Who: Jack Harkness and Sookie Stackhouse.
When: Wednesday Evening.
Where: Corner of 5th Ave and 58th Street.
What: Arrival.
Rating/Status: R, Open.
Jack Harkness didn't sleep anymore.

With sleep came nightmares and guilt of days gone by and he couldn't afford to feel any more guilt for the mistakes he's made in the past. As many times as he'd told himself to let it all go, it was harder than hell. No matter how far he ran and how long he had been gone, nothing would bleach the sins off his skin. While the stain of blood was still sticking to his hands, he wasn't letting it show nearly as much as he had that night in Wales when he'd left Earth behind. He had believed that was for good, leaving the planet, but he had been fooling himself and ... well, there really wasn't anyone else to fool anymore, was there? And that was his fault too.

Time seemed to run much slower on Earth than it had for him out in the stars. He had spent a great deal of time hopping from space bar to space cantina, galaxy to star system, hopping his way from ship to ship and bed to bed and for what? In the vain hope that he could somehow outrun the guilt, outrun the misery and outrun his shame as his own actions. However, these things didn't nearly hold the same luster as they had when he was in the Time Agency.

Jack just wasn't that man anymore.

He had told Ianto once that he wasn't sure where his place was. It had taken losing him to realize where his place had really been all along. Now Jack felt even more out of ease and out of place in the one place that he had always felt at home -- the stars. So he really had no place to call his own, so what was he to do? He had nothing else to do and nowhere else to be.

Right now, Jack was sitting in his rented quarters on the Nebulous Galaxy and he was trying to get his wrist strap in working order. Jack had commandeered some 49th century tools and had set himself to work on getting it right again. Right now, all it was good for was tethering him to sonic signals and teleporting him from one place to another. While that was alright at first, Jack wasn't satisfied and was tired of relying on the signals of inferior ships and technology to get him where he wanted to go. He had been working for quite some time and he thought that maybe he was finished. It was making the same sounds that it used to, beeping in the ways that indicated it was online and in working order. Jack stared at it for a long minute, the thing spread out on the table before him as if it was going to grow legs and walk away.

What was he hoping to accomplish with this? Where was he even going to go now? He didn't know. Jack stood up and made his way to the bed, picking up the great coat that he'd laid out there and pulled it on. He adjusted the collar and looked back over his shoulder at the wrist strap sitting on the table. He exhaled slowly and walked over, picking it up and strapping it back onto his left wrist. He made sure that he had his sonic blaster (he really had missed that thing when the Doctor had stolen it) and shoved it into the pocket inside his coat. He took one look around the room. "Sayonara," he said and pressed the red & green buttons together.

In a moment of vertigo and his eyes clutched tight, Jack took a step forward and lost his balance down several stairs to the concrete. He opened his eyes and looked around whilst sitting on the stairs. Was that really ... he quirked a brow at that. "FAO Schwarz ... " he said out loud, standing up and dusting his coat off. He looked around him and noticed something odd but nothing out of the ordinary. At least he was on Earth. The 'WHEN' was the issue. "New York City," he groaned, reaching up and scratching the back of his neck. "Lovely."

Before waking up on the ground, the last thing Sookie remembered was taking the hand of Claudine with the promise that she could leave this place. She was so tried of everything around her, Bill, Eric and all the other supernatural shit that was going down. She just needed to get away from it all and that time in the hospital, when she first saw Claudine and the other fairies was amazing. Now, she was ready to go to that place and to forget about Bill and Eric. But, when she opened her eyes, she felt the hard and cold concrete of a sidewalk beneath her.

It took Sookie a few moments to come to it and when she finally did, she was not in some beautiful and magical place like she thought she would be. She was on a sidewalk, surrounded by buildings. She had to be in the city, just what city? When she finally stood up and started to walk, she could tell that the city was huge, much bigger then any of the cities that she’d ever been to.

As Sookie walked down the street, she could hear millions of thoughts of all those around her. Most of it was just jumbled up and there was too many at the moment for her to actually zone in on one. She wasn’t used to being around this many people. That, and the fact that she was very disoriented at the moment.

