Firefly

Fandom: Firefly
Series: Glue
Author: Rebecca ([info]blueraccoon)
Genre: Slash, Drama, Angst, First Time, Hurt/Comfort
Pairing: Mal/Simon
Rating: PG - NC17
Warnings: BCSM, Dom/sub, Fisting
Spoilers: None, really

Notes: I usually go looking for Mal/Jayne when I look at Firefly fic, but since this was Rebecca, I thought I'd read at least the first one, and see if I wanted to read more.  I finished the entire series that night, and was sad it was over.  Then I read it again.  And today, I decided to rec it, and re-read it again...just looking for warnings and such I might have forgotten...or something like that, yeah, that's it....

As usual with Rebecca, it's not an easy journey, but it works for me.  The main pairing in the series may be Mal and Simon, but pretty much all the characters are represented.  And they all fit.  If it weren't for the sex and stuff, this could be an episode - or several episodes, really.  It's all about how everyone fits into the crew, the way they fit together is like a jigsaw, according to River, and Mal and Simon are missing pieces that the other can fill.  The whole crew is like that, really, they just fit.  And Rebecca makes it work, and makes it enjoyable to read at the same time.

Fic rec'd by Dusty: blueraccoon/Rebecca

Why this author? I started reading her pwp's because they were really hot, and perfect for rec'ing on Smut Day Wednesdays.  She writes a lot of BDSM and Dom/sub, and she does it well, which is an improvement on about 90% of what's out there, and that makes me very happy.  I enjoy her characters, they're well rounded and fun when they're supposed to be, and angstful when they're not.

She's very prolific, it seems like she's writing another fic every other day.  I like her short ficlets and "60-Second Porn" installments, which often don't make it into the NCIS FanFiction Archive, so at the moment, you have to read them on her journal or her brand new website, Rebecca's Realm.  They're listed in her memories on her journal and under NCIS fic: "60 Seconds" on her website.  And they're well worth it.

She doesn't just write slash, I just rec'd a series that starts out het.  She has a writing partner, [info]skripka (who you may notice, I've rec'd before), and the two together often write het.   As a matter of fact, I just noticed that skripka started a new NCIS comm [info]gibbs_abby, and if there ever was a het pairing I could get behind it would be that one, so I thought I'd mention it.  It's sure to have Rebecca's fic in it.

Rebecca doesn't just write smut, either.  For instance, I've been debating whether to rec her 4 part series Paradigm Shift, which involves a lot of case files, as well as a slowly developing relationship between Gibbs and Tony (no BDSM, this time, either), and I've read it at least three times, which makes it more than eligible for this rec journal.  But I just rec'd my third or 4th fic by her, so I decided to just mention it here, and try and give a few different authors a chance, you know?

Edited To Add: Since I wrote this, Rebecca has written a new series that is threatening to become one of my favorites, ever. It's called Geometry and it starts out as an NCIS case fic with BDSM overtones. The only sex is with her two Original Male Characters who live a heavily BDSM lifestyle, and it's only peripherally involved in the plot. The rest of the series, however, involves Tony becoming a friend of Stephen and Joshua's, and becoming interested in their lifestyle. I'm enjoying them a great deal.

I believe there's only one more in the series, and it will be the first we've seen of Gibbs/Tony. So I'm especially looking forward to that one. But you can read the others without feeling like you're hanging on waiting for the last part. They finish quite naturally, and could end there, if it weren't for the fact that Rebecca has promised me she'll get Gibbs and Tony together before the series is over.

The Usuals:
Usual Fandoms:  NCIS is what I ususlly rec, but I just read a Firefly series that blew me away, and I'll be rec'ing it later today.
Usual Pairings: NCIS: Gibbs/Tony, Gibbs/Abby, Gibbs/Abby/Tony
                          Firefly: Mal/Simon
Usual Genres: BDSM, Dom/sub, Bondage, Smut,  Angst, Hurt/Comfort
Usual Ratings: R - NC17
Usual Warnings: Her BDSM can get harsh, with lots of Hurt before the Comfort starts, but she always warns for this in her notes, so just pay attention before you start reading.

Title: Like Describing The Alphabet

Genre: Slash, (Non-Explicit) FemSlash, (Non-Explicit) Het, Friendship, Angst, First Time, Romance, Humor, Established Relationship, Hurt/Comfort
Pairings/Characters: Mal/Jayne, Kaylee/Inara, Zoe/Wash, the crew of Serenity
Rating: NC17
Warnings: None
Spoilers:  Very minor spoilers for parts of the series.

Notes: So I was trying to get into the mood for writing my [info]slashfest Firefly fic, by reading some Mal/Jayne.  I figured it would be an easy way to work my way into the characterizations - that and watching a few episodes.  A form of painless mood adjustment.  (I'd just finished an NCIS fic and an X-Files fic, so I thought I could use a chance to get into the right mindset.)  I almost didn't read this one, because I recognized it when I started it, and thought I'd put it in the wrong favorites folder - Firefly Fics To Be Read vs Firefly Fics I've Already Read.  But I noticed Mosca mentioned that she'd written one version of the first scene for a ficathon, but that this was the fic that really needed to be written instead of that first version, so I kept reading.  Boy, am I glad I did.

It's not a short fic - took me most of the night to read - but it was well worth it.  This is much more than just a Mal/Jayne fic with sex...although there is a lot of nice, hot sex - no doubt about that.  But this is a story of the whole crew, revolving around Mal and Jayne, it's true, but they are all represented, and well done.  Every character is examined in their own way, and Mosca offers insight into each character with the same care she affords the two main characters.  And there is much insight, there.  I kept finding myself saying things like: "Now, why didn't I think of that?" and "Oooh, that's such a fascinating way of looking at this character's behavior."

And the feel of the series is kept intact.  The narrative style is similar to Mal and Jayne's cadences and inflections, but each character (and his/her voice) is well rounded, and they are all represented accurately, and with much care.  It's not an easy story - there are bumps and roadblocks and the story winds it's way along through them, until it finds it's resolution in the end, and despite the fact that things aren't perfect - you're satisfied that it works, and it all makes sense in the end.  There's not really much chance for a happily-ever-after in the Firefly 'verse, but this fic comes mighty close for me.

Although I've only read this one once, so far, I am so positive that this one's a keeper, that I'm willing to rec it with only one reading under my belt.  If I wasn't so tired, and didn't really, really need to work on my fic today, I'd probably start reading this one again, right now.  I figure it will have to wait until the New Year, since I've still got about 6 holiday fic to write in the next 3 or 4 weeks, but I'll be reading this one again in January.  And I'll be glad of it.

Notes: Mal needs to find a way to make it through Unification Day without starting a brawl.  Jayne proves to be just the distraction he's looking for.  I love the image of the black leather gloves Mal buys for Jayne - just a little bit of a kink, but fun.  It's hard to find good Mal/Jayne fic out there, and this is the second time I've rec'd a Eleanor K fic.  Hmm...maybe I need to start a category for Authors I Like To Rec?  It's a thought...

Notes: This fic is backstory - how Jayne ends up on Serenity, and the beginning of the relationship between Mal and Jayne.  It seems very much in character for both of them, with a great side plot of Wash and Zoe just becoming a couple, and Kaylee being her usual irrepressible self.  The whole thing just fits perfectly - if Mal and Jayne were canon, this could very easily be how it would have happened.  And it makes me smile.  There's just not enough Mal/Jayne fic out there.  :::stamps foot:::  Dammit.
