It was an old building, so the corridors weren't large. Normally he didn't notice it but the further up in the building you went the more obvious it became. Ben wasn't sure if he was always struck by this thought; to be quite honest he couldn't really remember. It wasn't often he'd visited the boss' office. He wasn't entirely sure how many times he'd visited it when Trimble had been the head of Regulation but he could probably have counted the number of times on one hand.
Nodding in greeting at a few people he walked passed, stopping to exchange what he supposed would be considered pleasantries, though there wasn't really anything pleasant about the conversation, with a few others, Ben arrived at Charlie's office shortly after two o'clock, rapping on the door loudly. It still felt fairly odd, he thought, to consider Charlie his boss. The other man was quite a few years older than he was and he'd always viewed him as extremely good at his job. He hadn't doubted that Charlie would get far in the department, not really, but there was something that threw him slightly about thinking of someone he'd fought beside years ago as the guy who basically decided whether he got to keep his job or not.
He was also likely to know a lot more about Fred's current situation than he was. Or at least that was what Ben hoped.
