Organizational Note to Readers

I've just transfered all the recs I made at the Live Journal version of Dusty Ryder's Recs here to Insane Journal. Unfortunately, it looks like some of the formatting is kind of screwed up, and all of the user-id tags are wrong. Also I need to fix my links, and get things organized. And it looks like some of the story and website links have gone bad since the last time I checked them - I'll have to fix those as well.

I'm going to have to dedicate some time and effort to fixing this journal up before its ready to see the public. I have my hands full at the moment, so that may take a week or two, sorry. I'll get everything taken care of as soon as I can, and hopefully this journal will be up and running by the new year - which is when I plan to start making new recs. I'll be making an announcement on [info]asylum_promo when everything is up and ready to go.

In the meantime, you have a few options, if you're really convinced that you need to read recs by me right this very minute:

1. You can check out this exact same list of recs at dustyrydersrecs - which is the Live Journal version. That's what this journal will look like when I get through with it. Well, not the same layout...I'm still working on that, but the links work, everything is organized and the formatting is right. The only problem is a few links, which I need to fix, anyway. I'll fix those first off, but if you run across any broken links before I get to them, let me know, and I'll fix them right up.

2. Check out Dusty Ryder @ del.icio.us. That's also a recs list, but there are some fundamental differences. The recs here and at Live Journal represent my very favorites - the ones I'll be reading over and over again for years. That account is for things I liked well enough to keep, in case I might like to read them again at some point. Big difference. At least to me.

Now since that account is much newer than this one and this one hasn't been updated for a while, Dusty Ryder @ del.icio.us does have fic that will eventually end up over here. I have a Favorites category - all of the three star favorites will end up here, some of the two star will as well, and maybe even some of the one star fic. But not the others, despite the fact that I like them well enough to read them again. :::shrugs::: I tend to do that a lot.

BTW - since I started that account about the time I became obsessed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you'll find more Buffy recs there than anything else. It's a work in progress. I post there as I read the fic - so I have to add the older fic when I have spare time...you know how that goes... :::rolls eyes::: But most of my fandoms are represented there by now.

3. Visit [info]smutday or the LJ version - smutday to read my (and other member's) smutty recs. That means NC17 fic, with almost no exceptions. You can find the recs on the tags list (down the side of the main page) by fandom, or you can read the posted fic by author. Just don't forget, at Smutday we're not looking for complicated plotlines and slow-building romances. We're only in it for the Smut.

Okay...so that's about it. Until I get this up and running, those are the options I can suggest for you. Thanks for stopping by, and I'll see you in the new year!

Dusty

Firefly

Fandom: Firefly
Series: Glue
Author: Rebecca ([info]blueraccoon)
Genre: Slash, Drama, Angst, First Time, Hurt/Comfort
Pairing: Mal/Simon
Rating: PG - NC17
Warnings: BCSM, Dom/sub, Fisting
Spoilers: None, really

Notes: I usually go looking for Mal/Jayne when I look at Firefly fic, but since this was Rebecca, I thought I'd read at least the first one, and see if I wanted to read more.  I finished the entire series that night, and was sad it was over.  Then I read it again.  And today, I decided to rec it, and re-read it again...just looking for warnings and such I might have forgotten...or something like that, yeah, that's it....

As usual with Rebecca, it's not an easy journey, but it works for me.  The main pairing in the series may be Mal and Simon, but pretty much all the characters are represented.  And they all fit.  If it weren't for the sex and stuff, this could be an episode - or several episodes, really.  It's all about how everyone fits into the crew, the way they fit together is like a jigsaw, according to River, and Mal and Simon are missing pieces that the other can fill.  The whole crew is like that, really, they just fit.  And Rebecca makes it work, and makes it enjoyable to read at the same time.

Stargate SG-1

Fandom: Stargate SG-1
Title: Grounded
Author: Pares ([info]kormantic)
Genre: Angst, First Time, Hurt/Comfort, Slash, Humor
Pairing: Jack/Daniel
Rating: NC17
Warnings: Existential Angst
Spoilers: Slight mention of Season Seven, Episode One - Fallen

Notes: This is a short piece, but very enjoyable.  Daniel is going through a mid-life crisis (uh, which life he's not really sure...)   Jack realizes something is wrong when he finds Daniel's notebook, filled quotes from dead philosophers like Kierkegaard.  So he kidnaps Daniel to get him out of the mountain, and things get a little out of hand.  I love the fact that he quotes Sappho - uh, never mind...not going to spoil anything, just read it and enjoy.

Oh, yeah.  There was a website listed for Pares on her Live Journal, but I kept getting an error message.  It may be temporary, so try it again, if you'd like...it may show up later.

