'Tec 858, what's Renee up to?

The Question back-up went to 10 pages this month! That means I can post more!

We last saw Renee running from some dudes at Chandless' place. The dudes never stood any chance at catching her, and they feel bad. Surely, it must be a problem on their end.

Renee peels out on a motorcycle!

Checking the manifest she swiped last month, Renee rides out to Long Beach to intercept a boat called the Indigo Star. Before hopping aboard though, she checks in with Tot.

Now who is she having him call? Keep reading.

Yeah, it's the right boat.

She makes her way inside while Tot pumps info in her ear.

Too bad wireless signals get trouble from metal walls.

But look what our hero finds in the hold!

Louisa' the one in the back, right along Renee's eyeline in the middle of the page.
Renee gets jumped by the captain, who tells her she's not very smart for coming alone. Lucky they made that call, huh?

You're never alone when the FBI's got your back.

Hector Soliz arrives (did the FBI call him, or Renee?)

makes you kind of wonder what Renee's explanation to the FBI for hanging around was, unless she's finally got a real PI's license (do those take beyond state-lines?)

Either way, case closed.

Next month, Huntress makes the scene! Still no clue whether she'll be wearing a better costume, though. Cully's pleading the fifth and Rucka's not easy to get a hold of. Looking forward to it either way!

Too bad the site leads to an "under construction" message.

I don't even get that...but it's nice to finally have a legible URL for it, at least.

Next to last scan: WTF is with Louisa's expression? She looks like she's not very happy to see the guy.

Girl's been through a lot, she's on the verge of breaking down, clearly.
(had to cut the first panel of tearful reunions, but i cut what i had to so i could leave those last four in)

I haven't been that interested in the backup, and I'm really hoping there's a lot more to it then what's here. I mean, it seems so bland then what I've come to expect from Rucka riting Renee, you know?

I've been feeling that about both halves, honestly. The Kate stuff's just moving too slow (and the art doesn't do much for me the way it seems to for the rest of the world, so that's not redeeming), though it seems like it'll read well in trade. The Renee stuff I'm less confident about even collected - maybe I'm still just hung up on "Montoya shouldn't be a cape," but it just seems so... I don't know, generic, I guess. I can't think of a single thing about this first arc that requires Montoya to be Montoya, it really seems like "good guy investigation story #601, serial numbers pre-filed for your convenience."

Well, a lot of first arcs that don't deal with the origin can be like that, I guess. If this were a regular book instead of a back-up, it woud've been done in two issues with pages to spare, maybe something to ground the characters a little more. This one did burn a lot of page-time on action (which is funny, 'cos i usually end up cutting those kind of scenes when I share a comic).

It isn't exactly personal, sure, but the only thing Renee's been connected to since she has become a cape is the Dark Faith, and with Kate still dealing with them, that might risk reader fatigue (or even further reader fatigue in some cases). This arc seems to me like it's kind of moving Renee back to her investigatory roots, only on a broader scale. Whether that actually takes, we'll have to stay tuned to see.

It's pretty good for action, and alright as a detective story, but I really would prefer it as a full-length story. It would give it a better chance at being good Renee.

All in all, though, I've been kind of more excited by it then the main feature (though this month's really had me!)

Still really, really liking this. And even though I find the 8-10 page stories too short for my liking, I have to say that The Question (or perhaps more accurately, Rucka) seems to manage it quite well.

OK, the stenciled graffiti calling card is cool. If Vic ever comes back, he should keep that.

I am very excited for Huntress to show up. And I am happy this first arc is over. While I am glad to have Renee in an ongoing this arc was sloooooow. I think Rucka needs to have more of Renee's inner dialogue for this to work.

The funny thing about that is, for all the stories he's written with her, only Two Down and 52 had any kind of internal monologue.

I have to admit Renee is growing on me. Especially since I saw the cover for the Jan. one-shot return of the old Question book. Danny is using the Mullet-Ninja version (eck...)

The covers included for the solicits of the resurrected one-shots are just the inversed-black-and-white covers of the last issue of the series when it ended. The real covers should show up sometime before January rolls around.
So no, that's jut the cover to Question #36, Cully's cover to #37'll be revealed later.

(who's Danny? is it Didio?)

Oh, thanks for the heads up. There is hope. Danny O'Neil, a writer I usually like but whom I blame for ruining The Question.

Hah! The graffiti calling card is awesome!

I must admit, I was on the "Vic is the only Question" boat for a while, but Renee has totally grown on me. I blame Greg Rucka and his genius.

It works on two levels, since it not just marks that she broke the case, it's how she get her cases to begin with. Also mirrors the first page of the story, where Hector caught sight of one after Vargas and his men beat him.

I guess I was on the Renee train pretty early, since it was Rucka who made me a Vic fan to begin with.

Thanks for reminding me how deluded I was!

I don;t have a complaint about her costume, but by the way at least one artist is interpreting the Question's featureless face. The pseudoderm mask isn't supposed to be form-fitting enough to cast shadows on the wearer's face. The Question's supposed to NOT HAVE A FACE.

The only thing is, that shading's been there in some form since Ditko. It's not like it's ever consistently been featureless.
