WHO: EVERYONE! Seriously, EVERYONE!
WHAT: FAIR PARTY POST
WHEN: Tonight!
WHERE: The Fairgrounds
WARNINGS: Who knows?
STATUS: OPEN/ONGOING

The fair has come to town! To those of you who have attended a rural county fair, this is pretty much your standard fare. To those of you who haven't, there will be rides, food, games where you can win huge stuffed animal prizes, and also...4 H stuff. Like...cow shows and rabbit shows and horses and talent shows and quilt competitions and...really, name it and it's probably there.

Have fun!

That was also good to know. "What else do you miss about the forties?" Veronica asked. She hoped that wasn't too personal or something that was difficult for him to talk about.

Steve was full of information like that. It was just that no one ever really bothered to ask him. Just like no one ever really thought to ask what he missed, rather than just assuming he missed it all.

Because the truth was, there was a lot that had gotten better in the world while he hadn't been living in it. Not everything, but a lot.

"You know, not much. Things are pretty good these days. I miss the little things sometimes, getting a letter instead of a text, that kind of thing. The idea of something like just going for a drive." Steve had never had enough money to drive before the war. "But now's got a lot going for it."

Veronica made a mental note that he wasn't a fan of texts. She personally loved them, but if he didn't, she was willing to reach out to him using other methods. "I miss driving," she said. "I mean, I do occasionally here, but it's not the same as driving down the Pacific Coast Highway. Especially not on the back of a motorcycle."

It might surprise Steve to know that Veronica used to hang out with the leader of a biker gang. That was a long time ago and Weevil was all grown up and respectable now with a wife and daughter, but they had some fun together back in the day.

It wasn't so much that Steve disliked texts. He just preferred actually talking to people. Face to face was the way to go with him, but even a phone call was pretty good some days. Texting felt impersonal.

"You've been on the back of a lot of motorcycles?"

That was interesting. A bike was Steve's preferred method of travel back home; he used the truck here because it was more convenient with Molly.

"It's been a while," Veronica said. "But, yeah, I used to ride with a friend of mine a lot." A friend who was less than reputable at the time, but she didn't need to share that. She already told Steve a lot about her past and how she didn't exactly make the best decisions all of the time.

Steve probably wouldn't actually care much. A friend was a friend, and, well, Bucky was less than reputable back home.

"I never would have guessed. You don't seem like a motorcycles kind of gal."

Veronica knew that she gave off more cheerleader vibes than biker babe vibes so she wasn't surprised by his response. "Oh yeah? What kind of gal do I seem like?" she asked, curious to hear what he thought.

Humming thoughtfully, Steve looked her over. Cheerleaders hadn't really been a part of his life, and it wasn't until the war that women had really been much of a part of it anyway.

"The kind who'd drive a sensible, fuel-efficient car." One of those hybrid things, probably.

"I actually used to drive an SUV," Veronica said. Apparently her transportation choices were going to continue to surprise him. "I do think those Smart Cars are really cute though."

Everything about Veronica continued to surprise him.

"Cute. Yeah, that's important."

He couldn't even honestly say that liking how something looked wasn't. Motorcycles weren't really practical, for anyone.

Veronica laughed. "Hey, being cute has gotten me this far. I'm not going to knock it." But Smart Cars were entirely unpractical for the California freeways. Maybe if she stayed in New York where the roads were congested and parking was at a premium.

Steve would say any kind of driving was impractical in New York. Even back when he'd lived there.

"No, hey, you've definitely got that going for you. I can't argue with that."

She should probably expect that he'd agree she was cute, though. Of course he'd think that.

It wasn't a surprise that he thought she was cute, but hearing him say it made Veronica blush like a teenager instead of a woman in her 30s. "Well at least we have that in common," she said, because obviously she thought he was cute too.

Cute wasn't something Steve was normally called. These days it was handsome, or words like built like he didn't completely understand how they'd come to be compliments but accepted they were. Before, he hadn't gotten anything.

"Oh, I don't know if I'd say that." Steve was terrible at accepting compliments. He very quickly moved on, and led her toward the first bit of food he spotted. "Anyway. Food on sticks, right?"

"Yes, food on sticks," Veronica said, happy to leave the compliments behind and focus on something else.