Sookie noticed the guy standing at the corner and went up to him. "Excuse me, this might sound a bit odd, but where am I?" She ducked her head down for a moment in a bit of embarrassment. She didn’t want to seem like some whacked out crazy person. She was also trying to see if she could maybe listen in on his thoughts.

Jack was feeling a little nauseated and disoriented from the trip with his wrist strap. Okay, so maybe he had gotten it to work -- it had brought him back to Earth, but he was still trying to discern what time period he was in. It was definitely New York, but nothing about it screamed that it was from an era he hadn't been through already. Then again, it had been some time since Jack had been to New York, so really, he couldn't even begin to tell what was new and what wasn't. He exhaled slowly and took his eyes off the buildings as he heard a car horn.

He turned his attention to the street and made his way to the corner to get a closer look at the cars on the street. The Buick Riviera. Ford Galaxie 500XL Skyliner. And Ford Falcon. Jack frowned and reached up to scratch his head. He had always been into cars and had read up on classics on slow nights in the Hub when he couldn't sleep.

Something about this was different though. These cars didn't look classic or tricked out. Some of them actually looked brand new. But that would suggest ... "1960s," he muttered to himself. "Son of a bitch, I'm in the 1960s," he had his hand rest on the back of his neck, lost in thought. Of course the strap had gotten him to Earth, but had kicked him back into the 20th century. Again. He looked down at his strap and opened it to see that it had malfunctioned again. "Piece of junk ... " he murmured and hadn't even noticed the girl coming up to his side until he heard a voice beside him.

Jack looked her over and she looked just as lost and confused as he did. He thought fast and put on a smile, hiding how confused he was and the fact that he'd just been talking to his wrist. "Not odd at all," he said and looked her over. "New York City," he motioned him. "FAO Schwarz over here," he motioned across the street with his fingers. "Central Park over that way."

"New York? Get out of here?" She looked around the city then back at him. "I mean if this is New York, then what's with the cars and the way the people are dressed." The idea of time travel didn't even occur to Sookie because that just couldn't be possible. Not like she was really the best to judge on what was possible and what wasn't. She'd seen the impossible become reality ever since the vampires stepped out of the closest so to speak.

"Only seen it in the pictures and tv before, but sure don't remember it having cars from the past. You sure this ain't somewhere in Europe or maybe another realm? Or wherever it was that Claudine wanted to take me? Do you know Claudine?" Maybe she was stupid to trust the other woman, she really didn't know anything about her or the fairies, just that she was part of them.

"Hold on, you said it wasn't odd that I asked where I was. Do you know something? I mean, it's not normal for poeple to not know where they are usually. At least I don't think so."

Jack shook his head and shrugged a little. "That's where we are, I am guessing, unless we're on some other planet with the exact same set up as New York City ... " he slowed down his last few words when he actually looked at her for a second. He crossed his arms over his chest before looking around again, lifting one hand to wiggle his fingers toward the cars.

"I'm still trying to figure it out myself," he remarked, his eyes going back over toward her. "Claudine who?" That was a curious name. Then again, Jack lived a long life and who knows, he may have known a Claudine at some point.

Jack pursed his lips together and pulled a face. "Hmmm, I know where we are. Again, judging by the cars and how they look new instead of minted and refurbished, I'm thinking somewhere in the mid-1960s." He knew how it was possible, but some people didn't. He would feel the need to explain he was sure. "However, I know how I got here, but I'm not entirely sure how you got here."

"That's it! It must be another planet. I wouldn't have believed you if Bill didn't tell me I was part alien, mostly human though." Sookie didn't really know why she was rambling to this guy, he just seemed nice besides all that sadness that she felt coming from him. "Claudine was suppose to take me where they're from, so maybe that's it, another planet." It somewhat made sense to Sookie, but also deep down, she didn't believe that was the truth about this place. "I just thought it'd be different, last time I saw her it was amazing." Sookie just took off rambling off all her thoughts. She knew she shouldn't be telling all this to a stranger, but he seemed just as lost as she was.

"Promise you won't think I'm mad if you don't already?" She could hear his thoughts about time travel being real and possible and quickly took a step back. There was so much going on inside his head; he was different then the average human.

