Day 221 — Morning mingle : Main shelter
[Wake up and smell the lack of coffee. You're on a bunk bed. Maybe you're a top and maybe you're a bottom. There are five other people in your room. Maybe they're friends or enemies or faces you barely recognize if at all. It doesn't matter much. You can leave this room and you don't need to come back to it.

You should get your rations though. You're probably hungry. You're definitely a little sluggish of body. What happened to that bruise you got sparing yesterday? What happened to your newly dyed hair? Mystery, mystery... Move along. Find the public bathrooms and do your business with a hundred of your closest friends.

Find the kiosk and get your rations. Careful not to let anyone steal them. You won't get more until tomorrow and the bots won't care. They aren't here to hold your hand. If you get sick or hurt and they deem it necessary they will take you to the hospital whether you wish it or not. But why dwell on such things? You're here now and you might as well enjoy it. You even get a free day today.]

(OOC: OOC info. This mingle takes place in the Main shelter over the morning hours.

[Okay, that earns a laugh outright.

He might not be wholeheartedly into pursuing her right this minute, but he can appreciate a good excuse to flirt.]
Come, sit. Then I can say I've gotten you in bed.

At least I'm still amusing. Lost love and fish-out-of-literal-water and all.

[And she does concede to go sit with him, because... well, because. She knows what he is, but sometimes it's so hard to remember.] Was it good for you?

[Ah, he loves a woman that's fun.

He shifts over for her to join him, then laughs again.]
I'll never be the same again. You've spoiled me for other women.

I am a rare and talented individual. Sorry for rocking your world so hard, all apologies to your other conquests.

[She really, really wishes he were a better person. He'd make a great drinking buddy.]

Seems like you're in a good mood despite the surroundings.

It helps to have something nice to look at. [He chuckles.]

I am however feeling like shit and in dire need of a cigarette. Which I don't think I'll be getting in the foreseeable future.

Aw. Sorry to hear. I feel the same way about chocolate, that crappy bar they gave us so doesn't count.

What about something to take your mind off it?

What've you got in mind?

[...urk. She didn't realize how that sounded.] Yeah I didn't mean that. Good as we've already decided I am.

I was more asking what you might suggest. Other than a roll in the hay.

[Oh but he laughs, quite genuinely so.]

Normally I'd suggest drinking or a good game of cards but... [There's a lack of either thing laying around.]

How about you tell me a story about yourself? I'll tell you one back in turn.

A story, huh? How shockingly intimate of you. But all right, let it never be said that Penelope Garcia isn't good at filling space with words.

[She thinks for a second and flops back against the bunk, resting on her elbows.]

Right after my parents died, I ended up living in this horrible dank basement apartment. Typical geekery, the troll in her cave. Anyway, my first real hack was this business exec, real high and mighty type, stuffed shirt and all. The kind that just loves bragging to the press and paints a big fat target on his back.

So I'm past all their pitiful firewalls and I'm in the middle of deciding whether to make the guy's phone play boy band music or putting his picture on a few kinky and easily traceable Want ads, when all of a sudden all my alarms go off because the stupidly easy firewalls were totally a decoy. My homemade system wasn't handling it well enough so I hook up an extra drive for added flow. Well, I forgot the fan and next thing I know, the fire alarms and sprinklers are on. But I can't just leave what I'm doing without getting busted, so...

By the time I dragged by drowned-rat self outta there, my makeup was running so bad I looked like Marilyn Mansen put through a car wash. Worst part is, my hair dye was freshly done, and apparently not as permanent as advertised. I totally rocked the skunk look for about five days until I could afford more dye.

-- But I did get the sleazeball in the end! Turned out all I needed to do after beating up the guard dogs was make his not-well-hidden exploits a little less hidden. Bingo-bango.

[Tyki understood about 25% of what she said, getting the gist despite his puzzled 19th century mindset. (And possibly, expression.) Having known Kitty for so long as he did he picked up on a few things about electronics, but microwaves being cool and 'computers can make porn' helped only so much.

But he laughs nonetheless.]

But go on, your turn.

Well, you have to promise not to laugh. [Or refute this if canon proves different later.]

I wasn't always the charming, silver tongued man you currently share a bed with now. Shocking, I know. There was a period of my childhood where I was actually a bit of a brat and hadn't quite had the growth spurt I was in dire need of. I was raised in an orphanage full of similarly bratty boys and we took great joy in beating each other up. That's just what boys do, isn't it?

[He shoots her a glance and a shrug, looking upwards again as he continues.] So when I met a girl for the first time-- met, face to face and requiring conversation... I had no idea what I was doing. She was a baker's daughter, I think. All I really remember is her hair, orangey red and in two long braids. I'd run away for about the fifth time and I ended up standing in front of her on her father's shop's step.

I stared, to start it off. I'd seen girls before, clearly, but never much more than in passing. She of course was a little smoother than I was and a little less fazed, not really enjoying being stared at much. She told me flat out to get lost. Went inside and closed the door on my nose. At that point I was smitten.

[He chuckles.] And I showed it in some rather uncouth ways in the weeks after. Threw a frog in her basket the next time I saw her. Teased her, pulled her hair. Stole bread from her lunch, all kinds of things. She had a temper though, smacked me right across the cheek when I went too far. Turned me down for a kiss.

I think she honestly hated me, wasn't too sad to see me go when I got work at the mines for the first time. No goodbye at all, refused to even see me. I think she was what started me on the chase for hard to get women.

[Garcia is both charmed and oddly sad for him. She lost her parents at eighteen, but she knows what it's like to be an orphan.]

[Impulsively, she leans over and kisses his cheek.]

Maybe, but it still sucks. You know, it seems like a lot of things that build character kinda suck. Very funny, life.

So... forgive me if this is a taboo question, but. You weren't born a Noah?

I could tell you more if you're entirely sure you want to know.

But mind you, knowing that much may not make your friend Reid all that happy. [If you catch his drift, you might not want to bring this up around dinner.

And yeah, makings of a target and knowing too much. But Tyki cares less about that.]

Knowing how it works puts me in more danger of being hurt by you? [That... doesn't really make sense, in her mind.] Maybe I'll regret knowing, but I dunno, I'm trying to figure you out a little. Reid and everyone say you're really dangerous and I should avoid you, but you're always perfectly sweet to me.

So... I'm entirely sure I want to know. Hit me.

[Less in danger by him than any other family member of his that might one day show up. Knowing too much about the Noah was a plain recipe for disaster. He regards her slowly, really wishing he had a cigarette to nurse as he gives a shrug. If you really want to know...]

The Noah is what awakens in a select group of people, chosen ones you could say. Depending who you ask, chosen by God or the Devil himself. There are thirteen of us in my family, and every time one of us dies the Noah's reincarnated in someone else. And so on and so forth. [He gestures with his hand, leaning back on his arms against the bed.]

[Oh Tyki, wouldn't you protect her if that happened?]

Huh. [That's totally not how she had pictured it. It's more like... well, the closest comparison she can draw is being turned into a vampire. You were human, now you're something else.]

What was it like? That awakening thing.

[It opened a whole new world to him, literally. Gave excitement to a mediocre life.]