Notes: One of my favorite stories by The Grrrl.  They're trapped off world, and captured and abandoned by native soldiers, during wartime.  The way they care for each other, and find happiness together is beautiful.  It's not that simple, the way they're drawn is complex and intriguing, and the story holds your attention all the way through.  This story just makes me happy.

Sequel Author: Ellex ([info]ellex42)
Genre: Slash, First Time, Drama, Angst, Hurt/Comfort
Pairing: Sheppard/McKay
Rating: NC17
Warnings: Dark, BDSM, Violence
Spoilers: Season Two - general mentions of Ronon

Notes: Wow.  When the [info]sga_flashfic's Shark Challenge came up, those of us who like our fic a little on the dark side got lucky.  Not only did [info]magus_minor write an excellent trilogy but more than one person took her up on the opportunity to write their own fic based on hers.  They're all good, but [info]ellex42's trilogy is just as good, if not better than the originals.  Okay, so my bias is showing...there are really only two problems with the first three: they're too short, and there's not enough sex.   You know me.  I always go for the sex - especially when it's kinky sex.  And it's definitely kinky sex.

In the first trilogy, Magus Minor sets up the premise:  John just happens to be a lot darker than people think...he's a sadist, and he enjoys it, although he tries hard to hide it, for obvious reasons.   I can't explain how because it would be a big time spoiler, but Rodney finds out.  The first trilogy leaves us there, without a real resolution - which is why, I'm sure, that Magus Minor threw out the invitation to others to write their own sequels.  And here's where Ellex comes in.  She takes that premise, and has Rodney turn the tables on John, and let me tell you - it's hot as hell.  I'm not going to say any more, you'll just have to read them and find out for yourself.

Oh, yeah...I honestly can't tell you how happy it made me to have Magus Minor use Mac the Knife to tie her three fic together.  I love The Threepenny Opera.  And another thing: Ellex's Frenzy was written for the 2006 version of the Kink and Cliche Challenge.  Damn but that challenge has had some good shit come out of it!

Genre: Slash, First Time, PWP, Angst, AU
Pairing: Keller/Sark
Rating: NC17
Warnings: Dark
Spoilers: None

Notes: I don't know a thing about Alias, except what Sistersleep and a few others have told me, but I love the character of Sark.  It's almost enough to get me into a new fandom, but I'm holding out, for the moment.  This AU is pure sex - hot, steamy and dangerous.  A perfect combination.  I love Keller, so real, so deadly, so in character, and I've been told that Sistersleep has captured Sark just as well.  I'm not surprised.  She's good like that.  So if you like your sex just shy of lethal, this is a good combination for you.  There are only the two right now, and she's said that there won't be more, but I keep my fingers crossed, 'cause I'd love to see another one, and besides, she has been known to give in to peer pressure...let her know if you like these, you never know.

Fandom: NCIS
Title: Words
Author: Nix ([info]crimsonquills)
Genre: Slash, PWP, Established Relationship
Pairing: Gibbs/DiNozzo
Rating: NC17
Warnings: Kink (blindfold)
Spoilers: None

Notes: I just love this fic.  Sorry, had to get that out before I said anything else.  I put PWP down under genre, but it's more than that.  Yes, it all happens in bed, and the sex is intense and hot as hell, but it's the revelations both Tony and Gibbs make while they're there that make this such a wonderful fic. And both characterizations just shine.  I can't really say too much more without spoiling it for you, but even if you don't read NCIS, you can read this one, and totally understand what's going on.  She puts it right out there for you, and I love her for it.

Notes: Beecher and O'Reily share the POV here, and you get a good sense of the relationship between the two during that whole first season.  I was totally suprised by the turn in the end, not expecting it at all.  But it's actually in character for both of them, especially if you take into account O'Reily's Season Two "I'm not a fag" attitude.

Notes: I'm not really sure why I haven't rec'd Sistersleep before - I didn't realize I hadn't until just now.  So I'll take care of that.   This is another one of the Kink and Cliche fic from last year.  Her prompt were: something with leather and voyeurism, and she covered them rather well I think.  And a few others as well.  This takes place during The Tip, when Adebisi is suffering from withdrawl and is restrained in his hospital bed.   When Alvarez slips him a pill to ease the pain, his drug-induced dream is fascinating, chilling and totally hot all at the same time.

