[Eddie's been veerrry careful around Stephanie since the failed birthday celebration. On Tuesday morning, Eddie's gone bright and early, but he's left her a green health juice in the fridge and a wildflower bouquet on the table with a note:]

[He smiles like there's a twist ending. Isn't there always with him?] I was fourteen. Just ran away from my pop and joined the carnival on the boardwalk. You should have seen it back then. It was beautiful and the people there were slimy. Each of them a different kind of thief. This French girl came over to Gotham on a ship with her papa. Well, he got sick and died, so she stayed as one of the dancers before magic shows. She was just a year older than me. Thin as a rail. Angry at life. I thought she was the bee's knees.

Deeply. I was intoxicated. She didn't like anyone. Boys, girls, men, women. It didn't matter, she hated all of them. Sometimes I'd do tent announcing for her shows and hear her backstage complaining in that thick French accent about everyone. Including me! Even though she knew I could hear her. [He inches closer to Stephanie.] Back then I knew I couldn't charm her. Honestly, I couldn't charm anyone if I wasn't talking in my carnie voice. I was too interested in learning how to pickpocket and build things. So, how could I possibly get this girl to kiss me?

[Fingers gently running up her arm.] No, no. A girl like that would see it coming a mile away. I bargained for it. I told her that the other girls were taught a dance number without her to try and get her fired on account no one liked her. I said if she kissed me and I thought it was a good kiss, I'd tell her what song it was and write out all the steps to the dance. She fell for it, kissed me even though she hated my guts and learned a number I made up from the top of my head.
