"Da!" As usual, Neville could hear Jinx's heavy footsteps before he saw the child. She thundered through the maze of boxes, blithely ignoring the lamp that came crashing down behind her and the shaking of the portrait against the wall. He considered that it was likely a good thing that his grandmother had fled to her room early, pleading nerves. "There's some strange woman outside. She's got a kid." Her hand flew to her hip as she looked down her nose and said, just as Augusta Longbottom would have, "I'm sure they're looking for a handout."

"Jinx," was all he said and she sighed.

Glancing down, she tugged at a red braid, then added, "Okay, so they don't look homeless." He touched her elbow, then stood, clambering over the boxes slowly as he went to the door. There were times, rare times but they still existed, when Neville occasionally felt a twinge of wanting an elf. Generally, however, those times were reserved for the kitchen. He opened the door, then saw the figures standing there and a smile slowly began to flower on his face.

"Dora," and with a grin, he leaned down. "You must be Lila." He held his hand out seriously to the small girl as if she was an adult he was meeting and not a child. He remembered that Jinx had always liked that.
