After Teddy's birth, Remus Lupin, realising that his child's future is at risk and losing hope for a positive outcome, begins work on a complex spell to change not only the future, but the past. He intends to use the spell to send a message to his past self, to prompt a slight realignment of events that would lead to a very different outcome. However, realising that such an endeavour could very well lead to his son not being born at all, he changes his mind, and leaves for the Battle of Hogwarts without releasing the spell. Then, as he lays dying and seeing his dead wife beside him, he decides it is worth the risk and speaks the required incantation with his dying breath. Unfortunately - perhaps - the spell doesn't work quite as he intended. He wakes up in 1978, about to leave Hogwarts for the last time, but with all forty-odd years of memory intact. Not only that, but eventually the effects of the spell begin to spread, as people on both sides of the coming war one by one begin to remember futures that haven't happened yet. Some may take it upon themselves to change the events that will doom them or their loved ones.
