date night
Who: Remus Lupin + Lily Evans
When: Friday night or weekend night, whichever
Where: A small restaurant where the quality of the food depends on the number of diners
What: Remus has asked Lily out on a "date". Of course it's not a date date but that's what he calls it.
Rating/status: G/finished.

There was no wine or chocolates or flowers to be found on Lily's supposed place in the table -- just a plate, an empty glass, some polished cutlery and a napkin on top of the plate, clumsily folded. No one said Remus knew how to fold napkins without a wand, after all.

That day, before he went to work, he left in Lily's room a book from the library about the Salem witches and their trials and a note of where she could find him that night at 7:00PM -- a small restaurant smack dab in the middle of the city with a menu riddled with all-time American cuisine. That left him an hour to get ready, smell good and all that, and he spent his hour wisely by coming down to Prospect Park and spending some time with "his" owl, Godric, who he thought was starting to grow rather fond of him. All those rats and insects were paying off, thank Merlin.

Now, at 6:54 PM, Remus had just successfully slipped his wand inside his over-sized pocket and was stroking the frayed edges of his leather strap with the wand-catch, that one he likes to wear around his right elbow and attach his wand, too. The part of the catch had finally started to become loose and Remus loathed throwing it away. It was his most comfortable wand-strap and on top of that, it was his only one. He rather doubted Muggle New York would have anything just as good to offer him.

Sighing through his nostril, he flicked his gray-streaked hair off his shoulder -- and then was reminded that he should probably consider getting his hair cut before the weekend ended.

For being about ten or eleven days away from the next full moon, Remus was starting to look white and dreary again -- but a smile was all it took to wash the years away from his face and he did just this when he found that Lily had arrived. "Hello there, Lily." Partly he was glad she accepted his invitation.

Although in hindsight, he though that she didn't quite have reason not to, anyway...but at least not yet. After all, there was an explanation why Remus had invited her out and not just anyone, too. That, and how he was keen to specify that if she should wish to come along with someone else, it should only be Sirius Black. Was she having suspicions, he wondered?

Remus had no doubt but he looked happy as he invited her to take a seat, a spot that was parted on the right by another ready chair for the imaginary Sirius who he figured wasn't invited along. But well, if he wanted free food, the chair was there for him.

Slipping his wand-strap back through his right arm, he asked, "Did you find the book I left you?" She most likely did but it was a good (if stupid) prompt for conversation.

"The one on top of the note?" She asked, brows lifting as she smiled a little. "Must have missed that one," she teased him. "Was there any particular reason you chose that subject matter or was it just a bit of light reading you thought I might fancy?"

She smoothed her skirt over her thighs as she gazed across the table at him. "So what's this all about then?" She prompted. She wasn't honestly interested in beating around the bush, and him inviting her out of the flat ... well, it struck her as a bit odd. Not completely, but enough that she reasoned he had something to say he didn't want the others hearing, for whatever reason. Well, other, singular, since Sirius had been invited.

"Not that I mind a night out," she said. "I was just curious if there was more than dinner involved in this."

"The second one," Remus said to answer her inquiry about the book while he tugged down his full top. "You'd been reading a lot lately so I thought I might offer a little for your taste." And of course, he had to be predictable on doing it.

"There is talk, of course," he went on while he laid his napkin over his lap although he kept it away from covering his pocket entirely. "Talk and food, between the two of us." And before he could go on, a waiter had already approached them with three sets of menu on his arm. "But I suppose we ought to get that out of the way first."

"Are we expecting somebody else?" the jolly, chubby man asked with a bright smile.

"Yes we are, but we can start," Remus lied and he smiled at Lily as he said this. Besides, even if Sirius wasn't around, an extra seat made the affair look less like a date and more like dinner. "Would you like some appetisers to begin with, Lily?"

"No, we aren't," Lily corrected because she hadn't invited Sirius out and she saw no reason to continue the charade and make the poor waiter think to expect someone else tonight. She did flash Remus a little look because she didn't think this was usual for him, but ... well, it was strange times. "I didn't invite him," she said to Remus in case he was somehow actually under the impression Sirius had been invited and was late.

Nothing about this entire situation rubbed her the right way, and it all felt drastically sneaky and underhanded, and that wasn't how she operated at all. Still, she'd at least see what this was all about before making any sorts of judgements.

