Day Seven - Early Morning
Who: Shannon Rutherford & Shizuka Domeki
What: Early morning practice
When: Asscrack of dawn
Where: Initially the museum, then the carnival probably
Rating: PG- something or other (but probably no more than 13)
Status: Complete

The snow already beginning to press against the door of the thrift shop made it a bit difficult to leave and the snow already beginning to accumulate on the streets and walks of the town made the trek to the museum something slow and labored. Domeki, figuring that it would take him a while to make the hike across town, had chosen to leave before it had even begun to get light outside and it proved to be a wise choice - aside from the fact that he found himself already chilled nearly to the bone by the time he paused before the large door leading into the museum.

Domeki flexed the bare and numb fingers of his hands as he debated whether or not to knock. He knew that knocking was, essentially, the only way he could let Shannon know that he had arrived but there was an equal chance that he might awaken one of the gentlemen currently staying with her - and then he might have to explain what he wanted with his big sister at this hour and also why he was currently carrying a bow.

After a moment of silent debate, he finally raised his hand and rapped his numb knuckles against the wood of the door. He could only hope that, should Shannon not be the one to answer, whoever did liked early morning knock knock jokes.

Knowing that she would be meeting Domeki early in the morning, Shannon had talked Sam into sleeping with her the previous night and letting Jack or the Doctor take watch. It was selfish two-fold, really, because the idea of sleeping at the same time with Sam for a change was kind of nice on top of the fact that if he was still asleep when the sun was starting to rise, she thought it might be easier to extract herself and meet with Domeki without having to explain herself.

So, as soon as she woke up, she laid awake in Sam's arms in the dark, trying to keep herself from dozing again before finally he rolled just right and she could move away without fear of waking him up in the process. When she did, she dressed in as many layers as she could stand.

The knock at the door caught her attention and she hurried to it, grunting a little as she pushed the display out of the way and pulled the door open a crack to peek outside. Seeing Domeki with a bow in hand, Shannon smiled and slipped out the door, shutting it behind herself. "Morning," she said softly, stifling a yawn behind her hand. "My turn to be 'young grasshopper,' right?" she asked with a wink before giving him a hug - partially because she was always happy to see him and partially because she was already cold.

Looking over her shoulder as she did so, Shannon noticed the additional accumulation of snow and raised her eyebrows as she pulled away from him. It was still coming down. "Shit, it's really coming down..." she murmured, wondering just how much snow they'd have before it stopped.

"Morning, big sister," Domeki replied. He offered her a smile and he accepted her hug gratefully - partially because it was a welcome gesture from someone whom he had already begun to think of in terms of family and also because it really was freezing out in the open air. When she drew back, he wrapped an arm around himself and huddled down a bit into the worn leather jacket he had borrowed from the thrift store - but he was still all too aware how quickly he'd again find himself chilled through and through.

"I guess that makes me the wise master?" He asked just a bit uncertainly. It had been a long while since he had tried to give archery lessons - and, even that one time, he had been working with an underclassman who had asked for lessons more in the hope of having time with him than anything else. He was confident in his own skills, this much was true, but he wasn't sure how easily they could be passed along. "Though you still have much to teach me in the ways of your slang."

"Mm, I think the thrift store will be entirely snowed in before too much longer," Domeki agreed. The thought caused him a moment of worry for Watanuki, as well as the others who could end up trapped inside the store without supplies, but the worry soon resolved into a determination to bring back some food and water once the lesson was over. "We should probably start walking over - it might help us keep warm a little longer and I'd hate for the snow to get too deep for us to walk in."

Shannon, too, hugged herself against the cold. The Island had sucked in its own way, but the weather here was ridiculously uncomfortable. She found herself secretly hoping that the temperature would rise as drastically and quickly as it had fallen...and soon. "Guess so," she said, reaching over and tousling his hair just to spite him, winking and grinning as she did so. At his second comment, Shannon laughed. "Oh yes, you have much to learn, young grasshopper," she teased.

Domeki said that he thought the thrift store would be snowed in before long if the snow kept up and Shannon had to bite back another offer for him to stay with her at the museum. She hated the idea of him being stuck in there, but on the other side of the coin, at least she thought it meant that the sick fucks running this place would have a hard time getting to him. Maybe being snowed in would keep him safe for the time being. At that thought, she relaxed a little.

"Yeah, good point," she agreed when he suggested they get moving both to keep warm and at the prospect of trying to trudge through snow any deeper than it already was. She started them off, heading down the stairs and waiting at the bottom for him. The idea of hanging on him as they walked to keep warm occurred to her but it was immediately set off by the thought of how effing cold she was going to be at night, even with Sam spooning her. She was very nearly tempted to forgo Sam entirely in favor of Captain Jack and his insanely warm military jacket.

Shannon looked over at the bow, sizing it up. "Does it work? I mean, you know...considering the way they seem to think it's funny to leave us out here with nothing useful at all to defend ourselves..." she said softly, furrowing her brow slightly.

"Maybe you can start my lessons while I try to teach you about archery?" Domeki offered with the slightest of grins. Although he had never before felt all that interested in learning other languages, he did find that the idea of learning some of the more normal American slang could be useful - especially if he was going to have to spend more time in this place. It was convenient enough that other languages were apparently translated into his own but the magical means seemed to break down a little when it came to translating some of the more colorful phrases - and he almost felt as if he were missing something because of that.

It was only after he had spoken that Domeki realized that his statement about the thrift store could possibly be seen as an attempt to fish for an offer to stay with her at the museum and so he was a touch relieved when Shannon chose not to respond. Not that he wouldn't be happy to stay with her but his sense of duty - and his bond to his classmate, even if he often chose to ignore that part of it - made him feel that it was slightly more important that he make sure that Watanuki was also safe. There was also his concern for Bell to think of and the fact that anyone still in the thrift store by the afternoon would likely be in need of someone to bring them back some basic goods.

