Dope week: Surprise, surprise . . .
One Piece is not exactly the type of Manga where you expect to find recreational drug use, but there you have it, in this scene from OP 514:

Read right to left. Not my scans.

This happens immediately after the big battle on Shaboady Archipelago, which resulted in the Straw-Hat crew getting scattered. Luffy, in particular, after being teleported away by Bartholomew Kuma, winds up on an island he doesn't recognize, where our scene opens:

On second thought, that could almost be an anti-drug PSA, given how it all turned out.

Also I've no idea what's up with that one girl's dialogue. I can only infer that she has some verbal tic that makes more sense in the original japanese.

Also, if I could get a modly opinion on something - what exactly is the policy on posting manga? Is it one third of the single chapters, or one third of a volume? This post is legal either way, but I was just thinking - there's a case to be made in favor of applying the one third rule to volumes, since most manga haven't ever been published in English as single issues. Also, some manga have chapters of wildly varying length - Hellsing, for instance, has chapters eight pages long, and chapters thirty-four pages long - making it difficult, if not impossible, to post anything cohesive from the shorter chapters while staying under one third of them.

Just food for thought. Sorry if that issue has been already settled, somewhere where I missed it.

Well, that's what you get for eating wild mushrooms randomly. (Oh, there's also death within minutes, but Luffy is a fictional character so he has built-in immunity to death.)

...what... the...

See, I keep having people tell me that One Piece is good, if weird, but AGHGHHGHGHH MY EYES. I just- I can't stand that art style. I can't. It pains me. It's not technically bad, it just makes me wince every panel.

Guess it's not my thing.

...

...You know the one woman is talking in quotes. Maybe she is ACTUALLY talking exclusively by quoting things? I dunno.

My first thought was echolalia, except that she isn't repeating exactly what's been said.

Maybe she has a movie announcer voice and is repeating the basic sentiment everything in a dramatic fashion?

"In an age of heroes... only one man can stop this boy from dying."

*we miss you announcer dude!* ;_;

You poor person. Reminds me of my relationship with garlic. Really I feel for you this is the most popular comic in Japan and deservedly so. My sister is bothered by the art in Spectacular Spider-Man but loves the story. So I supose this is a common problem.

I can't even stand enough of it to find out if I'd like it or not. I mostly started seeing it through clips of the anime, but still... *shudder* I am not sure why. I mean, I loved the Trigun anime, and lots of that was certainly silly as hell. It's just something about the style.

At any rate, popularity does not necessarily mean that any given person will like anything. So I'll just assume it's not my thing. Heh.

That's sad. I've been an anime fan for over 10 years and watched hundreds of series... and One Piece is my second favorite series of all time. It's been more than 400 chapters and well 7 years for me and One Piece is still going strong. The art style annoyed me at first, but I watched a few episodes and I got over it.

One Piece has the same kind of vibe that a lot of really popular Scans Daily series has, so I'm surprised more hasn't been posted.

Also to the original poster: I asked the mods and they told me that the same rules (1/4 chapter) apply to manga that's been serialized.

...I wouldn't necessarily it's sad that I don't like it for a fairly predominant reason.

And... hm. That would be terribly difficult for Hellsing in particular, really. Specially those 8 page chapters. Ah well, good to know.

I imagine that in this case the blurry scans are a contributing factor, but yes, the art is very much an acquired taste.

...not really. I have a skeeve reaction simply upon seeing a certain one of the characters at all.

And it's not just that. Something about the style divorces my brain from any emotion that the story attempts to invoke whatsoever. Which... well, would probably break the story, were I to read it. (I had a friend go "But look at this!" and explain that a certain moment was supposed to be bad-ass, but... it was the character I can hardly look at without a negative reaction, so it didn't work out too well.) I mean, I bought the Gung Ho Guns from Trigun as badass. The friggin Gung-Ho Guns. With the giant shoulderpads of death. I just can't go with this.

...

Yeah, it's not the blurriness. It is just in no way my cup of tea.

It's sad how far fan translations are in One Piece compared to the official release.

Sweet Pea (the amazon with the speech quirk here) actually frames many of the things she says as if they were book titles -- I've seen it translated as things like "Volume 1: 'What Exactly Might This Be?'" or "The saga of 'A Race Against Time.'" Nobody's quite sure why.

One Piece can definitely get weird sometimes, but it's one of my favorite manga ever. I think the Sabãody Archipelago arc is one of the recent high points -- not stinting on either the wackiness or the darkness that's been shown to underlie it sometimes. Slavery, institutional racism, corrupt, untouchable nobility, a real feeling of how much bigger the world is than just our protagonists...
