I want to know why Jimmy never wore a frock on Lois & Clark.

Though I am amused that they took the time to say hey guys, he may be dressed as a lady but he still wears MAN UNDERTHINGS.

Because Teri Hatcher didn't want to risk Justin Whalin looking prettier than she did?

I still think one of my favourite moments in L&C is when Lois and Jimmy are tied to a missile about to detonate and he's convinced they're about to die, he proceeds to launch into this rambling, hideously embarassing confession about the fantasies he's had about her (including the deathless line "Oh Jimmy, come to me and I'll make a real man of you"), whilst Lois alternates between mild horror and utter boredom.

Suffice it to say that when Superman saves his life, and he still has to face Lois at work the next morning, poor Jimmy almost wishes the missile HAD detonated. :D

<i>Just Say Noah</i>! Oh man I am such a or that show. I've watched season three I dont know HOW many times, and Jimmy's dream still makes mcringe-laugh every time.

Actually you have reminded me, I think once he <i.did</i> wear ladies' clothing.e. the villain of the week had some sort of freeze-everyone gadget, which he used to switch the clothing of the Planet's staff. Jimmy had Lois' (tight) suit, and she was left in her surprisingly fancy basque, posed with a cigarette.

Hurrah!

Unless of course the fancy basque was originally Jimmy's and it was more of a straight (no pun intended) swap.

"No girl of mine is going to earn more than I do"

All things considered, bearing in mind that this is the Silver Age, we should probably be grateful that this story doesn't revolve around Jimmy going to elaborate lengths to get Lucy fired so he can continue to earn more than he does without having to work harder.

That would have been too logical and realistic. Worst of all, there would be no excuse for crossdressing in that scenario....woe!

Don't sell Jimmy short, he'd have found a way. He'd probably have cross dressed to become an air hostess in direct competition with Lucy, seeking to outdo her at her own job.

Superman was around and he heated the iced coffee with his heat-vision just for fun so that we could see what you were going to do next

So what you're saying, Clark, is that Superman was in on the joke and decided to hang around the Daily Planet all day helping screw with Jimmy (and making innocuous thought-bubbles in case Jimmy had become telepathic?), and you were the only one who noticed him using his heat-vision on that coffee? You who happened to be nowhere in sight at the time? You who have just the right hair and build for Superman and would in fact be a dead ringer for Superman without your glasses?

What a funny coincidence! Let's all laugh and go get cake!

Good point.

Everyone talks about the Golden Age WW's bondage/dom tendencies, but the way Lucy treated Jimmy in the Silver Age is VERY much like a dom/sub relationship.

There are nematode worms at the bottom of deep see trenches, creatures who have never seen the light of day in a hundred thousand generations, who would reflexively assume the dom role over Silver Age Jimmy Olsen.

What lesson, exactly, does Superman think Jimmy is going to learn? That he is undeserving of a higher wage, despite another company being willing to pay him it? That he should make his career choices based on hanging around his 'friends' rather than desire for success? That ladies get more presents?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]psychop_rex
2009-07-01 04:06 am UTC (link)
I don't think there IS a lesson; I think it's more along the lines of 'Ha ha! Jimmy thinks he can get one over on us! The poor sap! Let's mess up his mind!' Silver Age sadism at its finest.

"I'll watch out as SUPERMAN, my secret identity, that Jimmy isn't hurt too much!"

Yes, just in case someone hasn't put together -- by Superman's Pal SIXTY SEVEN -- that Clark Kent is Superman.

Obviously letting in a whole bathtub full for a bubble-bath was much quicker than just putting the dress back on. Riiiight.

And much as I hate to admit it, Jimmy really does make a pretty woman, even with the Prince Valiant haircut. Hopefully the whole thing made him reconsider some of his misogynism. No wait, it's the silver age.

And I can't be the only one who originally thought he picked the L.L. name to get Superman's interest, and that it worked when Clark kept "rescuing" him?

Why do I get this feeling of acute, psychological horror--the kind Hitchcock or Cronenberg might detail--lurking just below the surface? Jimmy's anxieties about deserving a better wage and the possibility of his girlfriend being the "bread-winner" of the relationship, feeding into the creation of a feminine alter-ego that's more successful than him at everything... one who makes eyes at married men and says "Ha!" when youths cat-call her... one who is willing to lose 5000 dollars and repay it out of his (her?) own pocket just to make a point... oh, did they really think Jimmy could just end it?

No, Leslie Lowe wants to live, even if people have to die. Certainly, no one would notice if Jimmy was just a bit too slow the next time a gangster threw a grenade at him, his signal watch just a bit too hard to activate. And then the funeral of Lucy Lane and that mysterious figure in the widow's black, watching Jimmy, always watching, even when he's alone... with a mirror.

"I'm the only girl for you, Mr. Olsen."

Then come the phone calls in the middle of the night. She says she loves him, that she is him, that she's the only part of Jimmy that values himself. Everything else is worthless, weak, a joke. Superman's pal indeed.

It must be the plot of some mad scientist or gangster. Right? Or it could all be his imagination. He'd ask Superman for help, but it's just a girl, right? He can handle one little girl.

Only there is no girl. There never was. When Jimmy takes that holiday, everyone thinks how good it will do for him to take a break from things that remind him of Lucy. No one realizes that the Daily Globe has hired a new receptionist...

Jimmy's father hated when his son put on Mommy's make-up. It was one of the few things that made him get the belt.

So - why exactly is Lucy Lane mad at him in that last panel? What did he do wrong now?
Also, who the hell would want to eat in a prison-themed restaurant? Restaurants are supposed to make you relax so you can enjoy your food - how can anyone relax when they're in a jail cell, even a fake one?
(Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm supposed to talk about Jimmy crossdressing. Well, everyone's doing that, so what's the point? Vive la difference!)

Boy, THERE'S a sticky situation. Even if he told the truth, it wouldn't help, because she A: probably wouldn't believe him, and B: would get even more upset if she did.
Poor Jimmy. Of course, one could argue that he deserved it, given that this whole thing started with him gettin' his manly on over their respective differences in salaries (a flight attendant makes more than a reporter? Do tell!), but still, he really does have precious few romantic victories worth being referred to as such.
