    • a Vane epic tale that seems to be less about immortal heroes and their adventures and more of a who-slept-with-who-and-details-on-the-how (not mine, don't know where it came from),
    • my tenth year report on the Royal Houses of Quur that very nearly got me expelled (I stand by every word),
    • Poison Plants of the Southern Empire,
    • Gender Politics and the Horsemen of Jorat (for those of you interested in what it means to 'run with the herd', sexually) and
    • my father's book on soul magic, which I will only lend once I am convinced that you're of a sufficient moral character to be trusted with its contents.
Should anyone be interested. And/or kind enough to dig me out of this mess. Literally. I am still buried in books. They're... everywhere.

"Basic"? In my world, that means plain or unadorned. There's nothing basic about a liquid candy bar with whipped cream.

It means that too, but then there's also the other slang definition:

Basic - only interested in things mainstream, popular, and trending.

...I think this is the first time I have ever been accused of being interested in popular things. Usually the accusation is that I'm impossibly dull.

Thurvishar "Basic" D'Lorus here, happy to herald the many delights of the pumpkin spice latte with you anytime, Lady Cohen-Chang.

What makes you impossibly dull?

I'm always happy to discuss the delights of pumpkin spice. Have you tried pumpkin spice coffee cake yet?

I suspect my preference to stay in and enjoy a book would do it.

I've not, no. Admittedly I was skeptical of the gourd in sweet foods when I first arrived. We tend to serve them with a spicy curry over noodles, back home.

There's nothing wrong with a good book.

Okay, but that also sounds delicious. Luckily pumpkin can do both. You should definitely try it.

You'd think not, but apparently, it's the boring choice. I've led a rather exciting life; this place is down-time that I sorely need.

I definitely will. Is it basic as well?

What made your life so exciting (if it's okay to ask)?

Pretty much anything pumpkin-spice has made the basic list.

I don't mind. As of late, my friends and I were on a very long journey together to make a proposal to a neighboring king. Vows were made, tears were shed, murders were had... it was a lot. I got stabbed by my own knife when a kraken picked me up and then I had to talk to my ex, and we still didn't avert a prophecy of (capital letters intended) Doom. So, I'm enjoying being useless.

Fools.

I half want to be like What is your life?, half I shouldn't be surprised by this. Also who the hell names a prophecy the prophecy of Doom?

Right?

It's not actually called that - it's the Devoran prophecy, and there's a series of them - but I hate it, so. Sarcasm. Anyhow. Getting eight hours of sleep is great.

Sleeping, reading, and PSLs. What else have you tried for relaxation?

Well, ordinarily at home, there's a great deal more plotting... I considered learning a new language here. I'm very good with languages.

I asked what you do to relax, and you come back with learning a new language?

Is that insufficient? I'd prefer to optimize my downtime.

But are you actually relaxed, or do you feel accomplished?

I propose that accomplishment can be relaxing. If you'd like, I can write a treatise on it.

That's completely unnecessary. Everyone likes something different. But I would suggest trying new things now that you have the time.

Cards are a start. What are your abilities?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]thatdlorusbrat

Reading minds. But I haven't been able to do it consistently here - I just get emotions, or a general mood. Nothing specific. I've never not cheated at cards. This is a brave new world.

Guess you'll have to rely on dumb luck or skill like the rest of us now. Why don't your abilities work properly here? Is that the norm?

I couldn't say. Someone suggested that the magic of Vallo might have been threatened, and consequently dampened it, and that's as good an explanation as any. Others have apparently had their magic influenced as well - it's stronger here, it's weaker here. A real toss-up.

What are your hobbies. Enlighten and inspire me.

Ah, maybe. I haven't asked too many people about their powers yet. But I guess if you're powerful enough that might make sense.

Theatre, art, music, singing, baking and cooking, training to not die with my adopted brother because that is a very real threat in these places.

Gods, that's a lot. I didn't realize you were a performer. You'd get along with my friend Kihrin - he plays the harp and sings, when he's not trying to get himself killed. How do you find the time?
