Two unrelated items of note:

  • While previously I possessed a dim view of coffee, I decided to give one of your seasonal offerings a try, and I can now apologize profusely for my dismissal of all such beverages: pumpkin spice lattes are perfect. Simply perfect. We've nothing truly like it in Quur, save a cinnamon tea that's not nearly so comforting or sweet. If one of you entrepreneurial sorts wants to offer it up year round, I will consistently skulk within your shop.

  • Secondly, I awoke this morning very literally covered in books. It appears that a portion of my library from back home has found its way to me here in Vallo. I recently acquired even more tomes due to the untimely death of an ally/friend/mentor/traitor/wizard/drunk, but I had not had a chance back home to go through the sheer volume of texts. Should anyone wish to make me their personal lending library, the books are wide in subject and varied, including:
    • Fictional tales of the God Kings: Their Lives and Extremely Messy Deaths
    • A History of Notable Witches (this one was banned, and if you damage it, I will destroy you)
    • A discussion of hand-to-hand fighting techniques (common in the Blight)
    • a Vane epic tale that seems to be less about immortal heroes and their adventures and more of a who-slept-with-who-and-details-on-the-how (not mine, don't know where it came from),
    • my tenth year report on the Royal Houses of Quur that very nearly got me expelled (I stand by every word),
    • Poison Plants of the Southern Empire,
    • Gender Politics and the Horsemen of Jorat (for those of you interested in what it means to 'run with the herd', sexually) and
    • my father's book on soul magic, which I will only lend once I am convinced that you're of a sufficient moral character to be trusted with its contents.
Should anyone be interested. And/or kind enough to dig me out of this mess. Literally. I am still buried in books. They're... everywhere.

Well, "I grew up mostly normal" was more a polite summation of "I got good at covering the lack of normalcy", and "therapy is amazing", so don't worry - not too normal. I hate the notion of banned books. Talk about a belittling, autocratic notion.

So, you did the whole "fake it 'till you make it" thing. Nice.

UGH, same. If anyone starts banning books here, just point them in my direction. I'll poison them.

A tried and true hobby amongst those overburdened with an undue amount of teenage angst.

Excellent, make sure you save some for the rack.

I pity the people that don't go through the trials of teenage angst. Imagine having to do it all in your 40s?

Of course, sharing is caring! And if you have any more history books show up, can you just save them for me to borrow? Or well, technically, for Gansey. He'll want to read them.

A friend of mine is of an immortal race (Vane). Remembers all of his past lives as if they were yesterday. Still going through a truly mind-blowing case of the "it's not a phase, Mom". Truly something to behold.

Of course. I'll set some aside on... hm... how does Gansey feel about the successive line of the Emperor? I realize it sounds dull, but it's not a birthright; you fight for it in an arena. Farmers can and have been Emperor.

But the real question is what kind of phase does an immortal have? Is it a goth phase?

Oh, Gansey'll eat it up. If he hasn't mentioned Glendower to you by now it's because maybe he I'd be surprised. Hearing about farmers becoming emperors is, like, probably the best thing I've heard.

Well, his mother is actually the goddess of Death; I think she'd be proud of a "goth" phase (if I'm understanding the reference correctly). Teraeth's been acting out by befriending a rival Vane clan - the Vane clan known for their pastel hue and obsession with beauty and sunlight.

We've talked some, about some of his more unusual qualities. I'll set aside the book on Simillion's life (the first emperor, and a farmer) and of the lineage therein. Lots of nobles murdering nobles.

Oh, that kind of phase. Feels rebellious and I like it. If you asked me a year or so ago if opposites actually attract, I probably would've laughed. I guess it's not so bad that your friend is acting out.

Just keep the history books coming my way. We'll make good use of them for some light nighttime reading, even if nobles are murdering nobles.

THURVISHAR.
He told us that he told you about Cabeswater, if those are the unusual qualities you're talking about and not just his boat shoes.

There are worse phases. At least it's not poetry, thank the gods.

Light nighttime reading! I do like you, Blue Sargent.

It is indeed. I hadn't meant to trespass - I have an ability to hear things, sometimes, particularly secrets. It's a fascinating thought - a sentient forest.

Did you have a poetry phase?

I am very likable! Please feel free to come say that very loudly around the market so everyone can hear at any time.

Do you have to be close to people to do it? Is it only people? Could you hear the secrets of

The worst sort of poetry phase. Life was meaningless; I was insatiable.

I'll keep that in mind.

Thue.
Yes, nearby. At home, I could hear anyone who didn't have magical capabilities to block that sort of thing. It made me a very useful tool for the wrong sort of person. But the ability is much weaker, here. I believe when I overheard Gansey's thoughts, I was near you - he mentioned you were something of an amplifier.

No chance any of your poetry showed up with all your books? 👀

Thue.
Do you think you could hear if my da Oh, yeah. That's me. I've learned how to turn it on and off while being here, but it used to be "all amplifying, all the time". Super helpful to psychics and other magic users, but it mostly involved me standing around and just existing. I try to keep it off unless someone needs it. It's safer that way.

Why, would you like to read about the endless torments and lost loves of a Vane queen, and how her immortality both brought her life and made her pine for death? Because I could do that.

Thue: A dangerous ability - one perhaps more so than my own. Albeit a lonely and frustrating one, I'd wager.

Sometimes. Not so much anymore, since I won't kill Gansey with it. Is it better for you to not have to hear everyone's secrets here?

It's--- you know, I still enjoy it. As long as you have an appreciation for the dramatic, I dare say you'll find value in it.

Thue.
Was your killing Gansey with it ever on the table? And-- there are a lot of things I have no business nor desire to know, so in a sense, it's a relief. It does make me miss my friends more, however. Seems strange not having them in my head.

Henry can vouch for my appreciation for the dramatic.

Thue.
It was always on the table. I already killed him once with There was, or well, technically still is a curse. We just found a loophole?

Sorry, I know mentioning stuff like this is a big red flag reminder that you're not home and there's people to miss.

Who cursed you? For what purpose? (Feel free to tell me to shove off; I ask a lot of questions.)

No, it's not a problem - I'll think of them regardless of whether or not I mention them. You're quite lucky to have so much of your group here.

Nah, you're not asking too many questions. It's not like it's a secret, I'm just used to it? Like, literally my whole house is filled with psychics who were constantly telling me I was destined to kill my true love with a kiss. Which, trust me, I know how ridiculous that sounds. But then Gansey came along.

A few of them were here for a while before I was? Maybe you're just the first one and the rest will follow.

I mean to offense when I say: fuck destiny. I’ve begun to hate prophecy. I doubt it lent you much comfort when you were told of what awaited you and Gansey.

Oh, destiny gets the big middle finger. I ended up kissing Gansey anyway. And I love two people and I can kiss Henry just fine without killing him.

I'm genuinely gladdened to hear that.

Well, the status of your kissing was mostly unnecessary, but the sentiment was very inspiring.
