date night
Who: Remus Lupin + Lily Evans
When: Friday night or weekend night, whichever
Where: A small restaurant where the quality of the food depends on the number of diners
What: Remus has asked Lily out on a "date". Of course it's not a date date but that's what he calls it.
Rating/status: G/finished.

There was no wine or chocolates or flowers to be found on Lily's supposed place in the table -- just a plate, an empty glass, some polished cutlery and a napkin on top of the plate, clumsily folded. No one said Remus knew how to fold napkins without a wand, after all.

That day, before he went to work, he left in Lily's room a book from the library about the Salem witches and their trials and a note of where she could find him that night at 7:00PM -- a small restaurant smack dab in the middle of the city with a menu riddled with all-time American cuisine. That left him an hour to get ready, smell good and all that, and he spent his hour wisely by coming down to Prospect Park and spending some time with "his" owl, Godric, who he thought was starting to grow rather fond of him. All those rats and insects were paying off, thank Merlin.

Now, at 6:54 PM, Remus had just successfully slipped his wand inside his over-sized pocket and was stroking the frayed edges of his leather strap with the wand-catch, that one he likes to wear around his right elbow and attach his wand, too. The part of the catch had finally started to become loose and Remus loathed throwing it away. It was his most comfortable wand-strap and on top of that, it was his only one. He rather doubted Muggle New York would have anything just as good to offer him.

Sighing through his nostril, he flicked his gray-streaked hair off his shoulder -- and then was reminded that he should probably consider getting his hair cut before the weekend ended.

"I'll see you at home," was her only response to that. She did at least give him the courtesy of looking back at him, though her expression was dismayed. She didn't like the idea of discord between her friends and family, especially when some of them resided in the same flat. It couldn't be helped, she guessed, and she reasoned that with time things would settle down and smooth out.

She trusted Ginny and Albus, and she thought eventually Remus would come to trust them as well. Or they'd find their way home and it would cease to matter either way.

With a last glance to him, Lily made her way out of the restaurant.

Remus didn't hold her back.

He simply stood where he called to her as he watched her approach the door and disappear through it when the waiter opened it for her and when he couldn't see her anymore, he returned to his seat and closed Lily's menu.

He breathed through his nose as he carried his head with his left hand and gathered some of his hair from the side of his jaw. Well, at least now he knew how much Lily trusted them although he never expected for it to happen in so little days. If Albus' great granddaughter came over, would she say the same? Remus didn't want to know.

But what if Lily was right? What if they really just got lost? What if Ginny really was Harry's future wife, not some sympathizer of Voldemort who didn't have the honor of being branded with the Dark Mark and was just biding her time until everyone dropped their guard around her? The way--

No. Remus will never. Until he fully understood Ginny Potter and Albus Potter, he would never.

Taking up his cup of coffee, he sipped from it. He was alone, the waiter seemed to be avoiding him, and the night was still young.

He still had time to think.