She smiled to both Remus and the waiter. "If we could have a moment to look over the menus?" She suggested; she didn't know what they had so how could she decide what she wanted?

Oh well, okay, Remus supposed it was better off to be honest about the amount of dinnerware they would require. So he said nothing to protest Lily's honesty and allowed the waiter to go away with the menu and the extra plate and stuff he had reserved for a ghost. So now, there was only one seat in-between them and that was going to go pretty soon, he was sure.

"I am under that impression," Remus assured Lily of Sirius' attendance (or lack thereof) as he flipped open the four-paged menu. "I just didn't want this to look as intimate as it does. And just to be safe, friend," he made sure he looked at her as he said: "I am not trying to take advantage of Prongs' absence and courting you. That is quite unlike me, you know that." He was fond of Lily, admitted, but he would never take his relationship with her to a deeper level.

"I will admit, though," he went on after a moment as he surveyed the restaurant's choice of meat. It wasn't as if he needed the time to think, though, Remus was upfront with his love for meat, but it helped to keep his eyes busy while he thought of the words he needed to say, collect them, stitch them together and then undo them if they didn't strike a tone that he liked. "I did want to talk to you...personally. And the reason why I only wanted Padfoot as extra company is because...you are the only two people I would wish to talk to this about."

The waiter had returned to fill their glasses with water and take away that extra seat. Now, more than ever, Remus felt the gravity of what he wanted to talk about.

Looking over his menu, he asked, "How is your grandson faring?"

"Why does it matter how it looks?" She inquired. "Who are we trying to impress here? Or ... not impress? Whichever." Honestly, she didn't understand what he was playing at, all this deception and staging. "It wouldn't matter if you were doing that or not, anyway. I love you as a friend, Remus, and it doesn't go beyond that. I think we're well aware of where our relationships lie, with our without James' presence here." Of course, that brought to mind her recently rekindled friendship with Severus. Would that have come about if James was here? She doubted it, so who knew what else would change?

It was all very tiresome, thinking about it. What was all right, what wasn't, and all the rubbish in between.

"Yes. You excluded Ginny because you'd like to talk about her. Fine. We might as well get it out then." She deliberately ignored the question about Albus because she wasn't interested in letting go of the topic he was trying to deviate from.

"Ginny is only a part of this," Remus said calmly as he set his menu down and faced his friend. He wasn't surprised that Lily had caught on so quick, he wasn't trying to hide the state of his acquaintance with Ginny Potter, after all. He was civil with her, sure, and he talked to her when it was asked of him or when it was proper to do so -- but he was only barely warm to her.

"How are you feeling right now, Lily?" he asked...almost out of the blue. "Now that you know where this conversation is about to lead to..."

"I don't actually know where it's about to lead. That would defeat the purpose of having the conversation, wouldn't it? If I already knew the outcome." She exhaled. "I think it's shady and underhanded, honestly. I think if you've something to say about her that will affect the entire flat, she has a right to be present for it. I don't think this is like you at all, Remus, honestly."

She fixed her emerald eyes on him as if she could somehow see where this was going in his face. She had some suspicious, she supposed, but Ginny had never said anything directly to her about it, nor had Remus. It was just as well it was finally coming to a head; she was tired of the tension in the flat because of whatever was going on.

"If it isn't like me at all, then I have only myself to blame," Remus admitted without the vaguest hint that he was pausing. "Perhaps I am not very good at doing this, or doing what I want to do but I know that I will have to get it out at the soonest possible chance." Right now, though, he was wondering if now really was the right time to do this.

"Please bare with me for a couple more minutes, and if you should feel like leaving..." he shook his head, "then I suppose there is nothing I can stop you with." Because this conversation isn't about to be taken lightly, he thought.

"How do you feel about Ginny and Albus?" As he asked this, Remus was still gathering ideas in his head, still gauging how he ought to let them out, how they ought to sound like...

"I should think it's fairly obvious, isn't it? I'm not exactly the sort to go hiding my emotions and intentions. I like them both very much and I'm glad for the chance to get to know them. It isn't as though..." She trailed off and shrugged. If they couldn't change things, he knew exactly what she was going for with that. In the future where she died, she didn't get to meet either of them.