He followed her carefully down the stairs and he offered Shannon his arm almost without thinking once he had made it to her side. Not that he didn't trust her to be able to make her own way but the snow was already getting rather deep and it'd likely be easier for both of them to trudge safely through if they had someone to lean on - or to pull them along. "This has to be the worst winter weather I've ever seen. I don't think I've ever seen a snowfall this deep - it almost seems like it'll never stop."

"I practiced with it a bit last night and it deep seem to be in fairly good condition. The string is flexible and strong - I don't think you'll have any trouble with it." Domeki had been a little surprised that the bow he had found had turned out to be of the traditional type with which he was more familiar - given the way things had run here, he had expected it would be a compound bow or something quite a bit more modern. The fact that this made things easier did make him glad but he couldn't help but wonder if it was as much a gift as he had first thought. "The only real trouble is that one of the arrows is broken and I haven't found a way to patch it so that it'll still be able to fly." He frowned a bit at this but he had already decided that, should this lesson go well, he might take a chance on contacting the one who had written in the journals about being able to make basic weapons - a few new arrows would be ideal and, should she take a liking to the weapon, perhaps a basic bow for Shannon, as well.

Shannon smirked back at him. "I can't teach slang on demand, it just has to come out," she said with a shrug. "Then I can explain as I go." It was a strange idea to be teaching someone dirty words and phrases, but she thought possibly the only way she could pull it off was to do it just like that. Trying to come up with that sort of thing off the top of her head on demand would be too difficult and probably confusing. If, however, he didn't mind learning as they went, she thought she might just be one of the better teachers for such a subject. Shannon might be a pretty, formerly rich girl, but she could have a mouth like a sailor if the situation called for it and she knew it.

With a grateful smile, Shannon linked her arm with Domeki's offered one and nestled herself against him, her head against his. The closer she was to him, the warmer they'd be. With that thought in mind, she released her arm from his again, only to slip her arm around his waist beneath his leather jacket. "You already know me way to well to be healthy," she joked. As they walked she looked out ahead of her at the snow still coming down. "Honestly, me too, but that's not saying a whole lot, since I'm from LA..." she replied with a grin.

"Oh good, except for the part where I'm gonna be trying to shoot a bow and arrow when I'm more used to shaking martinis and filing my fingernails..." she joked feebly. The idea that she was about to learn to use an actual weapon would've been ridiculous for her to consider a few months ago. In fact, if someone had told her that she was going to find solace in the protection of a tall guy who admittedly wasn't in her league financially, an adorably nerdy man who claimed to travel through time and space, and a man her father's age who looked like he fell out of the war and said he couldn't die, she'd have laughed in their face. If they then said that she'd consider a short, Asian kid kind of like family and was not only willing but eager to learn to shoot a bow and arrow, she'd have told them they were insane. But there it was.

Domeki said that one of the arrows was broken and she frowned. "Maybe we can find some glue or something in the pharmacy? Like, nail glue, you know? It's pretty lightweight and it holds like KraZee Glue," she suggested. She hadn't really looked around the pharmacy a lot, but there was a few pharmacies back home that had cosmetics selections and usually, within that, fake nails, glue, polish, and files. Actually, the files might come in handy, too, if they were there. She'd have to check...when it wasn't so fucking cold outside.

"Then I guess I'll just have to hang on your every word so I can catch what comes naturally," Domeki joked lightly. It wasn't his intention to put Shannon on the spot about her language and he really was just as likely to let the subject slip away. After all, learning he nuances of another language always seemed to come more naturally when the teacher wasn't pressed or too aware of what she should or should not be saying - and he certainly didn't want Shannon to feel as if this were some job or other burden. "It does make me glad, though, that there is something about this place that offers translations - I can't imagine how we'd manage otherwise."

"The same could be said for you. You probably know more about me than most of my classmates." This thought didn't really bother Domeki, even if it could be taken as something sad. On reflection, he would admit that it was a touch odd that he'd become closer to someone who was a foreigner to just about everything in his life than he had with the majority of the children his own age - but it seemed almost natural to be walking with her like this, even if there was nothing all that natural about their current situation. He allowed a contented smile to touch his features as he moved his arm to wrap around her shoulders - well, as best as he could manage given their difference in height. "It sounds like you were pretty lucky to be in LA if it meant no weather like this."

"Hm, does that mean we'll have to call off the lessons if you break a nail?" He teased her with light good humor. Truth be told, he wasn't all that worried about Shannon not being able to learn - he was rather more worried that she would have reason to learn whatever she might pick up. Not that he waned her to be helpless and not that he was deluded enough to think that they were entirely safe - more, the overprotective part of himself dreaded the thought of anything happening to his big sister. "I hate to think what would happen if you got calluses or cuts from the bowstring, then."

"That might be a good idea," he nodded slightly to her idea of looking in the pharmacy for something to fix the broken arrow but he figured that they should be alright with just the two for now - as long as they were careful not to let anything happen to them. "I'll check in there later, once the weather calms down a bit."

With a playful roll of her eyes, Shannon shook her head and resisted the urge to give Domeki a shrug. "Don't get smart, stay the way you are," she joked. It was something she'd heard her childhood friends' mothers say all the time and never ceased to amuse her. She never thought she'd actually use the phrase, though. "Yeah, we could never be friends otherwise," she said, furrowing her brow at the very thought. "If we couldn't, you know, understand each other..."

