Fantastic Four #5: "The Fantast Four Meet... DOCTOR DOOM"
I saw a comment from magnetic_regina asking whether the Debut of Doom had been posted, and amazingly, it hasn't. Rectified!
"Prisoners of Doctor Doom!" was published July, 1962. After much deliberation, I narrowed down the preview image to just one of the many crackalicious panels:
Inside: the exciting one-page origin story of Doom. Guest-starring product placement The Incredible Hulk, and Blackbeard the Pirate.
Somewhere, Doom plots:
"The Fantastic Four!! Hah! Little do they dream that they are naught but pawns in the hands of Doctor Doom!" -- Doctor Doom.
(As the Thing will discover, the net is also electrified. Making it asbestos... that conducts electricity.) Doom threatens their lives if they don't offer up Sue as a bargaining chip.
Then he tells the other three to come, too... So he must have, like, been secretly really wary of Sue's awesome powers to make sure she was the best-restrained like that. Yeah. That's it.
Doom reveals that the yellow panel where the three were standing is his time travel gateway, and sends them off. The first thing they see is two pirates arguing over a giant sack of pirate-clothes, so they're set for disguises. And from there, armed with superpowers and a complete disregard for the butterfly effect, it's a whirlwind of getting kidnapped to taking over the pirate ship to taking over two pirate ships.
Yep, all this time Blackbeard's real name has been Ben Grimm. Damn time travel. Somehow they figure the first treasure they find is the one Doom's after--presumably because "Blackbeard" must have only actually existed in this time period for a few hours at most.
Unfortunately, there's a snag:
Fortunately, the snag hits a snag (and the pirate ship is destroyed):
But of course, Doom was right to fear Sue, even captured:
Somehow short-circuiting the console opens the "escape door" and lets Sue out of the control room.
When they break out of the Doom fortress, Johnny does something to the killer-alligator-moat that I still don't understand. (How'd he raise the ground up to the water level?)
And then Doom takes off with a jetpack.
ETA: Cut a page.
ETA2: Cut up the page to just fit under the limit. Jetpack! (And re-added the "swear you will set Sue free!" panel, which got deleted by Photobucket for some reason.)