Jack had taken to looking around, watching the cars go by and trying to get a better read on just when in the 60s they were. He couldn't really tell because he couldn't actually get a pinpoint just based on the cars alone. He'd have to find a newspaper or something to have a look at in a minute, but for right now, he looked over at this woman again. The alien bit made him raise a brow, but not in the way she thought. "Ah, but there are aliens all over the place on Earth," he said and smiled at her a little bit, trying to make her feel somewhat better.

"No, I'm quite positive it's Earth," he said, waving a finger and looking around. He didn't see anywhere to get a newspaper like he had planned. Oh well, he'd have to find a store to get one at. "1960s Earth, to be exact," he replied before turning to look at her again. "And this Claudine ... what exactly kind of creature is she?" Jack was going with the fact that she was supernatural creature or an alien since the woman had mentioned aliens.

When she told him not to think her mad, he smiled reassuringly. "Oh no, I don't think you're mad," he replied and watched her take a step back. He could feel her poking around in his head; it was like the time Tosh was doing it with the alien amulet. At that time, he didn't want his thoughts prodded, but ... well, times had changed and Jack just didn't really care. "Find anything interesting in there?" he asked before tapping his temple with his finger.

"No way? Really? Aliens all over the place on Earth?" Sure, vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters and who knows what the fuck else of the supernatural sort was real, but getting into aliens was a completely different territory. "If only poeple knew all that's out there." Sookie shook her head. People knew about vampires, but everything else, that was a whole different story.

"I was told I was part alien, but I just figured, well, I don't know. I didn't really have time to think about it, was thinking more about the other thing that I was told I was. I just figured if there was more like real aliens out there, people would know about it." Then again, for so many years poeple didn't know about vampires and Sookie herself recently started to find out about all the other supernatural beings out there.

"Every day there's something new," she said more to herself then to Jack. Especailly now with this time travel, Sookie's world turned upside down more and more with each passing day.

"Fairy, found out awhile ago that I was part fairy. Guess they'd mate with humans a long time ago and someone in my family did just that. I was suppose to leave with them, I'm not sure where exactly, but it seemed better then where I currently was." She sighed at the thought of Bill and Eric. "Ended up here instead. Last thing I remember was taking Claudine's hand and a bright white light."

Sookie raised her brows in surprise when Jack made it clear he knew what she was doing. "How do you know?"

Jack made an mhm sound at her question about the aliens and he shoved his hands in the pockets of his trousers. He looked over at her and smiled a little. "It's sort of funny how insignificant it all feels once you do realize what sort of creatures reside out there," he said looking toward the sky and squinting. "Not all aliens are bad though. The majority of them just want to live in peace and do their own thing." He turned his head back toward her when she started speaking that she was part alien.

"Well, I was born on another planet, you see," he said. He hadn't told anyone that before. "But by the time I was born, the human race had spread out over stars and galaxies, so really ... I'm not very alien," he exhaled slowly. "I don't find it strange at all though, you know," he looked at her then as she continued to speak to herself.

He frowned when she said the fairy thing. Well, they could have been different fairies than the ones who killed Estelle. Just another love that he had killed in his exploration of truth. It was going to be that way for the rest of time, why did he dwell on it so much. "And where were you before you came here? I get the feeling it isn't somewhere you wanted to be or that was very safe," he said, looking away again. "White light you say?"

He was confused for a second but turned to look at her again when a car roared by them. "I can feel it. I'm slightly telepathic. I have had years -- " Too many to count and more than she'd believe. " -- of mental blocking training. Where I used to work encouraged it. But since -- " I lost everything. " -- then, I don't really care anymore. I haven't got anything to hide."

He put on a charming smile. "So what do you see?"

"You're telling me. Can't believe we were so foolish to think humans were it." The signs were there all along, but poeple were too stupid to realize the truth. Stupid or too scared. "Good to know they aren't all bad. Usually are in those films." Once upon a time Sookie wouldn't think to compare them to the films or what people think of when they hear the word alien, but after what happened with the vampires. She also believed in giving them a chance and thought they had good in them, she learned the hard way that, that wasn't the case. At least she didn't think so, with what Bill did to her.

