Legion of Super-Giffen, Prologue III
But Keith Giffen left the book.

They say it was the poster that did him in.

This poster:

Ah yes. The famous compositional style, unique to 80s DC, of people randomly standing around in the air

wonder why nobody does that anymore.

Keith Giffen, I adore Keith Giffen. His career is filled with brilliant ideas that don't work. He's tried everything. Most none of it works. BUT HE DID IT!

He was "co-plotter and designer" for issues #3-#5. That probably means he did breakdowns. He was assisted by Steve Lightle, who draws great robots and weird faces. Inked by Mahlstedt, whose work here raises the eternal question,

Legion of Super-Giffen, Prologue II
First, I would like to apologize. I am absolutely humbled by the depth of Legion knowledge that I've seen on this board. Never expected that. Ya gotta admit pre-Zero Hour LSH continuity is a little obscure at this point.

So, yeah, there are people here who know their Legion.

That said, I still don't feel like exhaustively explaining every little thing in the art below -- that's a lot of typing. Giffen's LSH is the densest storytelling this side of the Silver Age.

No, I just want us to look at the pictures right now. We'll get to the themes later.

So once again I present you with the art of Keith Giffen,

Legion of Super-Giffen; Prologue 1
LSHv3#1

Welcome to the Legion of Super-Heroes. This is the real stuff, not that watered-down second/thirdhand tripe they feed you kids these days.

You're not going to understand it. Right now, it's enough to just look at it. We'll figure it out as we go along.

Pretend you're twelve years old.

Legion of Super-Heroes Annual #1 - "Dammit."
In the Computo post down the page, [info]crinosg requested a look at pre-Crisis Duo Damsel's more seriously handled reaction to the death of her third body.

That's in Legion of Super-Heroes Annual #1, in which Brainiac 5 uses the Computo technology in an attempt to help a comatose little girl, Danielle Foccart. Results: Predictable - Computo gets loose and takes control of LOSH's all-automated headquarters, whose systems begin attacking the Legionnaires - and locking out any potential help. One page, not my scan.

Why the Legion weren't dicks ALL the time to new recruits...
After the recent example of Legiondickery here, I though we should see a slightly better example of a Legion Recruitment drive....

From 1985 Paul Levitz and Steve Lightle bring us

Steve Ditko was not at his best by 1980
Some time ago, on the old S_D, I made reference to a particularly bad panel of Steve Ditko's art on Legion of Super-Heroes, in the 80s... After mentioning it, I was asked to post the panel, but I didn't remember which issue it was in, and couldn't find it. I've since found it, so...I now post it.

It wasn't good. )
