Re: [The Cat: Nishka & Cat & Jack]
Nish smiled softly and nodded. "Very selfless. Too much in fact, not just to other people, but me as well." She reached forward, absently toying with the empty glass as she waited for it to be refilled. "He spent my teens and twenties tracking me down at various parties and bars and dragging me home," she said wryly. "He never learned, and neither did I."
A soft huff of laughter came with the question of her job. "I'm a defence attorney," she said, amused. "My brother and I are opposite sides of the same coin - he arrests them, and I play the system to set them free. And god does he hate that," he added with a laugh. He'd been flabbergasted when she told him about her chosen focus, trying to convince her to try for prosecutor, or literally anything else but criminal defence. But, as she'd told him then, "someone's gotta do it," she said aloud. "Everyone's entitled to a fair trial in this country, even the perps. And the amount of obviously innocent people I've helped walk away from possibly life-altering charges makes it worth it." Black men being charged by racist cops, women being charged with assault when it was self-defence, people were falsely accused for all kinds of things. She has definitely defended the whole spectrum of absolutely guilty dirtbags too, but that was part of the job.