Of course once he said he was an alien, Sookie changed her opinion once again. He didn't seem like a bad guy or a monster and sure wasn't little and gray. Maybe aliens weren't bad then, it was just so hard to tell now a days who was telling the truth and who wasn't. She was glad that she could read his mind, that made it a lot easier to figure him out. His mind was harder then usual though, there was just so much in there; lifetimes worth of stuff.

"Alien, but not alien," she nodded. "Can't believe we get out there one day. And, you don't look very alien. Bit crazy to think there are people that look just like everyone else, but are from another planet."

"Bon Temps Louisiana, lived there my whole life, love it there, but found out someone I trusted and loved lied to me. More then just lied, lied to me about everything and used me, so I was ready to get away. I'm so sick of dealing with vampires and werewolves! It brings you nothing but trouble and death." But, something told her she'd never really be able to get away from that.

"Makes sense, I can't read you as easily as other humans. Not sure how I'd be able to read aliens though, just know I can't read vampires. That you've had years of experience, so many that you think I won't believe you. It strange, there's just so much in you." She titled her head to the side and looked at him. "How old are you? And, what do you mean you lost everything?"

"Mmm, humans just generally don't believe in something they can't see," he replied, looking at her as he stood there. "Ghosts? They automatically assume that just because they can't see it, they don't exist. Same with aliens. They've never seen one, obviously, they aren't real. Humans in general operate under the notion, 'I'll believe it when I see it.'" He shrugged. "Doesn't mean they're bad or that it's a bad thing, it's just a close-mindedness in a way. You have to have the proof to believe something is real."

Jack smiled a little, genuinely as he looked at her. He wasn't alien in the typical way people believe aliens to look, but that was something else altogether. "Mm, well. I am human, just born on another planet. By then the 21st century definition of alien doesn't really exist." Pause. "Well. The 21st century definition of a lot of things aren't relevant anymore."

He nodded a little. "Louisiana, love it down there. Enjoy the crawfish," he squinted at the sky for just a mere moment before looking over at her again. "Well, I haven't actually ever met a vampire before. A real one anyway, that wasn't an alien posing as a vampire," he exhaled a little. "Werewolves, yeah. They can be, but they're highly misunderstood. At least the ones I've read in the legends anyway." He looked at her seriously a second. "Do they hurt you or ... " he was probably overstepping bounds by asking that, but he felt the need to anyway.

Jack looked at his shoes when she asked that. "Over two millenia," he said and looked over at her seriously. "I lost my family. My daughter, my grandson. My job. The person I loved. My friends. Everything."

"Got that one right." Sookie sighed. The man was right about the way humans thought. Sookie wasn't exactly a believer in things before, but she also wasn't exactly like other people. She knew there had to be more out there because of her gift. She just didn't realize just how much was out there.

"Parents use to be scared of me cause I knew things. Didn't want to accept my power," she looked down for a moment. "Most poeple just don't talk about it, like they can just make it go away." Sookie had been dealing with that for her whole life.

"Makes sense. Can you imagine the looks on some people's faces if they knew one day humans were born on another planet!" Sookie laughed. That whole thought excited her!

"You haven't?" Sookie is more then surprised. "I just figured with you being from all over the place, you would have by now. I didn't meet one till recently myself, but living in a small town I didn't expect to, really. There's a vampire bar close by us, but I never planned on going before then. My friends a werewolf and he's a good one, but some other ones that he knows are bad, drinking vampire blood and almost worshiping them." Sookie shook her head. "It's a huge mess if you ask me."

"They are trying to live in peace, or so they say. Fell in love with one, thought I could see the good in them. I thought he was different, but I found out he wasn't. I guess fairy blood is something vampires love and he knew all along." Every time she thought about it she just wanted to scream and cry. She was so stupid to trust Bill.

"You're that old!?" Sookie said in excitement. "That's so cool!" But, then she realized just what he was saying after and the fact that he must have lost so many people over those years. "Sorry, I didn't mean to. It's just, not every day you meet someone that isn't a vampire that's, that old." She stepped towards him and placed a hand on his shoulder in comfort. "I'm sorry. I know it must be tough." She could feel his sadness.