Spoilers: Through Season 4, Episode 11 -  Revenge Is Sweet

Notes: This is another of last year's Kink and Cliche fic, using the prompt: Exhibitionism.  Not a real stretch for Oz, as Mandy's Bitch points out.  But she doesn't use the most obvious choice of sex behind the plexiglass walls of a pod.  She takes it in a different direction, and the result is disturbing and hot all at once, much like Keller - I could so see him doing something like this.  It's cruel, and even slightly against Ronnie's will (thus the noncon warning.)   It also gives us a bit of Keller and Schillinger's background - also disturbing - and very in character for them, as well.  I like the fact that Keller does't take his abuse lying down (oops, sorry - unintentional pun there.)

Notes: I don't know why, but I've always loved the scene between Beecher and Mondo in A Word to the Wise.  I love the way Beecher stares at Keller through the glass, the way he laughs at Mondo, and the way Mondo comes right back at him.  It's really a three way: Keller/Beecher/Brown, because despite the fact that they're in different rooms, Keller is very much a part of what happens.  This is a short piece, I kinda wish she'd done more, but it packs a punch, and just like  the rest of Rustler's fic, this one draws me in and makes me glad I read it.

Fic rec'd by Dusty: blueraccoon/Rebecca

Why this author? I started reading her pwp's because they were really hot, and perfect for rec'ing on Smut Day Wednesdays.  She writes a lot of BDSM and Dom/sub, and she does it well, which is an improvement on about 90% of what's out there, and that makes me very happy.  I enjoy her characters, they're well rounded and fun when they're supposed to be, and angstful when they're not.

She's very prolific, it seems like she's writing another fic every other day.  I like her short ficlets and "60-Second Porn" installments, which often don't make it into the NCIS FanFiction Archive, so at the moment, you have to read them on her journal or her brand new website, Rebecca's Realm.  They're listed in her memories on her journal and under NCIS fic: "60 Seconds" on her website.  And they're well worth it.

She doesn't just write slash, I just rec'd a series that starts out het.  She has a writing partner, [info]skripka (who you may notice, I've rec'd before), and the two together often write het.   As a matter of fact, I just noticed that skripka started a new NCIS comm [info]gibbs_abby, and if there ever was a het pairing I could get behind it would be that one, so I thought I'd mention it.  It's sure to have Rebecca's fic in it.

Rebecca doesn't just write smut, either.  For instance, I've been debating whether to rec her 4 part series Paradigm Shift, which involves a lot of case files, as well as a slowly developing relationship between Gibbs and Tony (no BDSM, this time, either), and I've read it at least three times, which makes it more than eligible for this rec journal.  But I just rec'd my third or 4th fic by her, so I decided to just mention it here, and try and give a few different authors a chance, you know?

Edited To Add: Since I wrote this, Rebecca has written a new series that is threatening to become one of my favorites, ever. It's called Geometry and it starts out as an NCIS case fic with BDSM overtones. The only sex is with her two Original Male Characters who live a heavily BDSM lifestyle, and it's only peripherally involved in the plot. The rest of the series, however, involves Tony becoming a friend of Stephen and Joshua's, and becoming interested in their lifestyle. I'm enjoying them a great deal.

I believe there's only one more in the series, and it will be the first we've seen of Gibbs/Tony. So I'm especially looking forward to that one. But you can read the others without feeling like you're hanging on waiting for the last part. They finish quite naturally, and could end there, if it weren't for the fact that Rebecca has promised me she'll get Gibbs and Tony together before the series is over.

The Usuals:
Usual Fandoms:  NCIS is what I ususlly rec, but I just read a Firefly series that blew me away, and I'll be rec'ing it later today.
Usual Pairings: NCIS: Gibbs/Tony, Gibbs/Abby, Gibbs/Abby/Tony
                          Firefly: Mal/Simon
Usual Genres: BDSM, Dom/sub, Bondage, Smut,  Angst, Hurt/Comfort
Usual Ratings: R - NC17
Usual Warnings: Her BDSM can get harsh, with lots of Hurt before the Comfort starts, but she always warns for this in her notes, so just pay attention before you start reading.

Notes: From the first Kink and Cliche Challenge ('05)  There were many good Oz fic that came out of that first K&C Challenge, but this one really caught me.  Very hot, very intense.  And very much in character for both of them.  I can actually see this happening, if Keller and Beecher had met up outside Oz.  Keller's agressive, in control and just a bit frightening, especially considering what you know about him if you know the whole series.  But you don't need to know the series to enjoy this fic, it's hot as hell, no matter what.

