10:54 pm [seawolf10] [Link]	Comics you really should read... I'm in the process of dredging up a couple old recommendations of mine. First on the list is JLA: The Obsidian Age. This was the crowning point of Joe Kelly and Doug Mahnke's run on JLA, a few years before Infinite Crisis. A mega-arc so big it took two trades to complete, this story could have been even better than it was. A little more refinement, a little more thought during the writing process, and Kelly would have crafted a masterpiece. sigh Ah, well. Even the flawed version that we got was tons of fun. Time travel, sorcery, and a substitute JLA (consisting of Nightwing, Green Arrow, Major Disaster, the Atom, Hawkgirl, Jason Blood, Zatanna, and others) stepping in to deal with a present-day crisis while the 'regular' JLA was dealing with a threat in 1000 B.C...that period's version of a Justice League (hereafter dubbed as the "Ancient League"), based out of ancient Atlantis, and acting under the impression "our" JLA intended to destroy the world. I'm just going to post the beginning... 02:43 pm [perletwo] [Link]	Mr. Miracle's funeral, Justice League America #40 I had a request in an earlier JLI post I did for a page of Superman and Batman talking after Mr. Miracle's funeral. Naturally, I can't just do the one page, because the whole funeral is so awesome. Six pages of a 22-page comic, plus preview (plus a few non-comic images), not my scans. So yeah, starts out with big fight with Despero, which J'onn ends... ( but at what price? ) BTW, this seems as good a post as any to throw this out there. It didn't strike me back in the 80s because I hadn't seen the movie, but now that I've got both the first JLI trade and the Omen series box set, I'm wondering if deMatteis modeled his Max Lord on Sam Neill as the adult Damien Thorn? 08:58 pm [runespoor7] [Link]	Batman would call this Proof #2681 that Gotham Is Too Much For Superman To Handle Mark Waid's run on The Brave and the Bold was pretty, pretty crack that gave us some truly unforgettable team-ups. In The Brave and the Bold #16, the team-up is Superman and Catwoman, and it is awesome. The story takes place in the loose continuity of "a few years ago", so you're encouraged not to nitpick at the continuity too much and just relax and enjoy the crack. It’s in the latest issue of The Comics Journal (#298) and like the cover states, it’s a brutally honest take on Von Eeden’s early years, working at Marvel Comics, the demise of Thriller, his relations with Lynn Varley & Frank Miller, industry politics, racism, lawsuits, and much more.