It made Shannon feel special to know that Domeki felt she knew more about him than most of his classmates. Her smile faltered a little when she realized that really...she didn't know all that much of substance about him except that his parents were dead and he was an only child. Then again, it wasn't like he knew an awful lot about her, either. Just whatever had happened to come up in conversation. There's still lots of time, she thought to herself and relaxed again. "Oh! It never snowed in LA. Not while I was alive, anyway. It's gorgeous. I mean, yeah, it rains sometimes, but doesn't it everywhere? It's...I don't know. There's no place like it. I miss it..."

Domeki's remark got a patronizing look in response. "Oh you're hilarious," she joked, rolling her eyes and wrinkling her nose as she smirked. "Like I'd really break a nail; please." She winked. The latter comment, though, made her smile fade a little. "Does that happen a lot? Cuts from the bowstring?" she asked nervously. Shannon didn't like that idea, seeing as how she didn't exactly have any Band-Aids.

Nodding, Shannon gave him a sideways half-hug and went on forward. "Sounds like a plan. I'd offer to go, but..." her voice trailed off. But I don't want to, didn't seem like a very nice thing to say. "Just be careful," she advised.

"Are you calling your little brother dumb?" Domeki asked innocently. He took a brief moment to fix his features into a hurt expression but there was still a hint of amusement in the darkness of his eyes. Clearly, he was already getting the hang of a few of her native idioms. "I guess that's one thing they managed to get right," he mused quietly. The thought that the ones in charge were actually doing something to help them confused him and put him a bit on edge but he tried not to think to deeply on that. "I can't imagine all of us walking around, speaking a dozen different languages."

"That does sound really nice," Domeki smiled at her description of her hometown. He found that he liked listening to Shannon talk, whether it was about where she was from or any number of other topics. It was almost soothing to be able to talk of normal things instead of focusing entirely on the hopelessness of the current situation. "I think I'd like to see LA sometime - and maybe some other places in the United States. It just sounds so different from where I grew up."

"I would hate to see you break a nail. I imagine it would be the end of the world," he teased her lightly, even as he shook his head to her latter question. "I've only seen anyone get injured like that maybe once or twice and, even then, it was normally because the kid was fooling around instead of doing what he was supposed to; I think you'll be alright."

"Don't worry about it," Domeki reassured her with a slight shake of his head. It really hadn't even occurred to him to ask her to go in search of the glue - not when it would be just as easy for him to get it. "It'll be a good chance to restock on a few things while I'm there."

Laughing, Shannon gave into the urge to give him a playful poke in the side. "Smart ass," she joked when she looked up and saw the amusement hiding behind his eyes, betraying the hurt expression he was trying to pass off on her. "I don't think they do anything by accident," she replied, resting her head against his again as they drew nearer to the carnival. "They made sure we could all understand each other, I think, because otherwise they'd have had to take all people with the same native language. That's no good if they're doing social experiments; we're the constants. Having a language variable would fuck up the actual experiments. You can only have one variable or it throws off the whole thing. I might be kinda dumb, but I do remember that much about science class," she replied with a grim smile and a shrug.

When Domeki agreed that Los Angeles sounded nice, Shannon nodded to herself against him and closed her eyes. She'd never be able to go back there again; she'd never get to experience how much she'd loved it there, for simple fear of at some point running into Sabrina and having to explain why she was alive...and Boone was not. "You'd like it," she said. "It's funny to me that someone would want to see the States, but then I'm from the States, so they're not all that interesting to me. If you get a chance, hit up New York City; I hear it's really nice. I almost went once..." she said, her voice trailing off slightly. It hadn't really worked out the way she'd have liked. "Tell you what..." she said thoughtfully. "You show me Japan and I'll show you LA. But I'd only go back for you," she added.

With a smirk, Shannon rolled her eyes. "Not the end of the world, but it does hurt like a bitch," she replied honestly. "I think that's why the whole bullshit about girls being so freaked about breaking a nail. Guys don't grow their nails out most of the time so they don't know any better...but that shit hurts and I'm not kidding," she laughed.

They'd come up on the carnival then and she looked back at Domeki again as he said that it wasn't a frequent occurance that people cut themselves on bowstrings. That made her feel better. "Okay, what do you think...should you teach me to shoot moldy teddy bears or moldy stuffed dogs?" she joked, looking over at the game ahead of them and the snow-covered prizes on display behind it.

"I think you're right," Domeki agreed with a slight sigh. He had struggled with himself in order to not give into a sense of paranoia that every single event, every single happening, every single item was all carefully staged and planned by whoever had brought them here - but there was only so long that you could blind yourself to the logic that was directly in front of you. Even if there was nothing he could do for the less pleasant parts of being stuck in this cage, he could at least be glad that he was able to communicate well with the other captives. "Even so, I almost wish that there were a way to throw off their variables and to ruin their little study. I know that it's probably just the futile wish of those who have no power but it'd be nice to think that there was something we could do to make things a bit more difficult for them." He paused to laugh and shook his head. "I suppose I should wish for a pony and world peace while I'm at it, hm?"

"I'd be honored for you to show me your LA - and that you would be willing to go back there especially for me. Perhaps, when the time comes, you can take me to New York City, as well? I have the feeling that it isn't a place for a little brother to go alone," he joked lightly and offered her a slight grin. Even if it was just playing at a fantasy, he found that it was actually rather nice to think of a future time when they would not be trapped within this glass cage. "I'd be glad to show you Japan - Tokyo, where I am from, and anywhere else you'd like."

"Oh, I believe you that it hurts," Domeki nodded gravely. "It makes me feel fortunate that I was born male and so I might never have to know the deep pain of breaking a nail." He broke into a slight grin. "Though, honestly, I do believe you that it must hurt. I can't imagine a woman carrying on about it otherwise."

Domeki took a long moment to study both the stuffed teddy bears and the stuffed dogs - but he couldn't see a difference in size or in thickness that would make all that much difference. Shrugging slightly, he turned a light smirk to her. "It depends - do you like dogs or bears better?"