"How do you feel about them?" She returned, toying with the edge of her menu. She honestly wasn't very hungry now and she didn't think she was interested in spending money on food she was only going to pick at. She was still trying to build up enough money to ensure they would all still be covered in the event something happened to one of them and they couldn't work.

Remus breathed carefully as he flicked his tongue through his lips and thought. He thought, thought, thought...

"Not the same as you do," he said honestly, in a quiet voice as though it would bother the next table and in his face, it was clear that he wished that wasn't so. His brows were wrinkled and there was something akin to disappointment or maybe even sadness in his light frown. "I wish I can say that I enjoy their company," he shook his head, "but I can't. I just can't..."

The waiter had returned with the sun on the smile on his face, "We ready?"

"Give us two cups of tea, please," Remus said automatically as he turned and looked at the chubby man whose expression had somehow become confused by his instruction. "That will be good for now."

"We don't serve tea."

"Whatever, then." Of course, he could have just decided on coffee but right then, he just really wanted the man to go away.

The waiter must have felt it, so he excused himself and strutted away.

Remus let out a quiet sigh as he returned to his friend before him. "I'm sorry...but I just cannot shake the feeling that something isn't right. This can't be right."

Lily rolled her eyes. "Of course it's not right, Remus. We're displaced years into the past, trapped in some Muggle city. Nothing about this is right. And I don't expect you to feel the same way about them. They're not your family."

She'd done the best she could in a warped situation, and apparently it wasn't enough. She had a brief moment of wanting to run away somewhere quiet and just hide until it all went away, but she wasn't like that. So she sighed quietly and shook her head.

"So what do you want to do then?" She lifted her weary emerald gaze to him, her lower lip caught between her teeth, wanting more than ever to just go home and fix things and leave this screwy place behind.

"The city and the displacement are not only what I meant when I said that this isn't right," Remus said, his hands flat on his sprawled menu, himself leaning forward a little. His years had returned, visible under his eyes, the state of his hair and the color of his lips but it was nothing that he could help. "I had also meant Ginny and Albus. Their arrival," he said quickly to supplement his thoughts. He could feel the stress even with the way that he gripped the menu on the table.

But even Lily was...becoming less calm, which was an effort in itself and if Remus didn't watch himself then something...unpleasant, for the lack of a better word, might come of this evening affair. The wizard sighed as he forced himself to loosen up a little, pulling himself to rest his weight against the back of his seat. He'd lifted his hands, intending to run them through his face but as that might send a message of unrest, he dropped them the moment he realized what he was doing.

"If you can hear me out, Lily, I would appreciate it greatly," he began again as he looked up to her eyes. "But...I just..." he licked his lips from the inside, "...I just really want you to be careful, Lily. Be careful, be wary, be cautious around..." 'these people', he meant to say, but he was worried that that was going to set her off. So, "Around." he said to conclude what he wanted to say. "These are uncertain times. It would not do for us to be unguarded so easily..." The way the Potters apparently were, when Voldemort had killed them in the future. Remus didn't want that happening...anytime.

"Their arrival, along with the dozens of others. Why aren't you paranoid about Sirius' arrival and all the news that came with him? Why buy that, but question Ginny and Albus?" She assumed it was because Sirius was a known factor in their lives, whereas Ginny and Albus weren't. But they were her family. One just had to look at Al's eyes to know he was related to Lily somehow.

"Everything is uncertain, Remus. I trust them. Whether or not you do is entirely up to you, obviously, but for what it's worth, I think you're being ridiculously paranoid. Why would they have any reason at all to lie about who they were, upon arriving?" She regarded him evenly for a moment before she exhaled and looked away.

"Ginny's been living with us for weeks," she pointed out. "I think if she was as malicious or nefarious as you seem to think she is, there would have been some sign of it before now." Well, perhaps malice was a stronger assumption than necessary, but honestly the paranoia was ridiculous. Yes, she understood a certain need for caution, but she also liked to think she could read people well enough.

"That was what I thought about Peter, too," Remus said quietly. "A man I had known for ten years, a man I trusted with my secret..." ...he trailed off -- because, of course, Lily's argument about Sirius was also valid. What if Sirius was a liar? What if Sirius...had, God and Merlin and everything else high and mighty forbid, been the one who killed the Potters?

