WHO: EVERYONE! Seriously, EVERYONE!
WHAT: FAIR PARTY POST
WHEN: Tonight!
WHERE: The Fairgrounds
WARNINGS: Who knows?
STATUS: OPEN/ONGOING

The fair has come to town! To those of you who have attended a rural county fair, this is pretty much your standard fare. To those of you who haven't, there will be rides, food, games where you can win huge stuffed animal prizes, and also...4 H stuff. Like...cow shows and rabbit shows and horses and talent shows and quilt competitions and...really, name it and it's probably there.

Have fun!

Veronica was pretty sure that if Steve actually tried, he would have had plenty of dates, but she knew that he hadn't really been interested. Which made her feel kind of special that he was willing to try with her. Of course, she hadn't been interested in dating much either. At least that was something they had in common.

"Okay, we can go with that," she said. After all, why would she encourage him to look at other women?

It was true that he hadn't been interested in anyone else, but it was also true that, a lot of the time, Steve wasn't great at approaching women. It worked better when they came to him or they were friends first. The kind of tentative friendship he'd had with Veronica before everything was the only thing that had made him able to successfully ask her out.

"Oh, thank you." He knew that she wasn't buying it, but she was letting him have the win. "Very nice of you."

"I am a very nice person," Veronica said. At least most of the time. And she had no reason to be anything other than nice when it came to Steve.

Their ride was almost over and she gave him a smile. "See anything down there that caught your fancy?" She was hoping that he was interested in playing games at some point because she secretly wanted him to win her a prize, even though it was super cheesy.

Steve was absolutely interested in winning her a prize of some sort. Cheesy or not, it was the kind of thing men did at these things. And it was a nice gesture, the kind that could do this early on without it being too much too soon.

Steve was always worried about that, getting too invested and scaring her off. But he knew from the start that he wanted this to go long term, and he had a bad habit of looking all the way down the road, planning six steps ahead.

"What do you say we go down, grab a bite and play some ring toss?" Steve was great at ring toss. Maybe they could top off the evening with a spin on the ferris wheel or something. "Unless you're dying to try out a few other rides first?"

She wouldn't mind trying some of the other rides, but she was also content to eat something and play some games instead. This was a casual sort of date and there was no need for them to try doing everything.

"Sure, that sounds like a great plan," Veronica said. "I love food that comes on sticks."

He paused when they got off the ride, giving her a helping hand down to solid ground again.

"Is that so?"

That was exactly the kind of thing Steve wanted to know about her. That was the whole point of them spending time together. Ridiculous stuff like liking food on sticks and having thrown up at Coney Island.

The fact that he gave her a hand getting off the ride was one of those old fashioned things that Veronica found utterly charming. She was surprised by his question though. She'd mostly been joking when she said that she loved food on sticks, but thinking about it, she realized that she did enjoy them largely because they tended to be connected to fun things in her memory.

"Yeah, it is," she said. "Because they're the kind of thing you get at fairs and other special events. They're not really every day food, you know?"

"Come to think of it, yeah. I know what you mean." There were a few things that Steve always associated with good times too. A lot of what had been special once was just kind of every day now, though.

"Something I don't know, though, is what else you like." The chance to actually talk was why fair rides were being passed over, after all.

It shouldn't be hard to tell someone what you liked, but Veronica had to stop and think for a moment about what she should share. "Well, I like the beach. I grew up near the Pacific Ocean. And I like Broadway. When I went to law school in New York, I went to shows as often as I could."

Which wasn't as often as she would have liked thanks to her limited budget, but she did what she could.

"How about you? What do you like?"

It shouldn't be. But it was a lot harder than just picking something when it was saying it to someone you were trying to impress.

"I think I'm still figuring that out," he admitted after a moment's thought. "I've always had a soft spot for paintings." His appreciation had been why he'd started to draw in the first place, but that was a talent he still kept fairly well hidden.

"Something I did like that doesn't exist anymore, though. Bananas."

Which would seem like he was making things up. But it was true.