Fandom: NCIS
Series: Applied Psychology
Author: Rebecca ([info]blueraccoon)
Genre: Slash, Het, Angst, Drama, Smut, First Time, Hurt/Comfort
Pairing: Gibbs/Abby, Gibbs/Abby/Tony, Gibbs/Tony
Rating: NC17
Warnings: BDSM, Dom/sub, bondage
Spoilers: At least through Frame Up, Season 3, Episode 9

Notes: There may be those of you out there wondering why I'm rec'ing a series that (for the first three parts, at least) is exclusively Het.  Yeah, I'm wondering that myself.  Well, no, I'm not really wondering - there are a bunch of good reasons: Rebecca wrote it; it's BDSM, with a heavy dose of Dom/sub; it's not only got Gibbs in it, but it's got Abby, too.  Those are all pretty damn good reasons on their own.  And then, she brings Tony into the mix in Control Theory and okay, I'm hooked.   I tried to fight it.  I didn't read any of them for the longest time, but I finally sucumbed, and here I am, the very next week, rec'ing it for the second week in a row.  (I rec'd it last Wednesday, in my Smut Day post, so some of you may have seen this already.  Sorry.)

This rec has taken forever to write.  Why, you ask?  Because as I added each fic to the listing above, I re-read it.  Yeah.  I couldn't help myself.  Well, that just means it really must belong here, right?  Since I only rec fic I'm willing to read more than once.  It definitely belongs here.  There's a very strong D/s theme, and you know by now how I feel about that.   And I absolutely adore Abby, so this series really makes me happy all the way around.  When she added Tony into the mix, Rebecca added a good dollop of angst and a plot line that extends past the bedroom.  Not essential for me, but it makes things interesting.  I love fic that are focused around Tony; I find his character fascinating, so that's even a bigger plus.

Jeez - I can't thing of anything about these fic that I don't like (well, except for that icky het thing, but hey, for Abby, I can even go for some het - I can deal with that.)  So I suggest you try them for yourself, and Enjoy!

ETA: The link at the top of the page is to the tag to the Applied Psychology Series on Rebecca's Journal. She has recently aquired a website and has added more fic to this series, but for some reason, I can't link to the page that has all of her Applied Psychology fic listed. So here's a link to the first one (Pavlovian Response), and they are linked together after that. Or you can go to her main NCIS page and on the right at the bottom, right above the link to the "60 Seconds" pieces is the link to the Applied Psychology Series.

Fic rec'd by Dusty: Xanthe

Why this author?
Between the X-Files fic that I've been reading for months and months now, and the new SGA fic she's been writing, I know I'll cover the three fic limit, as soon as I start fic'ing her stories.  So I thought I'd get a head start on it, now.  The first thing I read by Xanthe was very, very heavy on Torture/NonCon/BDSM and as she put it, "Physical, emotional and psychological abuse."  So I had a good idea of what she could do from the very beginning.  I've never made it through all her X-Files fic - she wrote many pairings including Het and Gen, so you know me, I never got around to a good many of those.  I have no doubt that they live up to her standard, but they're just not my thing...

And since she's been on LJ, she's been getting into SGA.  She's already written a couple of long fic, including one novel-length fic that's full of all the Angst, NonCon and Torture you could expect from a Xanthe fic.  She's fond Carson, so I expect we'll see more of him, as well as Sheppard/McKay.    I understand she's working on a long piece right now - I think she called it BDSM-Lite.   She can actually get a little on the heavy side for me, sometimes, so this should be interesting for me.

Check out her website if you like Dr. Who and West Wing, she's written in both those as well.  And she's started two new comms on Live Journal:  [info]slashspank - a multi-fandom journal for Discipline and Erotic Spanking, and [info]atlantiskink - a predominantly slash, but open community for Atlantis fic, discussion and art of the Kink persuasion.  Well, she manages to keep busy, doesn't she?

Fandom: X-Files
Title: The Adversary
Author: Xanthe ([info]xanthelj)
Genre: Slash, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Drama, AU, Novel Length
Pairing: Mulder/OMC, Mulder/Others, Mulder/Skinner
Rating: NC17
Warnings: NonCon, Rape, Torture - Physical and Psychological, BDSM, Bondage, Extreme Violence
Spoilers: Don't remember any.

Notes:  This is an extremely intense story. It was the first fic I'd read by Xanthe, and one of the earliest X-Files stories I'd ever read.  It pretty much defined Mulder Bashing for me. But as hard as it was to read, I couldn't stop.  I'd pretty much figured out the whole deal about Mulder's lover from grad school, so that wasn't a big deal to reveal, but hey.  What's just one more step on the way to Mulder's eventual capitulation.  And from the way he was treated, I couldn't see it going down any other way.

