[No barriers. He can manage that. He finds a sheet to wrap himself in, something to put a layer between his bare skin and Spike's touch just in case. Once it's in place he sinks down next to him, curling up in the pile of pillows and blankets he's made.] I know how to do it. Or I always felt like I could before. All the terrible things that have happened to me at home, I felt like I could just deal with them. Have them just be there, be painful, but keep going. Maybe this was just the last straw.

Everyone at Torchwood dies young. [Not fatalistic or dramatic or anything, just so matter of fact. He's watched it. Tosh and Owen and Suzie, not to mention the hundreds of people at Torchwood London.] It's easier sometimes just to keep your head down and keep going. It's not like any of us have much time to learn to live with it.

[Its why he doesn't want to leave this place. Because it's a way out, a second chance that he knows he doesn't get at home. Here he can have friends and go out and do things besides worry if today's the day is damn job gets him killed.] I guess now that I don't have that to fall back on I don't really know how to live with things like this. Before I just always accepted that they'd be over soon enough.

[ Such a damn waste is the only thing he can think about this, thoughts similar to what he's been thinking about the whole Slayer system lately. People dying young for no goddamn good reason other than to protect others without getting anything out of it for themselves. His deal is infinitely better in comparison. Who needs a soul if you can live forever?

Except, now he has a soul and with that comes a conscience and more thinking than could ever be good for him. It hurts just to hear this and he tightens his hold around Ianto's shoulders. ]

[Talking. It's what he told Jack he got from Spike when he asked what he gave him that Jack couldn't. He hasn't really been able to talk to him at all about what happened with Tyki. Maybe it was knowing that Jack has seen him die twice now, thinking it was perminant both times. Or maybe it's because of that stupid instinct he has to protect Jack because he knows he's the only one in the whole damn world who bothers to try. Whatever the reason, no, he hasn't talked about it. Chuck tried, and Kitty and Reid and Martha but he doesn't open up to people. When something hurts him this bad he always keeps the pain to himself. Another skill Torchwood taught him. He tried a therapist once, before Lisa died but it was a waste of time when he had to just lie about everything anyway. Or maybe it was easier to say that than to admit he doesn't know how to talk to people about things. If there's anyone he can try it with its probably Spike.]

The dying part really didn't bother me. It's what everyone seems to worry about but I've seen it happen to Jack so many times, and I knew it was going to happen to me. It was just everything else before. That's the part I can't get out of my head. [He pauses, swallows hard.]

We found these cannibals, once. Out in this village in the country. People were going missing and we thought it was aliens but it was humans, in the end. They trapped me and Tosh, and they had us in this basement and there was this fridge... [A long pause, because this is one of those bad things he mentioned, an entry on the list of Torchwood shit.] It was full of body parts. They'd butchered them, and it was so neat and organized, all the shelves and all. I keep thinking about that lately. About how I had to watch it happen to me.

Dying is easy.

[ Dying is nothing. Dying is relief from whatever's killing you. He knows that perhaps better than anyone, considering how often he's been on the killing side. Probably something else a therapist can't relate to. ]

And they say demons are bad. [ He mutters under his non-breath. No need for quips right now, or bitter resentment. You can do better, Spikey. ] Even back then, if I'd known what Tyki was up to I would've done something. There's killing people and then there's this. Angelus was big on that whole torture thing but it just... never sat right with me.

People are just as bad as anything else out there. [Dometimes he thinks that's why they get all the shit to begin with. They're not much different than the monsters.

He nods, because he believes that bit. They weren't all that close then but he thinks Spike means it even if he was friends with Tyki.] It was random. I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. No one would have know what he was up to. [He's said it so many times but it's never reassuring.]

[ He fakes a sigh because it's all so goddamn sad and it feels almost like he's too late to do something about it. Tyki isn't here, probably, and that leaves very little room for vengeance. It's hard to make a violent, bloody statement when the person you want to teach a lesson isn't around to learn it. ]

Maybe it was, but that doesn't mean it doesn't mean anything. It's random for him, but it happened to you. [ So, it's okay that it's a big deal. Don't downplay your own mortality like this. ]

Once this is cleared up, I'm going to pull some strings. I think I have an idea for something that could make you feel a lit'le safer.

But it helps, hearing that. He hasn't really just gotten acceptance of it like that from anybody. Jack was so focused on bringing Tyki to justice that it felt like they skipped that step. Then again sometimes he thinks Jack is too used to death anyway. He doesn't remember how it felt to be scared of it.] It happened. It feels like it's been long enough, like I should be over it. Like I shouldn't expect people to still talk about it with me.

[Or maybe that's anther one of the excuses he tells himself to keep people away and not have to worry about opening up. He's got a lot of those.] I feel safe with you here.

I'm not much of a pet person. [Was that a joke? It was close. As close as he's going to get today at any rate. No, he doesn't expect Jack and Spike to always be there. Before the Tyki thing that never really bothered him, he was always reasonably able to take care of himself in most dangerous situations. But here he doesn't have any of the resources of Torchwood, no technology or weapons he can use to keep himself safe. Here there's none of that safety net and he would never have thought about it if he hadn't been tortured and killed.]

What did you have in mind?

[ Good thing Spike is bff's with a tech witch then, isn't it? Maybe they don't have the resources of Torchwood but that's nothing new when it comes to him and if Rebecca is game (he has no reason to think she'd object) maybe they can rig something up, starting with: ]

A panic button. The communicators take too long and even if you'd be able to send a message off, it's too obvious. If it was me, that would just make me want to kill you faster. [ Sorry. ] I was thinking something small... something you can keep in your pocket or on your wrist. Something easy to press without getting noticed.

[He peeks up at Spike through all the blankets, feeling an unexpected wash of relief and affection at the suggestion. It would be easy to feel insulted by the suggestion, like he can't take care of himself but after today, after this conversation it's easier to see it as what it is - Spike trying to protect him because he cares. And he does need it, something to protect him. He feels like what Tyki did changed him, made him more afraid, less confident about his own abilities.]

Thank you. [He moves a bit so he can rest his head on his shoulder.] After today I'm not going to say no to that suggestion. It sounds nice.

[Its not quite a real kiss of course but it still makes him smile. No forcefield either, which is good. Maybe he's famed down enough or whatever controls the bands knows how much he needs that small gesture of affection.]

That's the first time you've kissed me on your own. Without any outside influences, I mean. [No head games, no mistletoe, no booze, nothing. Their first real kiss.]

[It would be easier to say he'd rather it be without all the fear and unhappiness that led up to it, or that he wishes they could do more or make it a proper, real kiss. But thanking that way will just ruin the moment and right now, cuddled up in their pile of blankets and pillows feelings safe and cared about? He could never complain about a that.]

There's some plans percolating about that, involving candles and fresh sheets and maybe even wearing something other than jeans and a tee. Really can't wait to get the bands sorted but for tonight this will do. For tonight, this is perfect. ]