While Shannon understood Domeki's stance on wanting to ruin the experiments being done, she disagreed wholeheartedly. Something about the deliberance of everything in this place made her so uncomfortable and she couldn't help thinking that if the captives found a way to mess things up for the people running the show, those people would make sure the captives regretted doing so. She didn't say as much, though. "Ah world peace...favored answer of beauty queens throughout the world when asked for the one thing that they'd want," she joked back. "Should we look around the thrift shop to see if we can find you a tiara while we're wishing for things?" she teased.

Her LA, he'd called it. If only. "Yeah, I get the feeling that New York isn't a place for anybody to go alone, but maybe that's just an unwarranted bad wrap it's built up over the years. I'm sure that the crime rates aren't any higher there than in Los Angeles, honestly, but LA is where all the beautiful people in show business live, so I think that overrides the whole violence thing, by default. Ridiculous, but probably true," she replied. "Tokyo? Cool. I'm not gonna pretend I know where that is, or anything, but I have heard of it. Is it the capitol city or something? I vaguely know where Hiroshima and Nagasaki are, but only from history class," she added, looking a little sheepish as she thought of the fact that she only knew of cities in his country that her country had dropped bombs into. That was sort of embarrassing, actually...

"You are so cruisin' for a bruisin' bub," Shannon said with a smirk, wrinkling her nose at the way he kept on teasing about the broken nails. Men would never understand, she supposed; not even Domeki. "Hurts the most if your nails are strong - which mine are - and it breaks really low to the skin. And usually we don't carry on as much as men like to think we do. It's kind of rich that guys pick on us about breaking nails, which actually hurts, when they act all big and bad until they've got a cold or something and then they act like they're dying. I think both sexes have their weaknesses," she pointed out with a grin.

The reality of the situation - that she was trying to decide between dogs and bears to shoot with a bow and arrow - struck Shannon as pretty funny and so, predictably, she laughed. "Uh, which do I like better in general or which would I prefer to shoot in the face?" she joked. "I don't care; whatever. They're all gross and I can't see anyone wanting them at this point, anyway, so I don't think it's gonna matter which ones we damage."

"I think being a beauty queen would be more in your area of expertise," Domeki mused as he tipped his head on side. He allowed the topic of wishing to sabotage the results of the experiment to fall to the wayside since it was fairly easy to understand that actively trying to ruin them would be both a bit too difficult and a bit too dangerous; though he hadn't been part of any of the truly dangerous experiments, he could easily recognize the many ways in which the one in which he had taken part could have gone much worse. "I wouldn't be all that surprised to find a tiara in the thrift store but actually finding a suitable dress could be a bit more difficult - unless you want to use that dress from the other day"

"I've heard that about New York, but I was never sure how much of it was true and how much of it was just national bias. Still, I think I'd like to see it - if just because it sounds like such a busy and exciting place. Though seeing LA for all of the beautiful people and the show business sounds good too," he agreed. As bad as it might sound, Domeki wasn't all that surprised that she didn't know many cities in Japan but it seemed only fair - he really didn't know many American cities, aside from the ones which everyone seemed to know. "You're right. Tokyo is the capitol city and it's where a lot of the big business happens. It's - well, I suppose it can be compared to New York. It has a bit of a reputation but it's where most of the major events happen."

"You're right. Both men and women have their weaknesses and I can see how breaking a nail would be very painful," he agreed with all seriousness. The seriousness couldn't last all that long and he grinned at her description of how men tended to act when sick. "Does that mean that I can't count on my big sister to take care of me if I get sick?"

"Which would would you like to shoot in the face, preferably, but you're right - it really doesn't matter." Domeki nodded and, after a moment's thought, he decided to use the bears since they seemed to offer a slightly larger target. Figuring that it would be a good starting point, he set the stuffed animal on the platform which had once held the trio of cups meant to be knocked over. "Does that look like a fair distance to you? You should be able to hit that from here."

Shannon grinned. "Are you saying you think I'm pretty?" she teased, nudging his shoulder with her own. Rolling her eyes playfully at the mention of the dress from the other day, Shannon shook her head. "I don't think it's really your color, babe," she replied in a deadpan that the amusement in her eyes and the smirk on her lips easily betrayed. "And I'm still convinced you're the beauty queen, asking for world peace, geez," she laughed, winking.

National bias...hmm. Shannon hadn't ever really thought of that, but now that he mentioned it, she wondered if America had a bit of a national bias against Japan. She supposed at least some Americans probably did; some probably still held a grudge over Pearl Harbor, never mind the fact that they'd bombed the everlivin' out of the Japanese in retaliation.

Her mind wandered slightly to a story she remembered reading back in elementary school. Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. Sadako had lived in Hiroshima, or maybe Nagasaki, during the war and had ended up with cancer from the radiation of the bombs America had dropped; she'd tried to make one thousand origami cranes because a legend said that if she did, she would be cured. The little girl had died before finishing the bunch and Shannon remembered being so upset by the story that she'd cried. Yeah, there was Pearl Harbor...but there hadn't been any little girls on those ships.

She missed most of what Domeki had said, actually, in her reminiscing and caught the end bit about show business and Tokyo being the capitol city with big business. Sounded a bit like Silicon Valley, she thought, but didn't say. "Oh, yeah, okay," she replied, nodding. She was loathe to admit she'd stopped listening to him in favor of being pensive.

When Domeki's voice went serious as he seemed to agree with her, she lifted her head away from his to look over at him. But, when his serious expression melted into a grin and he asked about her taking care of him when he was sick, Shannon laughed. "Oh, I suppose it's more of an obligation than anything else," she sighed with playful theatrics in her voice. Then she grinned. "Of course I'd take care of you if you needed me to. I'd expect the same from you," she pointed out. Why she expected such so soon in their friendship, she wasn't sure, but it felt the way it felt and she didn't see any reason not to share it with him.

