She Does Not Have An Appointment.
From the creator of Antique Bakery, Fumi Yoshinaga's latest series: Kinou Nani Tabeta? Or, in English, What Did You Eat Yesterday?

What Did You Eat Yesterday? has everything that Yoshinaga does best, and which we loved so well in Antique Bakery: adorable slice-of-life, cute men, and hardcore food porn. Seriously, when Fumi gets her food geek on, you want to eat the pages. And WDYEY goes into such detail describing the process of making and serving food that you can actually use those scenes as recipes.

Don't read these manga on a diet.

I may include a cooking sequence in a later entry, but for now, let's stick with the cute men!

Pluto: Of Astro Boy, ice cream, and megalomaniacal robot teddy bears.
So, in my very first post I mentioned that I fell in love with the works of Naoki Urasawa. To this point, however, I've only posted scans of one particular series, Monster. So how can I demonstrate this wasn't a fluke? Let's dive into another series.

A perfect moment: Inspector Runge
Okay, so you have an wrongfully accused man chasing a guilty one. You need a cop to chase the innocent one, too, right? Monster provides us with a rather creepy one named Runge (Lunge in some translations and the anime).

Runge has two defining characteristics. The first, is that he has an odd mnemonic device to store information. Basically, he types the information on the air, and it's stored in the computer in his head. Then simply make the appropriate gestures, and the information is retrieved. This is both very creepy and oddly cool, and the almost robotic nature of those gestures highlights his second defining characteristic: he is one of the most single-minded people in all of fiction. This is the trait we'll be examining in our perfect moment.

One perfect moment: Roberto
Behind every great criminal genius is a tough as nails enforcer, fanatically loyal, murderously tough, and just plain deadly to encounter. Monster gives us Roberto in this role.

And if that's not enough to draw you in: slash!

A perfect moment: The Nameless Monster
Okay, I've fallen in love with the works of Naoki Urasawa. So, I figured I would stop lurking and share a bit from one of his best series: Monster. Monster is...well, it's hard to describe without spoiling it. At it's heart, it's about a man wandering the world (well, Germany for the most part) and trying to set right a wrong from his past. To do this he has to hunt down a monster. Along the way, his strong sense of morality causes him to intervene in others problems, all while the police chase him and he struggles to find out more about the monster's past (the better to track him down).

But this post isn't about that man. This is about his quarry. He goes by many aliases. Many seek him out, convinced that they can harness his massive charisma and intellect for their own purposes. But the monster has his own agenda, and people who come close to him for too long have a nasty habit of dying.

Four Swords+ part three: "Day of the Tentacle"

(manga: read right to left)

A bit of a late entry, but part four should be back on track. Nothing to do with either Theme Week, but it does contain blatant subtext that even context can't make better. Unlike the other posts, this is less plot advancement and characterization and more of an eclectic collection of "special" moments in the series, but if you want to catch up on who these people are:

Previously, on Four Swords+... (CHUN-CHUN.)

Our hero, Link, was struck by a radioactive magic sword, from that day forward becoming Quadruplicate Lad.

The four Links could never really get along, even in the face of certain doom. So without the mightiest superpower of all to save them (it's teamwork), the merciless river rapids destroyed their stolen boat and sent the Links to an early, watery grave.

Of course, because this is Japan, that one Seduction of the Innocent moment is completely eclipsed by the homoerotic subtext that follows...in spite of the minor obstacle of all the characters involved being the same person. (God, I love this series.)

Really brings up the age-old question of "does that make it narcissism, incest, or masturbation" doesn't it?

...What's that? You say I've been skipping something? Oh, right. The entire plot. There's plenty of that, even with some subtext that's actually subtle, in the next installment. That bittersweet ending might still be coming, but it ain't here yet.

On the next Four Swords+...

Four Swords+ part two: "Four's A Crowd" (and other unoriginal headlines)

(manga: read right to left)

Previously on Four Swords+...

One Link was not enough. (And Zelda was kidnapped, but that's not important. Yet.) So meet the Links!

It's all fun and games on the road: sparring, studying, and making Red do all the cooking. But then they discover something that threatens to tear their young group apart: They discover girls.

And Other Inappropriate Uses Of Four Links

Four Swords+ part one: "My Anti-Drug is Crack"

(manga: read right to left)

At first, I didn't expect or even try to enjoy The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords+ manga. I looked at a few pages out of curiosity and it just seemed so silly and pointless, but...

...somehow I simply could not stop reading. I told myself it's just yet another cheap cashin on the part of a longlived cashcow videogame franchise, yet I can't bring myself to care. I mean, it's a comic about Link! Who is actually four Links! Links who bicker and cry and yell at each other but ultimately learn lessons about friendship and teamwork and fighting over girls, just like a Saturday morning cartoon. And of course despite being in a black-and-white manga, they can only distinguish each other by the color of their clothes, somehow. What's not to love about that? But when I saw there was even going to be a fifth, evil Link as the villain, that was the moment I knew I was hooked. A near-100% Link cast? Can't say no to that.

...And that is why 1 = 4.

On the next Four Swords+...

Dope week: Surprise, surprise . . .
One Piece is not exactly the type of Manga where you expect to find recreational drug use, but there you have it, in this scene from OP 514:

Read more, and be amused ... )

Also, if I could get a modly opinion on something - what exactly is the policy on posting manga? Is it one third of the single chapters, or one third of a volume? This post is legal either way, but I was just thinking - there's a case to be made in favor of applying the one third rule to volumes, since most manga haven't ever been published in English as single issues. Also, some manga have chapters of wildly varying length - Hellsing, for instance, has chapters eight pages long, and chapters thirty-four pages long - making it difficult, if not impossible, to post anything cohesive from the shorter chapters while staying under one third of them.

Just food for thought. Sorry if that issue has been already settled, somewhere where I missed it.

An unusual lesbian manga: Honey & Honey
Takeuchi Sachiko's Honey & Honey is an autobiographical manga. Though some of it is educational (intended to show people what Sachiko's life is like as a sexual minority in Japan, and clear up misconceptions), it's mostly funny stories about Sachiko and her friends.

The art is not for everyone, but I think it's cute and suits the style of the story. If you like Plica, you'll probably like this too.

Amazon-fail and Yoshinaga-win within.
As many of you already know and are rightfully and righteously freaking out over, Amazon.com has started de-listing books with GLBT content from the Amazon rank sales charts. (Google-bombs away!)

Upon hearing this, with a sinking feeling, I started surfing Amazon's selection of graphic novels, and yup, they appear to have de-listed one of my favourite shounen-ai manga, featured below the cut.

Transient Son by Shimura Takako
I started reading this on a whim and it turned out to be the best darn thing I've read for months, maybe even years.
Transient Son (Houro Musuko)(or Wandering Son) by Japanese cartoonist Shimura Takako is the story about Shuichi Nitori, a gradeschool boy coming to terms with transexuality, gender identity and puberty.

No fetishization, no gimmickry. Just...

Fuan No Tane is Watching You Masturbate
Photobucket

As one of the manga's chapter quotes remarks, an alien presence can be disturbing just in itself, regardless of whether or not it is actually hostile. That goes double when the presence in question is staring at you with its creepy, creepy eyes.

(WARNING: Possibly NSFW due to nudity)

(Note that things with freaky eyeballs are so common in Fuan no Tane that this is actually going to be a two-part post!)
