The fair has come to town! To those of you who have attended a rural county fair, this is pretty much your standard fare. To those of you who haven't, there will be rides, food, games where you can win huge stuffed animal prizes, and also...4 H stuff. Like...cow shows and rabbit shows and horses and talent shows and quilt competitions and...really, name it and it's probably there.

She didn't seem street to him, and Briar liked to think he recognized a kid like himself when he saw one. He'd been ganged up, an orphan and a thief, and he'd been turned almost respectable. Warning her off being robbed just seemed like the right thing to do, and maybe some god would smile on him for the gesture.

"That right?" He smirked right back, a wicked glint in his eyes. "You don't look like no pickpocket I ever saw."

Well she wasn't wrong. Tidied up and well fed definitely didn't look like he was trying anything. He hadn't had that luxury back in his gang days, though.

"I don't do that no more." Unless he needed to. And he mostly didn't need to. He had a pair of magic wielders who kept him washed, fed, and clothed. They made him go to school, which he didn't like, didn't learn a single useful thing by doing it, but that and household chores, tending the garden mostly, was what he could do to repay them.

He didn't want charity. He'd earn his keep.

	She'd question that, but there was something definitive in his tone of voice Molly believed him. She smiled as she gave him a single nod. "Me neither." Then she tilted her head. For the last couple of years Briar had put up with a lot of people making assumptions about him and what he did. Kids who looked like him didn't go to the kinds of places he went if they weren't looking to cause trouble. Except that he wasn't. He was working. He was a certified mage, one of the youngest ever. He had good reason to be a lot of places kids usually weren't.

He glanced at her hand, appreciated the gesture of showing her palm, and with a quick flick of his wrist did the same as he extended his own to her. Both his hands were covered in brightly covered tattoos, another reason he was usually distrusted. No one had tattoos like that where he was from.

"Briar."

	As soon as their hands clasped Molly picked up on the tickle to her senses that told her Briar had magic. She blinked a little in surprise but covered it with a smile. She didn't shake his hand for long, however. "Nice ink," she said. Molly had more than a few tats herself. Mostly rebellious tribal stuff. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

He didn't miss the flicker of something about her, but had no idea what it was, didn't count it as something he needed to worry about, and decided to just ignore it, instead casting a glance at his own hand, and for a change, not immediately jamming both into his pockets.

"Did it myself." A fellow thief wouldn't be shocked by the story behind them. "It started out as trying to cover the prison Xs." He tapped a finger to the webbing between thumb and finger on each hand, the faded marks there almost impossible to see beneath the newer ink.

	Briar just shrugged. It didn't seem like anything strange to him. As far as he knew, everywhere tattooed its criminals. "How else're they gonna know how many times they've caught you?" One X on each hand and he could still walk free. Caught a third time and it was hard labour on the docks until he died. Briar had been headed to that once. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Databases were something that Briar didn't even fully understand what they were. One of his guardians was good with the computer things, but they were foreign and strange to him, and he'd made a concession to carry his phone around, usually tucked into a boot, but that was about it.

"That's just how things are done in Hajra." That's how they were done everywhere, as far as he knew. But he'd only been a criminal in one place. He didn't do that anymore. Really.

	That was obviously where Briar was from. Molly didn't recognize the name, but she knew people came here from all over. "Where's that?" she asked then jerked her head for him to walk with her. Briar moved just as easily. A lifetime, however short, of living on busy streets had taught him to move through them like no one was there. And that was something he saw as he followed. Maybe she was one of them after all.

"Since the spring." Not all that long, but long enough. "You?"

Not so long that they'd run into each other before, obviously. And Briar liked to think he'd have found everyone he had something actually in common with.

The second he realized where they were standing, Briar patted his pocket, a subtle gesture, just to make sure he had something in there. He wasn't the type to accept any charity.

"Sometimes. The girls and Rosethorn mostly." Places and things, not as much. He'd never really gotten attached to things, hadn't been able to for most of his life. It was only the last few years when he'd had anything to miss in the first place.

"That's gotta be nice. I wish Rosethorn was here." She was as close to a mother as he could remember having. She'd raised him the last couple years, definitely loved him even if she was too prickly to show it most of the time, and she understood.

Better than most anyone else did. She knew how much he'd been educated and what she needed to explain, sometimes a lot, but never treated him like some bleat-brained kid. She treated him like the young mage that he was, because she'd made him that.

"Magic." Briar didn't keep his talents a secret. Green magic wasn't like what most people were used to, wasn't even recognized as magic by all the testers back at home. It didn't work like what people knew and understood and that made Briar, and Rosethorn, and the girls and their teachers too, very special.

"I'm a plant mage." University and temple certified, but he'd stopped tacking that on. No one knew his home and so his credentials meant nothing. The medallion he still wore around his neck, beneath his clothes, spelled so that he would never notice its weight, meant nothing.

It didn't bother Briar any that she didn't know about plants. A lot of people didn't. Almost no one did. That was fine by him, he and Rosethorn could take care of them, as much as two people could.

"A lot of people here do it some way or another. I live with a...sorcerer and a witch." The terms still felt unfamiliar, but that's what they said they were called and he tried to respect that. The witch stuff was kind of what he was used to magic being like anyway.
