Bill opened his eyes to silence and a dull fire in his limbs, a sensation he recognized as a blessed ebb between the waves that brought him under. He flexed his fingers until they could feel the pillow shoved against the wall beside him, then he rolled over and fumbled for the light on the bedside table. When he turned it on, he shut his eyes and opened them slowly to allow his eyes to adjust gradually. It made him slightly nauseous, hungover from the potion. The glass of water remained on the bedside table, but it was cool to the touch. There had been ice in it; either Charlie or their mother had left it while he was sleeping.

Monday morning, Charlie had gotten an owl from Oliver suggesting he come by that evening. Generally these things led to some discussion about whatever bizarre creature-related case Oliver had found himself embroiled in, with Charlie trying to mediate whatever was going on between Barrington Investigations and Regulation more or less successfully. It was one more way becoming the boss had both simplified and complicated Charlie's life: he could now solve all those problems with the stroke of a quill, but now he was going to have to make all the decisions when one of his old friends butted heads with his Regulators.

So it was with something like a sense of dread that Charlie knocked on the door of Barrington Investigations. Mircea was at his heels, and this time Charlie had made sure the dog had had plenty of walk time before the drinking started. For all that Mircea's needs had been conveniently timed, he didn't want every uncomfortable conversation interrupted by canine emergencies.
