At least she could say that this year's Valentine's Day was arguably better than last year's. This year she was alone, and mourning the loss of the love of her life, but last year she was dating a stranger, and had gotten drunk and cheated on him in the bathroom of the bar with another stranger. So yes, much better this year. But it still sucked.
She could have - and probably should have - just stayed at the B&B and drank her own there, but she'd heard somewhere that misery loves company. If nothing else, there'd be a bartender around for small talk and to make sure she didn't end up with alcohol poisoning. She smirked wryly at the thought, which was the same reason she'd gone out to a bar last Valentine's Day. At least this year she wasn't moping about an absentee boyfriend, but mourning the death of the love of her life. Marginally better.
She ordered herself a whiskey - James' favourite brand, and cradled it in both hands like a lover, taking her time with it, taking small sips and really tasting it rather than just getting drunk off it. That would come, for sure, but this wasn't a drowning-your-sorrows thing, it was an honour-the-fallen thing. She didn't think she'd ever stop loving him, but somehow, after time, she was sure she could move on. He would want that for her, she was sure. He'd want her to be happy. She smiled softly at the thought and took another sip, savouring the complex flavour and remembering a time when she'd been happy.
