WHO: EVERYONE! Seriously, EVERYONE!
WHAT: FAIR PARTY POST
WHEN: Tonight!
WHERE: The Fairgrounds
WARNINGS: Who knows?
STATUS: OPEN/ONGOING

The fair has come to town! To those of you who have attended a rural county fair, this is pretty much your standard fare. To those of you who haven't, there will be rides, food, games where you can win huge stuffed animal prizes, and also...4 H stuff. Like...cow shows and rabbit shows and horses and talent shows and quilt competitions and...really, name it and it's probably there.

Have fun!

"Then we'll hit up some of the wilder rides after we get a good view of the whole place," Veronica said. She wasn't exactly a daredevil, but she had grown up going to the beach and surfing on a pretty regular basis so she didn't mind a little bit of thrill.

She squeezed his hand and smiled. They actually seemed like a normal dating couple right now and it gave Veronica a flicker of hope that this wasn't completely insane to try.

It probably was completely insane to try what they were trying, but Steve was pretty well known for doing things that were completely insane. Like jumping out of planes without a parachute or breaking into super maximum security prisons in the middle of the ocean.

"If you can handle it, sure," Steve teased lightly, guiding her through the crowds to join the line for the ride.

Veronica gave him a fake pout once they were in line. "Hey, now, I'm a lot tougher than I look," she insisted. She wouldn't have made it this long if she wasn't tough after all her near death experiences. Steve wasn't the only one who had a habit of doing things that were completely insane.

"But I also have no doubt you'll protect me if the need arises." She felt safe with Steve and that was actually very important to her given what she'd been through.

The pout was cute. Steve actually really liked the pout, liked her confidence in him, however playful, even more and wound up smiling down at her.

"Of course I will." Even if he wasn't romantically interested in her, he'd look out for her. He was just going to look a little harder than normal. He'd fight as hard as he could. "You going to need protecting from some carnival rides?"

"You never know around here," Veronica said. She knew she was tempting fate to even suggest such a thing, but they really did need to expect anything in Madison Valley. "I mean, the rides might come to life and try to eat us or something."

Maybe if she said something completely outlandish, it would keep it from actually happening.

Sadly, that was one of the more plausible things Steve could imagine happening. He'd fought an army of evil robots. A roller coaster coming to life didn't seem impossible.

He laughed, though, because that was pretty unlikely, and making it into a joke was the only way anyone had to fend of the weirdness of this place. "Okay, well. I give you my word. If anything tries to eat you, I'll clock it one."

Punching solved that kind of problem.

She lifted her free hand to cover her heart and gave him a big smile. "My hero," she faux swooned before laughing. Okay, so maybe Molly was on to something when she said they were gross and decided to go off and find her boyfriend instead of hanging out with them.

When they got loaded onto the ride, Veronica leaned forward to look at the crowds from the little basket. "Seems like nearly everyone in town is here," she remarked.

Molly was probably onto a lot of things when she talked about them. Or just Steve. The kid was probably more observant than he gave her credit for.

"I'm not surprised. Something new. Everyone's going to want to come check it out." Or almost everyone, at least. "I'd put money on a good half of these people having the same idea you did."

Taking a date for a change of pace.

"Well, I'm just glad they didn't all have the same idea to ask you on a date to the fair," Veronica joked. "Because I would have hated having to fight off half the town."

She wasn't sure if they were actually at a point in their dating relationship where jokes like that were okay, but she didn't really care. If Steve couldn't handle her sense of humor, then this wasn't going to end up working out anyway.

Whether or not they were actually at a point where that was okay, Steve did chuckle. He wasn't nearly as humourless as some people painted him to be. Most of those people just didn't understand his own sense of humour.

"Half the town, huh? I think you're overestimating my appeal."

He'd managed to get one date on his own in the last six months. A handful of others had been set up for him.

Veronica was pretty sure that if Steve actually tried, he would have had plenty of dates, but she knew that he hadn't really been interested. Which made her feel kind of special that he was willing to try with her. Of course, she hadn't been interested in dating much either. At least that was something they had in common.

"Okay, we can go with that," she said. After all, why would she encourage him to look at other women?

It was true that he hadn't been interested in anyone else, but it was also true that, a lot of the time, Steve wasn't great at approaching women. It worked better when they came to him or they were friends first. The kind of tentative friendship he'd had with Veronica before everything was the only thing that had made him able to successfully ask her out.

