Day Seven - Early Morning
Who: Shannon Rutherford & Shizuka Domeki
What: Early morning practice
When: Asscrack of dawn
Where: Initially the museum, then the carnival probably
Rating: PG- something or other (but probably no more than 13)
Status: Complete

The snow already beginning to press against the door of the thrift shop made it a bit difficult to leave and the snow already beginning to accumulate on the streets and walks of the town made the trek to the museum something slow and labored. Domeki, figuring that it would take him a while to make the hike across town, had chosen to leave before it had even begun to get light outside and it proved to be a wise choice - aside from the fact that he found himself already chilled nearly to the bone by the time he paused before the large door leading into the museum.

Domeki flexed the bare and numb fingers of his hands as he debated whether or not to knock. He knew that knocking was, essentially, the only way he could let Shannon know that he had arrived but there was an equal chance that he might awaken one of the gentlemen currently staying with her - and then he might have to explain what he wanted with his big sister at this hour and also why he was currently carrying a bow.

After a moment of silent debate, he finally raised his hand and rapped his numb knuckles against the wood of the door. He could only hope that, should Shannon not be the one to answer, whoever did liked early morning knock knock jokes.

Shannon, too, hugged herself against the cold. The Island had sucked in its own way, but the weather here was ridiculously uncomfortable. She found herself secretly hoping that the temperature would rise as drastically and quickly as it had fallen...and soon. "Guess so," she said, reaching over and tousling his hair just to spite him, winking and grinning as she did so. At his second comment, Shannon laughed. "Oh yes, you have much to learn, young grasshopper," she teased.

Domeki said that he thought the thrift store would be snowed in before long if the snow kept up and Shannon had to bite back another offer for him to stay with her at the museum. She hated the idea of him being stuck in there, but on the other side of the coin, at least she thought it meant that the sick fucks running this place would have a hard time getting to him. Maybe being snowed in would keep him safe for the time being. At that thought, she relaxed a little.

"Yeah, good point," she agreed when he suggested they get moving both to keep warm and at the prospect of trying to trudge through snow any deeper than it already was. She started them off, heading down the stairs and waiting at the bottom for him. The idea of hanging on him as they walked to keep warm occurred to her but it was immediately set off by the thought of how effing cold she was going to be at night, even with Sam spooning her. She was very nearly tempted to forgo Sam entirely in favor of Captain Jack and his insanely warm military jacket.

Shannon looked over at the bow, sizing it up. "Does it work? I mean, you know...considering the way they seem to think it's funny to leave us out here with nothing useful at all to defend ourselves..." she said softly, furrowing her brow slightly.

"Maybe you can start my lessons while I try to teach you about archery?" Domeki offered with the slightest of grins. Although he had never before felt all that interested in learning other languages, he did find that the idea of learning some of the more normal American slang could be useful - especially if he was going to have to spend more time in this place. It was convenient enough that other languages were apparently translated into his own but the magical means seemed to break down a little when it came to translating some of the more colorful phrases - and he almost felt as if he were missing something because of that.

It was only after he had spoken that Domeki realized that his statement about the thrift store could possibly be seen as an attempt to fish for an offer to stay with her at the museum and so he was a touch relieved when Shannon chose not to respond. Not that he wouldn't be happy to stay with her but his sense of duty - and his bond to his classmate, even if he often chose to ignore that part of it - made him feel that it was slightly more important that he make sure that Watanuki was also safe. There was also his concern for Bell to think of and the fact that anyone still in the thrift store by the afternoon would likely be in need of someone to bring them back some basic goods.

He followed her carefully down the stairs and he offered Shannon his arm almost without thinking once he had made it to her side. Not that he didn't trust her to be able to make her own way but the snow was already getting rather deep and it'd likely be easier for both of them to trudge safely through if they had someone to lean on - or to pull them along. "This has to be the worst winter weather I've ever seen. I don't think I've ever seen a snowfall this deep - it almost seems like it'll never stop."

"I practiced with it a bit last night and it deep seem to be in fairly good condition. The string is flexible and strong - I don't think you'll have any trouble with it." Domeki had been a little surprised that the bow he had found had turned out to be of the traditional type with which he was more familiar - given the way things had run here, he had expected it would be a compound bow or something quite a bit more modern. The fact that this made things easier did make him glad but he couldn't help but wonder if it was as much a gift as he had first thought. "The only real trouble is that one of the arrows is broken and I haven't found a way to patch it so that it'll still be able to fly." He frowned a bit at this but he had already decided that, should this lesson go well, he might take a chance on contacting the one who had written in the journals about being able to make basic weapons - a few new arrows would be ideal and, should she take a liking to the weapon, perhaps a basic bow for Shannon, as well.