Shannon opened her mouth to tell Domeki that she really couldn't care less which animal she used as a target, but he beat her to the punch in saying that it really didn't matter. She watched as he set up one of the stuffed bears on a platform an she shrugged in response to his question. "I don't know how far an arrow shoots, sweetie, you tell me," she laughed. But if he thought it was a good distance, she'd take his word for it without question. Not to mention, she was excited to get down to it and give it a go before she got too cold to feel the rest of her body; her fingers were already completely numb.

"You're the prettiest big sister ever," Domeki responded with just the slightest of eye rolls but he was grinning all the same. It seemed an obvious enough statement, anyway - Shannon really did seem to uphold what most people would call beautiful. "I'm not sure that dress is anyone's color," he snickered slightly and shook his head. He felt quite sure that no one would be sad to see the last of that particular garment, even if he also was quite sure that he wouldn't allow his big sister to forget about it entirely just yet. "Hm? Is there a better, non-beauty queen response to give when it comes to wishes?"

He seemed to only vaguely register that Shannon seemed to be quite far away when he spoke on about his homeland - but that was because he was walking the halls of memory, himself. It was easy enough to prattle on about Tokyo and to give the brief tourist snippets but Domeki found himself really missing the more basic things: the early morning walks to school with Watanuki, lunch outside on the grass with Kunogi, the meetings of the archery club or the student council, evenings at the shop either eating or drinking the night away - all of them seemed so routine and so day-to-day but those were the things that stung the most when he allowed his mind to wander. It really did hurt him to think that he might never be able to see those people and to do those things again.

"I suppose if you're obligated to take care of me then I must be obligated to take care of you," he sighed but his sigh rather quickly turned into a bit of a laugh. Really, he had no issues at all with being the one to take care of Shannon if she was sick or injured - in fact, he would likely insist on it quite forcefully. "It would be nice if it never came to that, though."

"It looks fair enough to me - I don't think you'll have problems hitting that from here and we can adjust as we go along," he nodded. Realizing that the lessons were best done before his fingers got too numb to be able to notch an arrow, he moved easily into a starting position - standing at a slight angle to his target with his dominant hand holding the bow and facing the target. "The best way to stand, if you can manage, is with your toes to the arrow shaft and your feet shoulder width apart. Take step back with your front foot about five to ten inches - but you can adjust this to whatever feels most comfortable to you. Once you're in a comfortable stance, you can nock an arrow in the center of the bowstring and let the shaft of the arrow rest against the bow, just above the handgrip." He moved to demonstrate this, holding the bow so that she could see what he was currently doing. "Now, hold the string with your first three fingers and it should settle in the crease of your last joint, with the nock of the arrow between your middle and index fingers - use your thumb to stabilize the arrow like this. Hold the bow with the 'V' formed by your index finger and thumb and keep your arm locked straight, with your elbow rolled slightly out. Now, you can lift your head to find your target and raise your bow arm, keeping it in a locked position. Draw the string back until your thumb is against jawbone and your index finger is almost touching the corner of your mouth but make sure you use your shoulder and back muscles to pull the string. Take a moment to aim - some find that it helps to visualize a line between yourself and your target but if the target is moving then it helps to lead it a bit - and take a breath, holding it until you release the arrow."

The movements were so practiced and so ingrained to him that Domeki found himself having to slow down what he was doing to make sure that Shannon could see just how he was holding his hands and just how he was performing each act. As it always had been, performing with the bow was almost a sort of meditation for him and it calmed him to have a moment to practice - even with the cold and the snow all about them. He seemed hardly surprised at all when the arrow struck home in the soft plush of the bear but he knew there was a bit more to the lesson yet. "Now, relax your fingers from the wrist forward and just let the string slide from your fingers - which would be easier if we had gloves but I couldn't find any archery gloves in the thrift store."

Rolling her eyes right along with him, Shannon shook her head at Domeki. "Ass kissing will get you everywhere, my Heroic Poet," she teased. With an airy huff of laughter, Shannon nodded. "That's no fucking joke," she replied. "That thing was awful! And no, that's probably the best beauty queen response of all time. And the most predictable and overused, but who's counting?" she joked, jabbing him gently in the ribs with her elbow.

Shannon rather enjoyed the dynamic she had with Domeki. She couldn't say that she ever considered their conversations flirtatious, but because they reminded her of the ones she'd had with Boone before everything went wrong, she couldn't discount it entirely either. But, the fact of the matter was that no matter how they talked to one another, there was a silent understanding there. There was no expectation on his part and none on hers. They just...were. While they both jested about feeling obligated to take care of one another should the other need it, Shannon knew somehow that Domeki felt just the same as she did: it wasn't an obligation and it wasn't an option; they just would. "Yeah, really, I'm on board with that for sure," she replied.

Everything Domeki was saying when he was trying to teach her went in one ear and confused the shit out of her before coming out the other. She blinked back at him even as she tried to imitate his stance and then looked back at him. "...can't you just, like, come up behind me and do it with me and talk me through it as we go the first time so I get the feel of it? Because, no offense, but that was a mouthful, mon frère, and I...have no idea what you just said," she admitted, laughing.

"Well, at least now I know how to get anything I want from my big sister," Domeki mused with a pensive expression. Not that he could really think of anything he'd want to try to get from Shannon that she probably wouldn't give willingly but it rather seemed that it was the place of the little brother to try to wring as much as possible out of the older sibling. "Hm. I guess I'll have to try to think of something new and creative if I really want to be Miss Vas Captio, then," he joked in turn as he made a failed attempt to sidestep her gentle jab.