"Oh, thank you." He knew that she wasn't buying it, but she was letting him have the win. "Very nice of you."

"I am a very nice person," Veronica said. At least most of the time. And she had no reason to be anything other than nice when it came to Steve.

Their ride was almost over and she gave him a smile. "See anything down there that caught your fancy?" She was hoping that he was interested in playing games at some point because she secretly wanted him to win her a prize, even though it was super cheesy.

Steve was absolutely interested in winning her a prize of some sort. Cheesy or not, it was the kind of thing men did at these things. And it was a nice gesture, the kind that could do this early on without it being too much too soon.

Steve was always worried about that, getting too invested and scaring her off. But he knew from the start that he wanted this to go long term, and he had a bad habit of looking all the way down the road, planning six steps ahead.

"What do you say we go down, grab a bite and play some ring toss?" Steve was great at ring toss. Maybe they could top off the evening with a spin on the ferris wheel or something. "Unless you're dying to try out a few other rides first?"

She wouldn't mind trying some of the other rides, but she was also content to eat something and play some games instead. This was a casual sort of date and there was no need for them to try doing everything.

"Sure, that sounds like a great plan," Veronica said. "I love food that comes on sticks."

He paused when they got off the ride, giving her a helping hand down to solid ground again.

"Is that so?"

That was exactly the kind of thing Steve wanted to know about her. That was the whole point of them spending time together. Ridiculous stuff like liking food on sticks and having thrown up at Coney Island.

The fact that he gave her a hand getting off the ride was one of those old fashioned things that Veronica found utterly charming. She was surprised by his question though. She'd mostly been joking when she said that she loved food on sticks, but thinking about it, she realized that she did enjoy them largely because they tended to be connected to fun things in her memory.

"Yeah, it is," she said. "Because they're the kind of thing you get at fairs and other special events. They're not really every day food, you know?"

"Come to think of it, yeah. I know what you mean." There were a few things that Steve always associated with good times too. A lot of what had been special once was just kind of every day now, though.

"Something I don't know, though, is what else you like." The chance to actually talk was why fair rides were being passed over, after all.

It shouldn't be hard to tell someone what you liked, but Veronica had to stop and think for a moment about what she should share. "Well, I like the beach. I grew up near the Pacific Ocean. And I like Broadway. When I went to law school in New York, I went to shows as often as I could."

Which wasn't as often as she would have liked thanks to her limited budget, but she did what she could.

"How about you? What do you like?"

It shouldn't be. But it was a lot harder than just picking something when it was saying it to someone you were trying to impress.

"I think I'm still figuring that out," he admitted after a moment's thought. "I've always had a soft spot for paintings." His appreciation had been why he'd started to draw in the first place, but that was a talent he still kept fairly well hidden.

"Something I did like that doesn't exist anymore, though. Bananas."

Which would seem like he was making things up. But it was true.

Veronica could talk about paintings after living in New York for several years and visiting all the museums in the city, but she was immediately distracted when Steve said that bananas didn't exist anymore and she tilted her head in confusion.

"Bananas don't exist in your world?" she asked, not quite understanding what he was saying. "We have them here."

"No," Steve laughed. "No, here's the thing." He'd learned about it pretty quickly after the first banana he'd eaten after coming out of the ice. And Steve absolutely had opinions about bananas.

"The kind we used to eat was apparently all but wiped out by some disease less than a decade after the war. What everyone knows now is completely different from what we grew up with."

"Wow, that's... fascinating," Veronica said, her tone completely sincere. It was an interesting bit of trivia and she guessed that there were probably very few people who could actually speak to the difference in the bananas of the past and what existed today. "Do they taste a lot different?"

She wasn't normally the scientific type, but she was also curious about how they recreated bananas if they virtually went extinct.

Steve didn't really have the answers to the science questions. All he knew was that it was one of the few things that was so completely unrecognizable in the future he'd woken up in.

"They're like eating paper now. Completely wrong." And now one of Steve's very few likes and dislikes when it came to food.

It made her intensely curious about what bananas used to taste like, but she supposed she would never know. "So no banana pancakes for you then?" she asked. As soon as the words were out, her cheeks flushed as she realized the implications of what she said and hoped Steve wouldn't take it the wrong way.
