Day Seven - Early Morning
Who: Shannon Rutherford & Shizuka Domeki
What: Early morning practice
When: Asscrack of dawn
Where: Initially the museum, then the carnival probably
Rating: PG- something or other (but probably no more than 13)
Status: Complete

The snow already beginning to press against the door of the thrift shop made it a bit difficult to leave and the snow already beginning to accumulate on the streets and walks of the town made the trek to the museum something slow and labored. Domeki, figuring that it would take him a while to make the hike across town, had chosen to leave before it had even begun to get light outside and it proved to be a wise choice - aside from the fact that he found himself already chilled nearly to the bone by the time he paused before the large door leading into the museum.

Domeki flexed the bare and numb fingers of his hands as he debated whether or not to knock. He knew that knocking was, essentially, the only way he could let Shannon know that he had arrived but there was an equal chance that he might awaken one of the gentlemen currently staying with her - and then he might have to explain what he wanted with his big sister at this hour and also why he was currently carrying a bow.

After a moment of silent debate, he finally raised his hand and rapped his numb knuckles against the wood of the door. He could only hope that, should Shannon not be the one to answer, whoever did liked early morning knock knock jokes.

"And you th-th-th-the thrift sh-shop," she pointed out, teeth chattering, as a cold chill ran through her body and she shuddered against it reflexively. Suck it up, Shan. You wanted to learn, so suck it up and learn, she told herself and took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. If Domeki could stand the cold to teach her, she could stand the cold to learn, dammit, and she would.

When Domeki came up behind her again, she almost lost herself in his body heat. His hands closed over hers and even that was perhaps more welcome that it normally would've been, because she was so fucking cold. But she forced herself to focus when Domeki pulled back the arrow, because he was talking again as he did it. "Shoulders and back, okay," she replied, reflectively listening. She tried to take in what exactly it was he was doing when he adjusted the aim; how he was moving and where, as well as why, but it was a bit lost on her since the cold was starting to become more of a distraction than she'd like to admit.

On his command, Shannon took a breath and held it, staring down the teddy bear like it was an enemy. Then came the mental superimposing of John Locke's face on the thing. He'd lied to Jack and his lie resulted in Boone's death. She had the chance to avenge Boone and Sayid had robbed her of it. Metaphorically, this was her chance and she released the arrow as she exhaled through gritted teeth and a set jaw. Whatever Domeki had done to line up the shot had worked and it hit the bear square in its tummy before the toy fell backward over the counter on which it was sitting and out of sight.

"Mm," was his non-committal response to her comment about him returning to the thrift shop. He did intend to return there - but he was currently thinking that he might take a small side trip to see if any of the deer in the forest might be willing to give up a bit more of their meat for the town. After all, the variety of meats from the other day could only last so long and he hated the thought of any of them going hungry when there was good meat so close in reach.

When it came time to release the arrow, he pulled his hands from over her own so that Shannon could be the one to shoot and he was rather proud when he noticed that the arrow struck the plush rather squarely. "Nice job!" He exclaimed as he moved past her in order to retrieve the arrow from the body of her victim. Ducking down to pick it up, he continued. "You did really well for your first lesson but it really wouldn't hurt you to practice. If you want, I'll be glad to come with you again, but you don't have to make a decision on that just yet."

"In fact, the best thing you can do is go curl up someplace warm." Domeki glanced pensively at stuffed toy with a gaping wound in its belly for a moment before holding it up for Shannon to see. "You want to take this along as a prize? I think you earned it."

Teeth still chattering, Shannon smiled brightly at Domeki's praise. As far as she was concerned, he'd really done all the work and all she'd had to do was let go, but she wasn't going to say as much. It was kind of nice to feel like someone was proud of her. Even if it was for something so simple as having let go and held still so as not to fuck up the aim that he had made. "Sounds like a plan," she agreed. "Of course I want you to come with me!" Why wouldn't I...?

She watched as he held up the stuffed bear and she shook her head. "That thing is so--" she paused to take in a shuddering breath and shivered. "--gross, Domeki," she laughed. "It's all moldy. That'd be bad for my asthma anyway," she pointed out, but smiled gratefully at his having been thoughtful. "Let's go back?" she asked, hugging herself hard with one hand and holding the bow out to him with the other.

"Just let me know when you'd like to have another practice." Domeki nodded. He found that he was pleased - both with the promise that Shannon had shown in this one practice and with the fact that she was willing to keep at it. The hope that she would never be forced to use this particular skill was still there but it did help to know that his big sister would have some means of protecting herself should she ever need it. He grinned slightly as he wrapped his arms around himself for warmth. "Hopefully, next time, it won't be quite as cold and unpleasant as this."

"Somehow, I thought you'd say that," he laughed and tossed the pierced plush back to the pile with the rest of the assorted mildewy stuffed animals. Walking back to join her, he accepted the bow and offered her a curious glance. "Do you want me to walk back with you?"

With a small smile, Shannon nodded. "Just as soon as the weather isn't so ridiculous," she replied. While Shannon was eager to learn to defend herself in such a fucked up place, she wasn't sure how effective continued lessons in the currently inclement weather would be. In fact, she wasn't sure how well her muscle memory would work during the next lesson as it was, considering she couldn't feel any of her extremities.

"I think we should wait until it's not. Being distracted by numb fingers and a nasty chill probably isn't super conducive to learning, I'd wager," she added with a roll of her eyes even if the smile stayed in place.

"Uh, if you wanted to, I'd like it, but...if you've got somewhere else you need to be, I'll be okay," Shannon replied. "It's light out, now," she added to ease his mind a little, should he want to go but felt obligated to take her back.

"With the way the weather has been changing, I imagine it might be sunny and warm tomorrow," Domeki agreed. Not that he wasn't willing to go out in just about any weather to help his big sister but he knew that it was much easier to both learn and to teach when you didn't have to worry about fingers going numb. "Even if not, there really isn't any hurry. I...get the feeling that we'll have more than enough time for you to learn all I can teach about archery."

The thought of being trapped in this place for an indeterminate time did manage to turn his mind away from the horrible cold but it really wasn't any more pleasant. Shaking his head slightly, he offered Shannon a light grin. "I suppose it depends on how irritating you want your little brother to be - if you want him to seem like he's checking up on the boys she's been hanging around."