Veronica could talk about paintings after living in New York for several years and visiting all the museums in the city, but she was immediately distracted when Steve said that bananas didn't exist anymore and she tilted her head in confusion.

"Bananas don't exist in your world?" she asked, not quite understanding what he was saying. "We have them here."

"No," Steve laughed. "No, here's the thing." He'd learned about it pretty quickly after the first banana he'd eaten after coming out of the ice. And Steve absolutely had opinions about bananas.

"The kind we used to eat was apparently all but wiped out by some disease less than a decade after the war. What everyone knows now is completely different from what we grew up with."

"Wow, that's... fascinating," Veronica said, her tone completely sincere. It was an interesting bit of trivia and she guessed that there were probably very few people who could actually speak to the difference in the bananas of the past and what existed today. "Do they taste a lot different?"

She wasn't normally the scientific type, but she was also curious about how they recreated bananas if they virtually went extinct.

Steve didn't really have the answers to the science questions. All he knew was that it was one of the few things that was so completely unrecognizable in the future he'd woken up in.

"They're like eating paper now. Completely wrong." And now one of Steve's very few likes and dislikes when it came to food.

It made her intensely curious about what bananas used to taste like, but she supposed she would never know. "So no banana pancakes for you then?" she asked. As soon as the words were out, her cheeks flushed as she realized the implications of what she said and hoped Steve wouldn't take it the wrong way.

She was in luck. That wasn't where Steve's mind went. Almost ever, really, but definitely not this soon.

He just chuckled. "They're almost okay cooked, but no. I think we should say those get a pass."

Because they were only almost okay. Still nothing like what he'd grown up on.

Veronica was very glad that he didn't seem to take it the wrong way and she smiled. "I'll keep that in mind if I ever cook for you," she said. "What about banana bread?"

"Probably okay actually. I don't remember ever having it with the old bananas. It's one of those things that was more popular after the war."

The time that Steve hadn't seen. It had only started coming out in cookbooks when he'd been a teenager.

That was also good to know. "What else do you miss about the forties?" Veronica asked. She hoped that wasn't too personal or something that was difficult for him to talk about.

Steve was full of information like that. It was just that no one ever really bothered to ask him. Just like no one ever really thought to ask what he missed, rather than just assuming he missed it all.

Because the truth was, there was a lot that had gotten better in the world while he hadn't been living in it. Not everything, but a lot.

"You know, not much. Things are pretty good these days. I miss the little things sometimes, getting a letter instead of a text, that kind of thing. The idea of something like just going for a drive." Steve had never had enough money to drive before the war. "But now's got a lot going for it."

Veronica made a mental note that he wasn't a fan of texts. She personally loved them, but if he didn't, she was willing to reach out to him using other methods. "I miss driving," she said. "I mean, I do occasionally here, but it's not the same as driving down the Pacific Coast Highway. Especially not on the back of a motorcycle."

It might surprise Steve to know that Veronica used to hang out with the leader of a biker gang. That was a long time ago and Weevil was all grown up and respectable now with a wife and daughter, but they had some fun together back in the day.

It wasn't so much that Steve disliked texts. He just preferred actually talking to people. Face to face was the way to go with him, but even a phone call was pretty good some days. Texting felt impersonal.

"You've been on the back of a lot of motorcycles?"

That was interesting. A bike was Steve's preferred method of travel back home; he used the truck here because it was more convenient with Molly.

"It's been a while," Veronica said. "But, yeah, I used to ride with a friend of mine a lot." A friend who was less than reputable at the time, but she didn't need to share that. She already told Steve a lot about her past and how she didn't exactly make the best decisions all of the time.

Steve probably wouldn't actually care much. A friend was a friend, and, well, Bucky was less than reputable back home.

"I never would have guessed. You don't seem like a motorcycles kind of gal."

Veronica knew that she gave off more cheerleader vibes than biker babe vibes so she wasn't surprised by his response. "Oh yeah? What kind of gal do I seem like?" she asked, curious to hear what he thought.
