WHO: EVERYONE! Seriously, EVERYONE!
WHAT: FAIR PARTY POST
WHEN: Tonight!
WHERE: The Fairgrounds
WARNINGS: Who knows?
STATUS: OPEN/ONGOING

The fair has come to town! To those of you who have attended a rural county fair, this is pretty much your standard fare. To those of you who haven't, there will be rides, food, games where you can win huge stuffed animal prizes, and also...4 H stuff. Like...cow shows and rabbit shows and horses and talent shows and quilt competitions and...really, name it and it's probably there.

Have fun!

Briar moved just as easily. A lifetime, however short, of living on busy streets had taught him to move through them like no one was there. And that was something he saw as he followed. Maybe she was one of them after all.

"Since the spring." Not all that long, but long enough. "You?"

Not so long that they'd run into each other before, obviously. And Briar liked to think he'd have found everyone he had something actually in common with.

"A month?" she answered dubiously. "Maybe two? I'm not too sure. I don't keep track of time very well." Because her mind was fractured thank you very much, and most of her consciousness focused on maintain shields, control and glueing her psyche in place.

She stopped at the line for funnel cake and queued up. "Do you miss your home?"

The second he realized where they were standing, Briar patted his pocket, a subtle gesture, just to make sure he had something in there. He wasn't the type to accept any charity.

"Sometimes. The girls and Rosethorn mostly." Places and things, not as much. He'd never really gotten attached to things, hadn't been able to for most of his life. It was only the last few years when he'd had anything to miss in the first place.

Molly didn't consider it charity. She would consider it a peace offering.

"Who are they?" she asked. "Sisters?" Then she smirked. "A girlfriend?"

"Sisters," Briar insisted, wrinkling his nose. "Sorta. Foster sisters. Except Rosethorn. That's my teacher."

And she'd probably been pretty, once, but she didn't look anything like Maya. That was his girlfriend, and she was here, not there.

Molly smiled as they moved up in line. "Family is family. I have four sisters and two brothers." And Daniel was a pain in her ass. "My teacher is Harry. He's here. Somewhere."

"That's gotta be nice. I wish Rosethorn was here." She was as close to a mother as he could remember having. She'd raised him the last couple years, definitely loved him even if she was too prickly to show it most of the time, and she understood.

Better than most anyone else did. She knew how much he'd been educated and what she needed to explain, sometimes a lot, but never treated him like some bleat-brained kid. She treated him like the young mage that he was, because she'd made him that.

The line moved up again.

"What did she teach?" she asked, but after shaking his hand Molly had a pretty good idea. This was her trying to break the ice, however. Get on the subject.

"Magic." Briar didn't keep his talents a secret. Green magic wasn't like what most people were used to, wasn't even recognized as magic by all the testers back at home. It didn't work like what people knew and understood and that made Briar, and Rosethorn, and the girls and their teachers too, very special.

"I'm a plant mage." University and temple certified, but he'd stopped tacking that on. No one knew his home and so his credentials meant nothing. The medallion he still wore around his neck, beneath his clothes, spelled so that he would never notice its weight, meant nothing.

Molly didn't even bat an eye. Instead she just gave Briar a knowing smile. "I don't know anything about plants, but I do know a thing or two about magic."

It sounded to her as if Briar and the Summer Lady would have gotten along really well.

It didn't bother Briar any that she didn't know about plants. A lot of people didn't. Almost no one did. That was fine by him, he and Rosethorn could take care of them, as much as two people could.

"A lot of people here do it some way or another. I live with a...sorcerer and a witch." The terms still felt unfamiliar, but that's what they said they were called and he tried to respect that. The witch stuff was kind of what he was used to magic being like anyway.

"Back home we call ourselves wizards," Molly said as they reached the front of the line. She paused to order two funnel cakes. One normal and one with cinnamon and powdered sugar, then paid before Briar could try.

"Names are weird, but still powerful."

Briar's eyes narrowed, but he accepted the funnel cake when it was given to him. He couldn't just let that stand. He'd pay her back.

"How do you mean, powerful?"

