John Waters is a Batman villain now.

That's the cover for Batman & Robin #6 featuring the debut of a new Gotham crime lord named the Flamingo.

In what way?

I'm just curious as to how you mean that, really. Story? Use of character?

And I don't think you're the only one. The stuff pre-Batman and Robin had about as many people shrieking about it as it did praising it.

I didn't mind his Batman as part of the Justice League, but in the long run there does seem to be a tone problem for me.

Of Grant Morrison writing Batman.

You're not. Trust me, you're really, really not. I've liked some of his other stuff, but his Batman makes me want to cry. (As does his Jason. And his Luthor. And his Lois. And his Wonder Woman. And... I'm going to stop now.)

As iffy as I've found some elements of Morrison's run, I do like that he's actually trying to contribute some new stuff to the DCU, rather than just recycling elements of old stories and doing his little pick and mix with continuity.

So new villains are always good. And especially ones that are fairly distinct visually from the old crowd.

I expect a number of people to be distinctly pleased at how his tyre's parked on Damien, however.

Nope, I'm digging what Morrison's doing with the title--he kind-of blends the two stories we expect from Batman, a crime tale and a superhero tale, into one freaky blend.

If anything, I think the cover shows that Quitely wasn't the right person for this arc. Don't get me wrong, I loved Quitely's work last arc and I would give my left nut to be able to draw half as good as him, but this Flamingo doesn't feel half as freak-job terrifying as Tan drew him at the end of last issue.

Oh, come on! Don't tell me a Pink Flamingos/Batman movie wouldn't eighteen shades of awesome! Batman in a death match with the Pink Flamingo, played by Waters (or maybe Steve Buscemi?), and "the Filthiest People Alive", Cotton, Crackers, Eggman, Miss Edie, and Divine, as Harley Quinn to Flamingo's Joker!

I'd buy THAT for 11 dollars!

Or have people forgotten THAT John Waters? Sad...

I like that you have to have a lot of creativity to be a Batman villain.

Though didn't this guy have an even sillier name before he was the Flamingo? He seems to try a bit too hard.

The Flamingo was, weirdly enough, the arch-villain (and Joker stand-in) of the Batman homage "Knight Watchman" done by Big Bang Comics (published by Image).

I don't expect Morrison to know this, but I find it an amusing coincidence.

I tend to like Grant Morrison's work. Course, that's probably becuase I tend to enjoy far out, trippy story lines in general...I may not always agree with some of his plot elements (Magneto going nuts or Jason being a one dimensional villain) but I generally enjoy his work.

I like Quitely's art as well. It's an acquired taste, sure enough, but I find it quirky and endearing.

Hmmm...I also like Damian a lot. I tend to have a soft spot for troubled youth I suppose. I can't really blame the kid for being the brat that he is *right now* (blah blah grew up with assassins blah blah) What I'm hoping is that Morrison will eventually soften the character and have him eventually become more willing to at least consider the rest of the Batfamily's point of view. He at least appears to be capable of doing just that, since he's already promised not to kill criminals and seemed genuinely shocked when Azrael didn't seem that motivated to save the kids in that 7 deadly sins storyline in the Annual...

Of course, I had the same high hopes for Jason and I have a bad feeling what will end up happening is that the writers will adopt the same attitude for Damien as many writers seem to have for Jason, namely to present him as this single minded crazy person instead of showing any "grey" area.

I might actually be interested, if the other cover for #6 didn't portray what appears to be Jason torturing Dick to death with a crowbar.

Call me when the boys finally remember that they are brothers.