"That's just human nature though. Anything that's out of the ordinary or doesn't line up to what their version of normalcy is strange and doesn't belong," he looked over at her, his hands still in his pockets. "Hmm, an ability like yours just doesn't go away but again, it's just one of those things that people don't take the time to understand as just 'being' what it is."

Jack laughed at her excitement to the revelation that humans eventually do master space travel. "You get out there. Soon, even. I can't tell you how soon, but soon," he said and looked at her. "Nope. Most of the vampires that I have met were of alien origin, so I haven't met a vampire of fictional lore." Long pause. "I mean, you know, the ones who suck blood to live and all of that. I've never met one like that. I reckon I would be their perfect meal." Being that he never died or stayed that way.

"All creatures have a degree of good and evil. Humans can be the worst in my experience," he watched her. "Back home," he had to pause for a long while. "I mean, I settled here a long time ago. On Earth that is. Wales ... overseas. Back there, my job was to investigate the strange, alien and unusual. It was my job to prevent alien invasions and revolutions of the alien kind," he exhaled a little. "So there is nothing that you can tell me that would surprise me or bother me in the slightest."

He waved a hand as if to say he'd gotten off track. "But not all aliens are bad, they just want to explore and learn just like we do." He thought about it. "We had these creatures called weevils. They were a humanoid -- " he realized he'd have to explain this. " -- they walked up right like humans do, I mean. But their faces were more like a rabid animal. They were usually very gentile creatures that communicated to their pack telepathically. We aren't sure whether they were aliens or humans that had de-evolved or what," he looked out at the street. "But when something alien was happening, they'd come to the surface. They lived in the sewers you see. They'd only attack when something was coming."

He exhaled slowly and thought about it. "I don't think they exist anymore. Or if they do, not here," he looked at her and smiled when she asked him that. "Yeah, I am," he laughed a little. "And the losses are recent. Last couple of years or so," he replied. "Most of them were my fault."

"I can't wait till that day. Suppose I might not be alive then, but still nice to know about." Sookie understood that he was from another planet and all, but still thought it was rather strange that he never met a real live vampire before. She would have figured that by that time, they'd be all over the place as well. "What do you mean you haven't? Do things change for them? Just a few years ago they came out, are fighting for equal rights as we speak. The Japanese made this drink for them called True Blood, suppose to be just like real blood so they don't have to drink from humans." However, Sookie knew that, that wasn't exactly true and there were vampires out there pretending to live the clean lifestyle.

"I've seen some humans do nasty things." Everyone could be a monster. She listened careful to what he had to say, finding herself very intrigued by what his job was. "Sounds like you had a cool job, I'm just a waitress." Sometimes Sookie wondered how a little waitress from Bon Temps ended up with such an eventful life.

"Oh wow, almost sounds like they were misunderstood, poor things. Wish I could meet one, wonder if I could communicate with them. You said they did telepathically." Now that Sookie knew there was all sorts of aliens out there, she wanted to learn as much as she could.

"You shouldn't blame yourself. I'm sure that whatever happened, you did your best. Everyone has their time."

"At this rate, you never know," Jack said and looked at her, shrugging. "I've never met a vampire that kills humans and drinks their blood for sustenance," he answered honestly. "Then again, you could be from a whole alternate universe different from mine where these things exist for you and they don't for me." That seemed to be the most logical explanation; if vampires existed in his time, he would have surely seen them by now.

Jack scoffed at the comment about humans. "Agreed. They can be the worst monsters out there," he remarked, looking at her. "I have seem them kill their fellow man for food for no reason but sport. They will sacrifice innocent children to a race of aliens for the sake of saving their own skin." Jack pursed his lips together. "Sometimes I wonder if the monsters aren't the werewolves, vampires and aliens, but the human race sometimes." He paused. "Myself included once in a while."

He inhaled and licked his lips, turning his head to the street for a second. "I'll keep an eye out. You might be a great deal of help to them and for us to understand them better." He paused and shrugged a little. "Ah, I feel like Atlas sometimes. If I shrug, the world will fall off my shoulders and into tiny pieces."