Words were just words. The only power in them was knowledge, and calling that actual power sounded too much like Tris to be him.

That was how it worked. One day when you're flush you help a fellow streetrat out. The next day they helped you. It was something Molly had learned, but it was also part of her older sister side. She liked to help.

"Names have power," she said. "Know the true name of something and you Know them." The emphasis was obvious. "Put some magic behind it and you can do all kinds of things."

There were nearby tables for people to use but Molly made for a place between stalls. It was more comfortable for being out of the way.

Brair was stubborn about accepting help. She was lucky he wasn't forcing some money into her hand or just slipping it into her pocket with a bit of slight of hand. Something that was a lot harder now that his hands were so brightly decorated.

"Huh." It was interesting, to hear about the way magic worked in other places. "That's not how it works for me." The only things he could do by knowing something was make sure his plants were being properly cared for.

She wouldn't have been surprised if he'd slipped some money into her pockets. Even if she had noticed him doing it she wouldn't have protested.

"I'm finding out that magic is different all over," Molly said before stuffing some funnel cake into her mouth.

"Seems that way, yeah," Briar nodded, settling against the nearest wall with his own. "Sort of interesting."

The way that his magic was interesting to people at home. It was all he'd ever known, and he hadn't even known about it for most of his life because it was so different from what was expected, but he didn't think twice about it now. It was a part of him.

"I'm not the study of magic like my teacher is," Molly said with a shrug of her shoulders. "I barely understand what I do, really. Illusions. Shields. I'm the best they tell me."

She didn't seem overly proud of that, however, and she left off the mental magics since they were forbidden.

"I can't do that. Illusions." Not any more than a trickster on the street could, and that wasn't the same thing at all. He could do shields, though. It was one of the first things he'd had to learn. Meditation shields, to keep the magic from running wild around him. They were almost real, almost physical things.

"It's a nice trick, though."

Molly got a sly smile on her face. "It's damn handy," she said. "Especially when one has to pick a wallet if one wanted to eat."

She whispered a word to draw a veil around herself then disappeared from view. Molly didn't hold it long, just enough to make an impression then dropped it. "Ta da."

Any magic teacher Briar had ever had would scold her for using her magic so frivolously. But that didn't stop him from grinning. It was pretty cool.

"Lakik's teeth, that's useful. I just..." He stretched out a hand over the dirt in front of him, searching with his magic for any bit of life below the surface, pouring himself into it until he coaxed it awake, gave it the strength to grow. Until a few small leaves just poked up through the surface.

It wasn't showy, but it was a useful sort of magic.

Molly had still had that Doom of Damacles sentence over her head back home. If she'd been caught using her magic in that way she'd have been decapitated without question. As it was, when Harry had been dead she'd been put on the Public Enemy list. It had only been Ramirez and Ebenezer who had kept the Wardens off her trail.

She thought another streetrat would have appreciated that so she preened under the praise. Then she paid attention to what Briar was doing.

The magic use near her grated against her senses like ants stomping over exposed nerves, but she ignored the pain, shut it out the way Lea had taught her to. She'd pay for it later.

Meanwhile she watched the leaves sprout up out of the ground and her baby blue eyes went wide. "Holy shit! You brought forth life!"

Brought forth was it exactly, and Briar just grinned and sat back on his heels. "It was already there. Sleeping. I just asked it to come up."

It hadn't taken a lot of his energy, plants that weren't used to magic responded a lot better to it than those who were in spelled earth. But it was more than he'd use in his day to day, and he'd feel the extra drain tomorrow.

Nothing a cup of tea wouldn't remedy.

Molly smiled to see him grin. It suited him, she decided. "Sure, but I couldn't have done that and I doubt my teacher could have either." Without a potion that would have taken a long time to make.

"That's really cool," she said as she tossed a piece of funnel cake at him.

Usually, Briar didn't have much reason to be grinning. He'd had a hard life and it showed in him. He wasn't just some dumb fifteen(ish) year old kid.

"It's okay," he said, tossing one right back before picking up the piece she threw and just eating it. He knew better than to waste any bite of food. "Rosethorn does it better."

His teacher was a more powerful mage than he was.