"That would probably be the best way to do it - as long as you don't mind if I stand behind you and manipulate your arms?" He offered her a questioning glance as he moved to remove the arrow from the body of the plush animal. It wasn't too hard for him to be able to figure out that his instructions had probably been confusing and so he was eager to clear things up. "I promise it won't be so bad once you see it done a few times."

Once again, Shannon smirked and playfully rolled her eyes. "Not that you'd have to work real hard to get anything from me unless it was ridiculously unreasonable anyway," she pointed out. "Yeah mull that over for a little bit, because you're gonna need to be more original if you wanna cinch the title," she teased. Just the idea of connecting Domeki's face to the thought of a Miss Vas Captio made her laugh.

Shannon shook her head. "No, that's fine, sweetie, because if you don't do it that way, I'm never gonna get it," she replied apologetically. "I'm sure I'll understand if you're saying it as I'm doing it so it's not so much to take in all at one time." It wasn't that Shannon wasn't quick or intelligent, but it was a lot of foreign information to absorb in one go.

Domeki decided that he would take some time to mull over just what could win him the coveted title of Miss Vas Captio - or he simply saw the fact that it was probably better to get a bit more serious about the lessons at hand. Not that he could entirely resist a laugh at the idea of the captives of this place setting aside all their differences to have a beauty pageant.

"It was just too much information too quickly," he agreed. Coming to stand behind her, he gently guided her into the right stance with her feet about shoulder width apart and one foot slightly behind the other. Once he was satisfied with her stance, he reached around to press the bow into her hand and he was careful to guide her fingers into the proper grip. Into the other hand, he put the arrow which he had just pulled from the plush and he helped her to properly nock it. "Okay. This is the best way to stand and the best way to hold the bow and arrow - is it comfortable enough for you?"

It felt admittedly a little strange to have Domeki coming up behind her, touching her the way he was to move her the way she needed to be moved. It was the sort of thing she saw in the movies between two love interests that didn't realize that they had feelings for one another. So, considering the fact that she knew this was all business, it was unsettling for her mind to go in that direction. Still, she let Domeki guide her into the proper stance and into holding the bow.

She turned her head just slightly to look back at him when he spoke. "Uh, yeah, I mean, it's awkward, but I think that's just because I don't know what I'm doing and I've got a Heroic Poet wrapped around me trying to show me," she replied honestly, a small grin tugging at her lips. Shaking her head, she pulled her focus and looked back at the way she was holding the bow. Then her eyes drifted downward to take in exactly how she was standing. "Okay, can you let go and have me see if I can do it by myself? Before we actually start shooting at stuff? Just to make sure?" she asked, looking back over her shoulder at him. Shannon had to learn things in small steps in order to really and truly absorb them - and this, she wanted to really and truly absorb.

Domeki was not entirely unaware of the slight awkwardness of being given permission to move and to touch the body of an attractive woman - but he had already come to the point of thinking of Shannon as family and this thought helped to alleviate a bit of the lingering strangeness. Beside that, there was also the fact that he had attempted to teach a few of his contemporaries to use a bow and arrow - with varying degrees of success.

"Here. Let's see if it comes any easier if I step back a bit," he offered. He did take more than a few steps back from Shannon and he considered her stance for a long moment before nodding his approval. She did seem to have the basics down quite well, but it would also likely be a bit more difficult when she had to perform them on her own. "Alright, go ahead. Let me see if you can hit the ready stance on your own and I'll let you know if anything needs to be adjusted."

Nodding to herself, Shannon moved out of the position Domeki had so carefully put her in and she let her grip on the bow fall slack as she lowered her arms. Shannon took a deep breath and tried to focus so that she would remember what Domeki had shown her and then she moved into what she was pretty sure was the proper stance, looking back at him with raised eyebrows as if to ask, how'm I doing so far?

Shannon paused, then, and lifted the bow again, trying to position it in her hands the way he'd had it. It was awkward, but she thought maybe she'd managed to repeat the move, including having guided the arrow into its proper spot. The only problem was, the arrow was wobbling in place, so she knew something was wrong about her positioning. "Help?" she laughed looking back at him again.

Domeki stood back to give her enough room to be able to move as freely as she might like. He knew that Shannon was an intelligent woman and he felt that she probably wouldn't have much trouble perfecting the stance - but he also remembered that it had taken him quite a few tries before he had gotten everything correct. Not that perfection was needed for what Shannon had in mind but he felt that it might take more than just this one lesson for her to get all of it down. He did nod approval to her stance when she glanced back to him and he even raised one hand in the universal sign for 'okay'.

"It's alright. That's tricky," he laughed a little as he watched her fumble slightly with the arrow. Moving back to standing behind her, he studied her hands for a moment before seeing the problem. "Oh, I see. It works better if you hold the arrow with these fingers and stabilize it with your thumb - see how much better that feels?"

Huh. Universal gesticulations really were just that. Domeki gave her a sign to let her know that as it went, so far, so good. Her stance was correct and that was a step in the right direction. She wasn't sure how long she could stand here in the snow even as it kept coming down. Her feet were burning with cold and her fingers and nose were numb. But, she'd asked for the lesson and he'd been good enough to acquiesce, so she'd hang in there for now and do her best to get it right as quickly as possible.

Domeki stepped up behind her again and adjusted her hold, asking if that felt better and she smiled. "Yeah, thanks," she replied, because it did. It somehow felt more natural than the awkward hold she'd had before and it made her feel much better that, rather than getting annoyed or frustrated with her, Domeki had laughed along and told her that it was tricky. So then, maybe she wasn't a huge failure.