Two cups of coffee came soon after, and this time the waiter said nothing as he collected the menu Remus handed to him. He left just as quickly as well.

"I agree," Remus said after a moment, "I could have doubted any of you. But I know you and Sirius, Lily. I know you from three years ago, and I know -- and feel that Sirius is from my time. He could have been...perhaps...just a day or a week or a month into my future. He is exactly how I remember him to be...when I had been displaced."

He shook his head, "But Ginny and Albus..." He looked at Lily, again, he had been staring at the coffee for too long, perhaps trying to find some form of an escape in it but no, no escape. Remus had to get through this conversation and he was determined to do it. "What do I know about them? Nothing. How can I be certain they really are who they say they are? I have no defense against them.

"Perhaps I am just paranoid -- ridiculously -- as you say I am," Remus went on. "...but can you blame me if I am scared? Scared that we live with someone who can..." betray, kill...

"I do not want to lose you, Lily," Remus said instead, abandoning his previous train of thought, breathing, feeling his heart against its cage. "I am fighting to save you, and finding a way to get us out of here to save you...and I do not want to imagine what would happen if...someone," by which he meant possibly Ginny or Albus, "would get ahead of us and kill you in this city.

"And I do not want a fight with you -- not when I know I might lose you very soon." The possibility never left his mind.

"Well, there's your problem. You can't read people as well as I can. I never took to Peter like you all seemed to and I can't for the life of me imagine any series of events in which I willingly consented to put my life in his hands. He was always so ..." Lily hesitated and shook her head. "I don't know. Squirmy," she concluded. It didn't quite convey what she'd wanted, but she knew Sirius would have died for James (and she supposed later, for her as well). She never would have said the same of Peter.

Lily sighed. For a long moment she contemplated the floor beside the table. "I understand what you're saying, Remus. I do. And it's fine to be cautious but you're taking this to ridiculous levels. What do you think Ginny's going to do to us, really, that she hasn't already had chances to do before now?"

She shook her head, utterly disgusted when he outright said the word kill. "If I'm going to die here, it's not going to be at the hand of someone we've been living with for weeks. I can handle myself against either of them if I ever had to, which I wouldn't." Exhaling softly, she shook her head before she stood up. "I appreciate the concern, Remus. But scale it back, all right?" She pushed in her chair and turned away.

"I'll see you home if you're still up. I'm going for a walk."

"Lily, wait!" Remus pushed his chair back as he stood up but he went no further from his spot by the table. He expected Lily to be upset, of course, who wouldn't be upset given these developments?

But...but what?

His hands were in fists, holding onto the table and his pants as he thought about...why he had called Lily, why he was on his feet why...

Remus didn't think, he couldn't. Not now, not while everything feels like they're all by an edge. He still disagreed with Lily but what if he was wrong? But what if she was wrong? Like they were wrong with Peter, his good friend no matter what she might say of him...

"Forgive me, Lily," he said. "Please forgive me, Lily." That was all he could say.

"I'll see you at home," was her only response to that. She did at least give him the courtesy of looking back at him, though her expression was dismayed. She didn't like the idea of discord between her friends and family, especially when some of them resided in the same flat. It couldn't be helped, she guessed, and she reasoned that with time things would settle down and smooth out.

She trusted Ginny and Albus, and she thought eventually Remus would come to trust them as well. Or they'd find their way home and it would cease to matter either way.

With a last glance to him, Lily made her way out of the restaurant.

Remus didn't hold her back.

He simply stood where he called to her as he watched her approach the door and disappear through it when the waiter opened it for her and when he couldn't see her anymore, he returned to his seat and closed Lily's menu.

He breathed through his nose as he carried his head with his left hand and gathered some of his hair from the side of his jaw. Well, at least now he knew how much Lily trusted them although he never expected for it to happen in so little days. If Albus' great granddaughter came over, would she say the same? Remus didn't want to know.

But what if Lily was right? What if they really just got lost? What if Ginny really was Harry's future wife, not some sympathizer of Voldemort who didn't have the honor of being branded with the Dark Mark and was just biding her time until everyone dropped their guard around her? The way--

No. Remus will never. Until he fully understood Ginny Potter and Albus Potter, he would never.

Taking up his cup of coffee, he sipped from it. He was alone, the waiter seemed to be avoiding him, and the night was still young.

He still had time to think.
