[Eddie's been veerrry careful around Stephanie since the failed birthday celebration. On Tuesday morning, Eddie's gone bright and early, but he's left her a green health juice in the fridge and a wildflower bouquet on the table with a note:]

Riddle me this: Should I visit Arkham to destroy my deactivated tech and check out new warden? y/n/vy?

	It's more like a menace. [He makes a little eegghhheeaha noise through his teeth as she runs her nails up and down his torso. Eyes closing as if he's trying very hard not to enjoy the feeling. [She looks horrified at his response and pulls her hands out from under his shirt completely. Smirking the whole time. It's not like her to tease him for touches, but she's still feeling off from the other day and clearly trying to recapture something by any means necessary. She looks athim for a second, smirking.] You call me a menace and you don't answer my question. [Turning around to continue with dinner, or at least fake it. Her body curved so that she's pressed against him just so.] Crane doesn't know pain.

[Uuuuuuuugghhh as she pulls away from him with feeble attempts to pull her back. But, he's holding back a laugh. When she turns around, he wraps his arms around her whether she likes it or not and tugs her closer, dipping his head down into the crook of her neck.] Do you really need an answer? [A hum into her skin.] The funny part is that hurting Crane like that isn't going to stop him. Pain fuels guys like that. It fueled me for years and years.

[A splutter and a whine as he pulls her close, as if she didn't want him near her every second of every day. Crossing her arms over her chest to resist touching him. Needling.] I'd really like an answer, Edward Nashton. You can't deny me that. You can't deny me anything. [Said proudly, even if there's a twinge of something else underneath that.] He's just gonna have a better reason to come back and throw a fit again. [Smirk. She doesn't turn around to look at him once.] Fueled? Past tense?

[Whispered into her skin as his hands sneak under her shirt. There's something else in his voice, too.] That's right, you're the great denier in this relationship. [He kisses her neck and bites her earlobe as if he had whispered something sweet instead of so true it kind of hurts. All an attempt to get her to kiss him back.] Pain doesn't propel me forward. It wakes me up, but it doesn't get my blood pumping like it used to.

[There's a quiet, sad sound from her chest, like he's stabbed her right in the heart. She stiffens in his arms, then deflates immediately. She doesn't return his kisses, but she doesn't rebuke the advances either. Cracked out like she's trying not to let it affect her:] Yeah, I am. You're right. I am. [A shuddering sigh as she slumps forward, halfheartedly continuing on with dinner. Softly.] If you like pain so much it explains why you're staying with me then.

[The quick turn surprises him, but he doesn't move back. His eyebrows lower and his expression softens. Eddie takes her hands and kisses her fingers. There's really no more anger left in him.] Sometimes when I get hit or shot or cut up, I can't even feel it. I look down and see blood and I don't feel a goddamned thing. [He adjusts his weight, eyes trained on hers, begging her to look at him.] When I hurt and kill things? I don't feel anything either. It's like having a dead nerve in my leg. There's nothing. [He inhales slowly and doesn't let go of their tangled up fingers.] The things you can do to me just by sighing blow my mind. So, maybe I'm a little hurt, you know, but it's only because of all the good stuff you've made me feel over the years. You make me feel good, baby. I'm not burying that under any kind of pain I'm going through. I refuse.

[Stephanie, in turn, feels a little weak and defeated in his gaze, folding into herself despite his attack of affection on her fingers. She doesn't tug away though, doesn't deny herself his affection because she's so weak for him. Her blues flicker around the room, up, side-to-side, then down to the floor as she stares at their bare feet for a second. Quietly.] I don't want you to be hurt, Eddie. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have ever said anything the other day. I was being drunk and stupid, and I shouldn't have said anything. [She looks up at him suddenly, but she's still practically limp.] You make me feel too good. I don't deserve it.

[When she suddenly looks up at him, Stephanie can see that he's listening very closely. Almost sizing up her words. There's a hesitation, an inhale of breath as his mouth hangs open like he wants to say something. His mouth slowly closes and he rolls his tongue against his bottom lip, looks up and then back down at her.] Was any of that stuff you said true? About what you want. About what you think we can have?

[She swallows hard.] And it's my fault you still even think you're broken. I'm the one who did it. So if this is punishment, just tell me. [Said desperately and she pushes her whole fist into his chest before her hands fall all together.]

[Finally, and seemingly out of nowhere, he yells at her. It's loud and sharp like how he yelled at Underground Justice Leaguers for fucking up a mission.] I'm not punishing you! This new life that you want? I can't give you it. I spent years and years knowing it would never happen for us. And, now that we're back here you think I can just pick up the pieces again? I'm broken. [He gasps and looks away from her. When his big brown eyes finally catch her gaze again he looks apologetic and surprised at himself.] I can't put it back together. I'm sorry. I can't do that for you. All I can do is love you, give you all these mismatches parts of me. That's all I have.

[She snaps, too.] I just thought things would get better! Now we're here, baby, and we're safe, and I thought things could get better! [Silent tears are starting to spill down her cheeks, and she catches his face in her hands when he looks back at her.] It's gone now. We're finished with it. I thought if we ever got back home, we could just leave all that ugliness back there where it belongs. [Her fingers dig into his cheeks slightly.] And that's fucking stupid and selfish of me, but it's true. [She brushes a hand across his cheekbone.] I'm always here to put you back together, baby.

[He opens his eyes and makes a noise as she cries and clears the counter with his arm, picks her up and sits her down in front of him. He nudges between her legs and pulls her close, kissing every part of her he can get close to. Hands smoothing over her thighs as he finally looks back up at her.] Promise me you're not going to leave if you can't. If there's always a piece missing.

[She relents finally when he shoves her onto that counter, arms wrapping around his neck as she bites down on her lip to stop the tears. Fingers tangling into his hair until he can feel sharp pull against his hair.] I just thought--for once, I thought we could leave something behind. I thought we'd be able to just let it go. [And she's still crying, but she's competing to kiss every part of him she can reach in his own frenzy. Her arms tug him closer.]

I promise, baby. I promise [She catches his lips in a messy, desperate sort of kiss. Then presses kisses on his jaw, his cheeks, his forehead. Anywhere her mouth can reach.] Don't give up on me if I can't. Don't wake up one day and walk out because you've finally remembered I'm the reason you're screwed up in the first place.

[He tries to console her as she cries. Telling her it's okay, that everything is going to be okay and that he loves her between kisses. He's desperate, too as if he's been denied affection for too long and drinks up anything she gives him.] You're stuck with me. I promise. You're stuck with me. [He tugs her chin down with his thumb and finger to press a kiss to her lips. He lingers there for a little while, lips still brushed against her and breath hot on her skin.] I kissed your hands. [Then, like a lightbulb went off.] Your hands were covered in raw chicken. I think I just gave you salmonella poisoning. [Eddie tries so hard to make her smile.] It was out of love, though.

Something broken and sniffly, and she wipes the back of her forearm across wet eyes. Joking soaked in croaky leftover tears.] Well, my tongue was just in your mouth so I probably have it, too. [She looks behind her at the messy counter. Affectionately.] And you knocked over my dinner prep. I think we're even?