Shannon relaxed her grip and lowered the bow again before raising it back up on her own a second time, trying to recreate the hand position that he'd shown her twice over. This time, she must've gotten it, because the arrow held still. Once again, she looked over her shoulder at him with arched eyebrows, silently asking for approval.

Domeki was doing his best to ignore the bite of the cold air around him but he knew that he really couldn't keep Shannon out in the snow too much longer without taking the risk of her catching cold - and he didn't want to be the one to have to explain to his big sister's various protectors why she had suddenly and unexpectedly come down sick, beyond the problem of avoiding admitting that he had been giving her archery lessons.

Putting these thoughts aside, he watched as she renewed her hold and he found himself nodding approval for how quickly she had managed to catch on. Of course, there was a good chance that Shannon would find all of this much easier when her fingers weren't cold and numb but they really just had to make do with whatever this place happened to give them.

"That looks good," he nodded when she glanced at him for approval. He took a brief moment to walk up behind her again so that he could have a better look but he saw nothing which seemed to need any sort of correction. "Why don't you try taking position one more time and then we'll see about having you actually shoot the arrow?"

With a nod, Shannon let herself step out of proper positioning again as well as letting her grip on the bow and the arrow go slack. "Okay, how about you shoot the arrow with me...then let me try it by myself...and then we call it a day for now?" she asked, shivering and teeth chattering against her will. "Because I'm freezing my butt off right now," she finally admitted a little more than grudgingly.

At that, Shannon put herself back into the proper stance and brought up the bow, positioning the arrow. She waited, then, for Domeki to come up behind her again and help her shoot the arrow so that she could get the feel of how to do so the right way before she ended up doing something stupid that would break something or shoot at the wrong thing because she didn't know what she was doing.

"That sounds like a good idea," Domeki agreed readily. There was just the briefest moment of guilt for forcing Shannon to practice in such an unpleasant environment but it dispelled easily enough when he remembered that there really wasn't any to help what was essentially beyond anyone's control. "It should only be a few more minutes and then you can go back to the warmth of the museum."

Again, he watched her as she took stance and he again nodded his approval - if nothing else, she seemed to have that much down pat. Once he was sure that she was secure in her stance, he moved up behind her and he reached to position his hands over her own - both the one on the bow and the one holding the arrow. Gently but firmly, he drew back their hands until her thumb was against her jawbone. "Remember that the best way to pull back the string is to use the muscles of your shoulders and back," he murmured quietly as he made a small adjustment to her aim. "Now, take and hold a breath - then release the breath and the arrow at the same time."

"And you th-th-th-the thrift sh-shop," she pointed out, teeth chattering, as a cold chill ran through her body and she shuddered against it reflexively. Suck it up, Shan. You wanted to learn, so suck it up and learn, she told herself and took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. If Domeki could stand the cold to teach her, she could stand the cold to learn, dammit, and she would.

When Domeki came up behind her again, she almost lost herself in his body heat. His hands closed over hers and even that was perhaps more welcome that it normally would've been, because she was so fucking cold. But she forced herself to focus when Domeki pulled back the arrow, because he was talking again as he did it. "Shoulders and back, okay," she replied, reflectively listening. She tried to take in what exactly it was he was doing when he adjusted the aim; how he was moving and where, as well as why, but it was a bit lost on her since the cold was starting to become more of a distraction than she'd like to admit.

On his command, Shannon took a breath and held it, staring down the teddy bear like it was an enemy. Then came the mental superimposing of John Locke's face on the thing. He'd lied to Jack and his lie resulted in Boone's death. She had the chance to avenge Boone and Sayid had robbed her of it. Metaphorically, this was her chance and she released the arrow as she exhaled through gritted teeth and a set jaw. Whatever Domeki had done to line up the shot had worked and it hit the bear square in its tummy before the toy fell backward over the counter on which it was sitting and out of sight.

"Mm," was his non-committal response to her comment about him returning to the thrift shop. He did intend to return there - but he was currently thinking that he might take a small side trip to see if any of the deer in the forest might be willing to give up a bit more of their meat for the town. After all, the variety of meats from the other day could only last so long and he hated the thought of any of them going hungry when there was good meat so close in reach.

When it came time to release the arrow, he pulled his hands from over her own so that Shannon could be the one to shoot and he was rather proud when he noticed that the arrow struck the plush rather squarely. "Nice job!" He exclaimed as he moved past her in order to retrieve the arrow from the body of her victim. Ducking down to pick it up, he continued. "You did really well for your first lesson but it really wouldn't hurt you to practice. If you want, I'll be glad to come with you again, but you don't have to make a decision on that just yet."

"In fact, the best thing you can do is go curl up someplace warm." Domeki glanced pensively at stuffed toy with a gaping wound in its belly for a moment before holding it up for Shannon to see. "You want to take this along as a prize? I think you earned it."

Teeth still chattering, Shannon smiled brightly at Domeki's praise. As far as she was concerned, he'd really done all the work and all she'd had to do was let go, but she wasn't going to say as much. It was kind of nice to feel like someone was proud of her. Even if it was for something so simple as having let go and held still so as not to fuck up the aim that he had made. "Sounds like a plan," she agreed. "Of course I want you to come with me!" Why wouldn't I...?

She watched as he held up the stuffed bear and she shook her head. "That thing is so--" she paused to take in a shuddering breath and shivered. "--gross, Domeki," she laughed. "It's all moldy. That'd be bad for my asthma anyway," she pointed out, but smiled gratefully at his having been thoughtful. "Let's go back?" she asked, hugging herself hard with one hand and holding the bow out to him with the other.

"Just let me know when you'd like to have another practice." Domeki nodded. He found that he was pleased - both with the promise that Shannon had shown in this one practice and with the fact that she was willing to keep at it. The hope that she would never be forced to use this particular skill was still there but it did help to know that his big sister would have some means of protecting herself should she ever need it. He grinned slightly as he wrapped his arms around himself for warmth. "Hopefully, next time, it won't be quite as cold and unpleasant as this."