Jack paused and looked at her for a long while. "Yeah, you're right. Everyone does." He sighed. "Except me, that is."

"Now alternate universes are real?" Sookie just looked at him for a moment before laughing. "Maybe I should slow down." She didn't see why that couldn't be real either.

"I haven't seen all that, just a man killing woman because they slept with vampires and poeple wanting to hurt vampires just cause of what they are. That's some horrible things you've seen men do," Sookie shook her head. "I think all of us have the potential to be monsters, humans and supernatural beings alike. Just part of our nature if you ask me. Aren't we all really just animals?" Sookie knew that some people were good and some just down right awful.

"Better not shrug then," she said in a slightly teasing tone, trying to lighten the situation some.

"True, you and vampires. Though, even they can eventually have their time. You really can't die? I mean like nothing can kill you? It just seems like everything has some weakness."

"Yep," Jack answered and looked at her, smiling a little. "For every decision we make, there's an alternate universe created doing the opposite," he explained and he left it at that. He knew that this could be overwhelming for people who knew what they were doing, let alone for people who were new to this sort of thing.

"That's the problem. What's to say that they have the right to do that?" he asked her. "These creatures have the right to live here, same as human beings do. Humans hopefully aren't so short sighted to think that they were here first," he laughed a little. "This planet was inhabited long before man took over, but you can't really tell anyone that or they'll ... basically shoot you." He snickered.

Jack full out laughed at that statement. "I'll try not to. At least someone else has taken over the title, hopefully."

He made a sound with his mouth and looked at her. "I can, I just don't stay that way," he said, watching her. "I have plenty of weaknesses. That the people I love can die. That's my weakness. It's the only way my enemies have learned to punish me efficiently."

"Can only imagine the alternate universes out there then, especially those concerning vampires. There's been so many choices lately concerning them. I suppose mine is the one where they made the choice of coming out to the public." Sookie wished she could visit the other universes now, it would be interesting to see how different her life would've been without Bill, Eric and everything that happened to her lately.

"Should've figured that one. So stupid of us to think we were here first." Sometimes it really did amaze Sookie just how stupid poeple were as a whole. "I don't know, I still think everyone should respect each other and get along." In Sookie's dream world that would be the case. She hated fighting and wrong doings and just wanted everyone to be happy.

"So you can die, but come back? You don't think they'll ever be a way to keep you dead?" It's not that Sookie wanted the man dead or anything, she was just genuinely curious on the matter. Just then, it hit her that she didn't even know the man's name. "I'm so sorry, where have my manners been, I don't even know your name and I'm asking you all these personal questions."

"It would make your head hurt to think of them all," he said, simply and noticed there was a little cafe down the way there. He thought about it and looked at her. "You want to get some coffee or something?" He could really use the chance to sit down and figure out where the hell they were and what his next course of action was.

"It's not stupid, really," he thought about it. "It would be boring though. Every creature is ingrained with the ideology that to fight is to survive. I'm not a psychologist, but let's just say, it's really messy, but it's just the human and instinctual condition to fight and not get along." He fought a lot with Gwen. God, that statement made him miss her arguing with him and yelling at him.

Who knew that would be something a man could miss. A woman yelling at him.

"Yeah," Jack answered and looked at her. "I'd explain it, but you seem a little overwhelmed as it is," he replied and watched her, laughing a little. "Oh, right, yeah. Same," he held out his hand to her then. "Captain Jack Harkness. Pleasure to meet you."

"Bet it would," she smiled. "Sure, much better then standing on the street." This might not really be the best time for sitting down and drinking coffee, but from the way things looked, it didn't seem like they'd be finding a way back home anytime soon. So why not?

"True," she agreed. "Just horrible the way some folks go about it. Just would be nice if the fighting wasn't killing and hurting people like that. So many people take it to the extreme," she shook her head."I've heard the thoughts of some of those type before and let me tell you, it's horrible. Wish I never had to hear such things. You hear about it all the time, but to actually be in the person's mind, now that's just a whole nother story."

"Maybe later." She wanted to hear more, but he was right, she was a bit overwhelmed at the moment. "Nice to meet you Captain Jack. Should I call you Captain or just Jack?"
