Severus stared into his teacup. The answers weren't there, and he wasn't sure he wanted to find them.

Potter wanted him to open up part of himself. To care. Severus wasn't sure he could. He'd had nobody to rely on when he'd hidden from his father; when he'd faced the Marauders or when he'd repeatedly looked into the flat, inhuman face of Voldemort and lied. It was just Severus, alone.

Potter wanted Severus to trust him. To give something of himself that Severus had buried for so long it was as mummified as Tutankhamen.

Severus stirred his tea; he stared.