"Somehow, I thought you'd say that," he laughed and tossed the pierced plush back to the pile with the rest of the assorted mildewy stuffed animals. Walking back to join her, he accepted the bow and offered her a curious glance. "Do you want me to walk back with you?"

With a small smile, Shannon nodded. "Just as soon as the weather isn't so ridiculous," she replied. While Shannon was eager to learn to defend herself in such a fucked up place, she wasn't sure how effective continued lessons in the currently inclement weather would be. In fact, she wasn't sure how well her muscle memory would work during the next lesson as it was, considering she couldn't feel any of her extremities.

"I think we should wait until it's not. Being distracted by numb fingers and a nasty chill probably isn't super conducive to learning, I'd wager," she added with a roll of her eyes even if the smile stayed in place.

"Uh, if you wanted to, I'd like it, but...if you've got somewhere else you need to be, I'll be okay," Shannon replied. "It's light out, now," she added to ease his mind a little, should he want to go but felt obligated to take her back.

"With the way the weather has been changing, I imagine it might be sunny and warm tomorrow," Domeki agreed. Not that he wasn't willing to go out in just about any weather to help his big sister but he knew that it was much easier to both learn and to teach when you didn't have to worry about fingers going numb. "Even if not, there really isn't any hurry. I...get the feeling that we'll have more than enough time for you to learn all I can teach about archery."

The thought of being trapped in this place for an indeterminate time did manage to turn his mind away from the horrible cold but it really wasn't any more pleasant. Shaking his head slightly, he offered Shannon a light grin. "I suppose it depends on how irritating you want your little brother to be - if you want him to seem like he's checking up on the boys she's been hanging around."

As much as Shannon hated to admit that Domeki was probably right about having probably all the time in the world to teach her archery, she nodded. She was pretty sure it was true. "Well, if it gets all warm and sunny tomorrow we're all running the risk of getting sick while our bodies try to adjust, so, here's hoping you're wrong about that." She didn't even want to think how badly impaired everyone's immune systems were going to be to begin with, especially those that had been stuck in the glass cage longer. For lack of nutrition and an abundance of shitty weather, so far as Shannon could see, they were all pretty fucked.

A small smile spread over Shannon's lips at Domeki's comment about checking up on the other museum dwellers and she wrapped an arm around her, resting her head against his again and taking comfort in his body heat as she started to walk. "You're more than welcome to; they're all really nice guys," she replied. "I just don't wanna hold you up so that you can't get back into the thrift shop after dropping me off or anything," she pointed out, as the snow was still falling heavily all around them.

Domeki simply nodded to her comment that they would all likely get sick if the weather changed suddenly again tomorrow but the non-answer was mostly due to the fact that he didn't want to speak his own thought - the one that said the powers in charge of this place probably intended to test them with the weather, to see whose immune system was weak and whose was strong. If they were in a survival of the fittest situation, then it probably came naturally that their stamina would be tested on top of everything else - and how else could the capricious weather be explained?

"I believe it. They'd have to be for my big sister to be interested in them," he agreed. He mirrored her small smile as he once again wrapped his arm around her back; the sharing of what little body heat they had between them really was rather nice. To her latter comment, he lifted one shoulder in something of a shrug but he did know that she was likely right. "I can walk part of the way, then. I think there's still a bit of time before the door would be entirely blocked."

That's so far from the truth, it'd probably make you sick to your stomach, actually, Shannon thought to herself but did not say out loud. What Domeki didn't know about the company she would normally choose to keep wouldn't hurt him. Or her. She didn't normally keep such savory company; people like Sam and the Doctor, she never would've even looked at twice much less saught them out the way she had here. Even Domeki himself, she never would've given the time of day back in the real world. But Shannon supposed that didn't matter now, because this wasn't the real world and she did enjoy the company that she kept. Lesson learned, perhaps. Just like with Sayid.

"Sounds like a plan," Shannon agreed as the two of them started walking. She liked the comfort zone that she had built with Domeki and when she thought about it, it was almost funny that she'd become so close with some kid who just hadn't had the heart to leave her alone when she was having an asthma attack. Funny how things worked out, sometimes, she supposed. The museum was looming in front of them before long and she gave Domeki a sideways half-hug. "You better hurry before you get snowed out," she laughed. "It's really coming down..." She paused and then offered him a smile. "As soon as the weather's better, we have to do this again, okay?"

Though the weather was quite unfortunate, Domeki had found this outing with Shannon to be so pleasant that he was almost sorry to see the museum looming ahead. He knew that the situation allowed for many other mornings like this but what he couldn't know was how many of the mornings they'd actually feel up to going out and training. If those in charge of this place had their way, then Domeki wouldn't be surprised to find that most of the more favorable and pleasant activities would become impossible - or that there would be no time for them due to all the chaos.

"I'll head back now," he agreed with a small nod. He returned the sideways half-hug and offered her a light grin - but he still wasn't sure how directly he'd return to the thrift store. Even with the cold and the snow, it did seem a fine morning for a bit of hunting. "I'll be looking forward to doing this with you again - just with slightly better weather. Though you had better get inside before you really do freeze."

He offered her another slight wave before turning to go on his way.

With a nod back, Shannon smiled. "The sooner this crappy weather is done, the better. I'm not used to this and it makes for really shitty training conditions, right?" she asked with a smirk. "I'm looking forward to it, too. Thanks again, sweetie," she replied.

Returning his wave, Shannon hugged herself tight and waited, already flipping through the journal, until Domeki was out of sight and then she made her way inside again, closing the door behind her.
