Ditko's Halloween Bash!
Ditko

To celebrate Halloween this year, I've posted a bunch of my favorite Steve Ditko horror comics covers, all from his Charlton days. I never seem to remember that Ditko's birthday is a couple of days after Halloween (On Nov. 2nd, he turns 82).Well, I remembered this time, and although there isn't a terribly strong connection between both of these themes, it's more reason to post some Ditko. Additionally, one of his classic collaborations with Archie Goodwin, "Room With a View", is also included here. Just follow the cut for horror covers and comics at their finest.

The Punisher and the Social Worker
Greetings True Believers! Well, I'm still trying to get a Punisher Week started, come on people! Show Frank some love!

In keeping with the theme of the week, I'm going scans of Frank interacting with a liberal social worker named Jen. It's from the story arc, "Hidden" in the trade paperback, "Full Auto"

There is some interesting interaction between Frank and a normal person in the Marvel MU.

Jen is helping the homeless when she and a friend go underground to investigate some rumors. A certain vigilante is also in the tunnels that day.....

Solomon Grundy...(old school)
Halloween week.

This story isn't about Halloween, but it's one of the spooky stories I read when I was little.I have always felt the SG as a goul worked better than how he is done today. I scanned it out of Wanted #34,but I believe it originally cam from All American comics #61.

Now that's one heck of a mystery

Cat Allingham and James Doyle, investigators of the afterlife, are back on the (very odd) case.

Punisher: The Cell
The story where I've never been more terrified of Frank Castle, who is at his scariest in this tale.

When Anna Met Kurt
Garth Ennis and I have a love-hate relationship: namely, when market considerations don't compel him to include superheroes in his work, which he further feels compelled to denigrate for black comedy, I frequently love his work. As an historian, his war comics are particularly enjoyable. Most recently, he did a series of Battlefields minis for Dynamite (three three-issue stories), which sold quite well - now a new run of Battlefields minis has been announced, two of which will be sequels to two of the previous minis (the third original one doesn't leave much ground for a sequel). Should be good.

So in honour of this news, here's seven pages from Battlefields: Night Witches #3, one of the stories getting a follow-up.

In which a good deed is its own reward. )

There's a few gory panels here, but pretty mild be Ennis standards.

I expect a LOT of icons are possible from this post...
I love sketchcards, and I've posted a few in the past, and the new Rittenhouse Spider-Man Archives series is ripe pickings.

These were posted by the original artists here and here and here, so I think it's fair game to post them here

Lots of cuteness, and a little pathos too )

Jack Kirby's favorite sci-fi flick?
This first page is from THE FANTASTIC FOUR# 7, October 1962, the second from JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY# 101, February 1964. Let's see... the elements include a flying saucer from outer space landing, a strange occupant emerging, TWO giant robots appearing and one of them slowly opening its glowing eyes to shoot a disintegrative beam. Holy smoke. Did Jack Kirby really like THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL or what? (I didn't excavate another book, but in the first issue of THE X-MEN in 1963, Cyclops first displays his power by slowly raising his visor to reveal two glowing spots which suddenly shoot out an overwhelming force. I've always figured much of the inspiration for Cyclops came from Gort.

__

And if this has brought back memories of the movie with Klaatu and Gort, here are some thoughts on THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL.

Nightcrawler & Anjulie.
Because there's just not enough Nightcrawler around lately, I hereby post two pages from Excalibur #16, where Kurt has landed on an alien world and kind-of-inadvertently ended up saving a princess. She goes on to express her gratitude.