Even so, I kept telling myself how smart Mulder was, and how he could manage to keep his sanity throughout this whole breaking down process; and the fact that he managed to continue to work his way into his Adversary's mind at the same time gave me hope...albeit a very small amount.  By the time it's over, you'll be blinking your eyes and shaking your head, too.  I know I was.  It's the case of the car accident that you just can't look away from as you drive past.  So you back up and park, get out of the car and go poking around.  You just can't help yourself.

About the AU.  Something in Mulder's past is changed, but it does not effect the present day of the fic.  Mulder still works for Skinner and his partner is still Scully.  The Cigarette Smoking Man is there turning the screws as usual, and the Rat Bastard is hanging out, being totally unpredictable - also as usual.   If you don't mind a bit of torture, you've got a solid stomach, and you like a lot of Mulder Torture - this is the fic for you.  And no, I don't know what it says about me, that I've read this one more than once...well, more than twice, okay?

Favorite Author Category

With this post, I'm starting a new Category.  If I've rec'd an author at least three time, I think they deserve to be recognized as a favorite, well-loved author.  And there may be some I haven't rec'd three times, yet, just because I've not gotten my journal up to date, yet.  So they'll go in this category, too.   If I miss someone I have rec'd often enough, please remind me, I'll be glad to include them.

Many of these authors will span more than one Fandom, and that's okay, I'll tag them for every fandom I would recomend them for.  They may write in others, too, but if I haven't read it, I can't rec it, can I?  I won't rec every individual fic I do like by them, either, 'cause with some of them that would take all day.  But since I've added an author category in the tags, you should be able to find the recs I've already given for them, just by clicking on their name in the tags.  That's a start, anyway.

This is a work in progress, so if I don't like the way the post looks, I may revamp it, and try it a different way.  If you'd like different information than I'm giving you, leave me a comment, and I'll see what I can do.  Actually, I think I'll start the new recs with the next post, so this one is just a sort of an explanation.  Tell me what you think about the idea, and the way it works.  Thanks.

ETA: I forgot to mention: this new category and the changes to the comm are due to the kindness of my hero, Cat - ([info]cheights), whose generosity has supplied us with a 6 month paid journal for my birthday...wasn't that sweet of her? Now I get to add all those links I've been wanting to play with. Whee!!!

Fic rec'd by Dusty: komos/paian

Why this author?
Her fic are incredibly dense - everything is intense and extremely well thought out and realistic and they just make you yearn for a happy resolution - a resolution that does not always come.  And even when it does?  It's often bittersweet and melancholic, and even when I know the ending isn't going to be one of the happy ones (I should know, I've read them all more than once), I still wish for it, anyway.

Her fic are usually high on angst and drama, with extremely well rounded characters that grab you and just don't let go.  I really love to read her Jack O'Neill.  You'll see the crazy oaf that you see portrayed in canon and fic, but what I love seeing is the deadly, black ops Colonel that you know is in there, and only seems to comes out when needed.  You see a lot more of him in Komos' work, and that makes me happy, because you know he didn't get to where he is now by being a baffoon.

Oh, yeah, and she writes some of the most intense sexual situations I've ever read.

She hasn't written that many fic, you can read them all in a fairly short time.  I'd recommend it.  She also recs a lot from her journal; it's worth keeping up with, she has good taste in fic.

Did I mention I want to be her when I grow up?

Her usuals:
Usual Pairing: Jack/Daniel
Usual Genres: Slash, Angst, Drama, Character Study, Hurt/Comfort, Very Intense Sexual Experiences
Usual Ratings: R or NC17
Occasional Warnings: Could contain talk of Non-Con, Torture (mostly refered to in past-tense)

I rate this Author:  This Is The Best Shit
She is also worthy of: The Dusty Seal of Approval

Batman

Fandom:  Batman (Comic)
Title:  Seizin
Author:  elynross  ([info]elynross)
Genre:  First Time, Slash, Angst
Pairing:  Dick/Other, Bruce/Dick
Rating: NC17
Warnings: Voyeurism
Spoilers: No clue.

Notes:  So I have to admit, I'm a bit uncertain as to exactly where this fic is based...it could belong to the Comic or there was a Graphic Novel series, too, wasn't there?  I just don't know enough about them.  I'm much more familiar with the early (campy)  tv series and the films, but I'm positive this doesn't belong to those.  This is a fairly dark piece, with lots of angst, so you tell me where it fits, I don't know.  But I can tell you this.  It's pretty damn hot.  And I like the pictures it draws of Bruce and Dick.  Dick is 19, rebellious and passionate, and Bruce is angry - at Dick and at his own hunger for what he considers forbidden.  They're complex characters - things aren't black and white, good and bad - there are all sorts of shades in this fic, and it just struck me hard.  Well done.

I rate this fic:  Pretty Damn Good
