Light up another one, Tony
These clips are from THE AVENGERS# 5, May 1964 and #7, August 1964. Script by Stan Lee, art by Jack Kirby. Tony Stark has to wear the Iron Man chestplate all the time, because it keeps a piece of shrapnel from moving into his heart. When he lets the armor's power run down, that piece of metal instantly starts digging deeper, causing pain, dizziness and weakness. (This didn't seem the way such an injury would actually work, but it was great drama.) We got a lot of panels of a tortured Iron Man crawling doggedly toward an outlet to recharge his chestplate; he was quite the suffering hero, having to use up his power in a fight and then pay for it. Despite having a damaged heart that could only be kept functioning with machinery, the idea of quitting cigarettes didn't seem to occur to Tony, though. Steve Rogers and Bruce Wayne and Reed Richards smoked pipes, Nick Fury and Ben Grimm lit up stogies. But Tony was satisfied with a pack of Lucky Strikes. (I would have loved it if Kirby or an inker had added one panel of Iron Man with a cancer stick protruding from the grille of the Iron Man helmet. Just once.)

1964 might as well be another planet if you're in your twenties today. People smoked EVERYWHERE. Airplanes, restaurants, movie theatres, stadiums. Nobody thought anything of it. People smoked in supermarkets and ground out the butts on the floor. Doctors smoked in their offices. Teachers smoked (but students weren't allowed to). After the Surgeon General started hitting the public over the head with a 2X4 about the dangers of tobacco, habits gradually changed and laws were changed. Today, you see the furtive "cigarette outlaws" sullenly huddled outside buildings on their breaks. But it wasn't always today.

The final defeat of Darkseid and the end of the Fourth World Saga
No, for real.

Jack Kirby conceived the various Fourth World books to be part of one epic saga with a beginning, middle, and end... a maxi-series, if you will. Unfortunately, low sales forced the cancellation of each series, although on the bright side, this did free up the various characters to make later appearances in the DC universe. In 1985, Kirby wrote a graphic novel called The Hunger Dogs designed to bring the saga to a close, although DC editorial prevented a climactic Darkseid-Orion showdown from truly closing the book, even though The Hunger Dogs was evidently non-canon. Still, it's an interesting look at Kirby's intentions, thwarted as they were.

Great Stan Lee dialogue
Think about what the Impossible Man is saying in this panel from FANTASTIC FOUR# 11, February 1963 (a thousand years ago).

Stan scripted these stories so quickly, as he was writing and editing nearly the entire Marvel line-up at the time. This gives the scripts much of their adlib, impromptu nature; and once in a while, Stan batted out a line of genius with really giving it much thought.

What's the one thing a Cyclops would never say?
"My eyes"...? Really, Stan, were you paying attention or just trying to get the issue in before deadline.

This is from TALES OF SUSPENSE# 10, July 1960. Art by Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers, natch. Here's a better look at that ol' one-eyed giant from mythology.

Wait, how does that work again?
Figure this one out. It's a sequence from "The Return of Doctor Doom!" in THE FANTASTIC FOUR# 10, January 1963. Script by Stan Lee, art by Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers.

So. Alicia Masters is a talented sculptor (well, her father was the Puppet Master, so you can see how she grew up with the materials around her), despite the fact that she's blind. She touches people and things to get a sense of what they look like and carves statues that are quite accurate. So far, okay, not out of the limits of the possible and (by comic book standards, quite modest a claim).

Yet how does she create these little figurines of finks like Dr Doom, the Sub-Mariner, the Skrulls? The Fantastic Four had only met the Mole Man once at this point, certainly hadn't taken any photos of him.(The statuettes are in great poses, by the way, very expressive of the subjects' personalities). Did Ben talk her through the process? How long would that take? Weeks, months? ("Naw, honey, the Miracle Man's waist was slimmer...")

There's only one answer that makes sense to me. Despite the fact he had fingers as thick as cigars, with only three fingers and a thumb on each hand, Ben was actually the sculptor! He was using Alicia as a front, because he thought his artistic inclinations were too sissy for a guy in 1963...

Fantastic Four #5: "The Fantast Four Meet... DOCTOR DOOM"

I saw a comment from [info]magnetic_regina asking whether the Debut of Doom had been posted, and amazingly, it hasn't. Rectified!

"Prisoners of Doctor Doom!" was published July, 1962. After much deliberation, I narrowed down the preview image to just one of the many crackalicious panels:

One Perfect Moment: Darkseid
Having seen a lot of villainous perfect moments, I've noticed a common trend. A lot of bad guys talk about how evil they are. Green Goblin plays around with a Gwen Stacy doll. The Joker teases Babs. Etc, etc. But when you're really evil. I mean, when you're dag-nasty bad? You don't have to advertise.
