and my thoughts surround me like a prison wall, it's true.

Who: Christian and OPEN.
Where: Butterfly Gardens.
When: Early afternoon.

There had been an anxious knot in his stomach all day that nothing had been able to shift or chase away. The dream had worked a number on him, putting him in a state of tense unease from the first moment he’d awoken and it hadn’t eased up in the hours since. The news Michael had relayed to them all across the hotel’s network hadn’t helped, but Christian couldn’t lie and say that the arrival of three new softies at once was the primary source for his anxiety. He certainly couldn’t convince himself of that fact, not when the real reason was still working its way through his brain, creeping like poison, infecting every other thought.

Like a few choice other members of staff Christian had spent time in the hotel before accepting a position as a member of staff. A long time ago though it had been he remembered it well, at least the times when he had been sober. As he bent to pick up the ball the aptly-named mongrel dropped at his feet he tried not to remember how he’d felt in the times between fixes, when his hands had trembled so badly that he’d barely been able to function, when he’d felt on the verge of a nervous breakdown because the need was so strong. So intense. Just briefly, as he closed his fingers around the ball, his hand shook. Christian thought he might drop the ball but instead he tightened his grip around it, picked it up as he tightened his jaw in a defiant clench, and straightened, drawing in a sharp, sudden breath.

Just a dream, he told himself, turning the ball over in his hand and then rolling it to his other. Just a dream.

Rusty hopped in front of him, making breathless panting sounds, eyes bright and ears perked, his tail sweeping furiously from side to side. Waiting, just waiting, for the ball to fly again. Christian obliged, sending it out across the garden in a powerful throw, feeling the pull of the muscles in his arm and through his shoulder and back, a rewarding flash of sensation that briefly derailed the disturbing thoughts about a past he very much wanted to leave behind.

When the dog came barrelling back towards him Christian recognised immediately that Rusty was too excited, that the animal wasn’t going to be able to pull up before crashing into him, and so he did the only thing he could think to do. He stepped aside. Too late he realised there was someone else there, behind him, and that part of Rusty’s enthusiasm was their very arrival.

“You might want to brace yourself,” he told them, as Rusty whipped past him. He hadn’t had time to grab the dog by the collar. Luckily, the excited mongrel was able to judge the distance properly and managed to apply the brakes in time to stop short of slamming into the new arrival’s legs, though he did greet them by dropping a somewhat damp ball on their toes, proceeding to look up at them expectantly, as if to say Well?

i don't want your money, i don't want your crown.

Who: Regan and OPEN.
Where: Outside the hedge maze.
When: Early evening.

Regan Frost wasn’t in the business of letting silly things like dreams have any kind of effect on him but there were exceptions to every rule. For several hours after he’d awoken from one of the most uncharacteristic dreams of his entire life he had stayed in his room, smoking more than his usual amount of cigarettes, trying not to get too caught up in the whole thing. That hadn’t worked. Sitting in one place doing only one thing wasn’t very conducive when it came to distracting oneself from unwelcome thoughts and feelings, and so he’d ventured out from his room. He’d showered before doing so, and by the time he’d stepped out of the hotel and onto the grounds his hair was still damp. The warmth of the breeze coming off the desert beyond the hotel’s boundaries kept him from feeling any kind of chill, not that he would have cared. Regan wasn’t in the habit of letting little things like weather conditions keep him from what he wanted to do.

It hadn’t taken him long to realise that walking around and smoking wasn’t much better than sitting still and smoking. So he’d gone back inside. Ventured into one of the bars. Demanded a drink. No, not a glass, the whole fucking bottle, you idiot. Only then had he gone back outside, prize in hand, having already forgotten what he’d asked for. It wasn’t only he was close to the maze and opening the damn thing that he looked to see what the bartender had handed him. Whiskey. Not a bad year either.

Regan scoffed, taking no care to do so quietly or discreetly. Good years, bad years. Everyone made such a big deal out of years, especially when it came to alcohol. With a dismissive shake of his head he lifted the bottle and took a long pull from the neck. It burned on the way down, flooding his chest and stomach with a welcome warmth, so strong that it almost made his breath catch. He lifted the bottle, considering the label again. Damn. Not bad at all.

TIME UPDATE

July 12th, 2013.
Friday.

Weather Report: Brief showers in the night, but you'd never know when the sun comes up.

Staff Briefings: Weeell... about that...

Daily Events: Something very strange has is going to happen in the hotel today. When the clocks strike midnight, and July 12th begins... for twenty-four hours, anyone who sleeps - at any time - is going to have a very similar dream.

The little details and personal touches will be different in every dream, but the gist is the same. Every guest will dream about suddenly becoming a member of the hotel staff. In the dream they will feel strangely proud of their new status, and a strong desire to help the guests. Every staff member dreams about becoming a guest. For those staffers who were already a guest... yep, you guessed it. They'll dream about being one of the first people ever to become a guest, find redemption, and somehow screw it all up and become a guest again.

That by itself could be weird and unsettling enough, but that's not all. At about six AM, three separate guests wake up from their dream and... well, go soft. The hotel registers that they've gone soft, inform Michael, their rooms are emptied, and the brand new softies automatically know to go report for duty. This is worth mentioning because it's never happened before. A guest 'going soft' is usually very predictable. It takes months or years of build-up, and usually the staff knows it's coming. Two guests have never gone soft on the same day before. What's more, one of the new softies - a woman by the name of Roberta Ferry - has been a guest in the hotel for less than a year, and showed no signs whatsoever of going soft. In a place where various members of staff always have running bets about the next one to go soft, her name doesn't appear on any bet. She was a woman in her mid-twenties, and never had any problems in the hotel. No one's ever heard her say a bad word about anyone, she was always quick to join in with activities, very friendly and outgoing. It's possible that something in her dream triggered her breaking point, but unless staff members start talking about their dreams with each other and realize they all had the same dream, no one's going to put two and two together and figure that out.

TIME UPDATE

July 11th, 2013.
Thursday.

Weather Report: No changes.

Staff Briefings: None yet.

Daily Events: Apparently the hotel has decided the activities director from hell needs a subtle suggestion as to what sorts of activities the majority of the guests would really enjoy. At some point in the night the ballroom is turned into a billiards room. There's a pool table, a jukebox, a poker table, and a blackjack table. At any point in the day you can find guest and staff alike in there, gambling with whatever it is they feel is valuable in this place.

This could turn either into a very good night, or a very bad night, considering.

1 2 3 NOT IT

Who: Hayes and Jai
When: late morning
Where: security office

Jai felt like he now had the hang of this job. In a nutshell, the job was 40% protecting the guests from each other, and 60% protecting the activities director from herself. Yeah, that sounded about right. He had just entered the security office to start his shift when the radios went off. Apparently someone was chasing after the woman in the parking lot, threatening her with her own clipboard.

Again.

The guy Jai was relieving looked up and started to open his mouth, but Jai beat him to the punch. "Not it," he announced.

"The hell? Come on man, it's your turn," the other guy replied.

"Bullocks it is," Jai snorted. "I had to jump in the pool yesterday and stop that girl from drowning her." The two stared at each other for a moment, sighed, and wordlessly went into a round of Rock Paper Scissors. Jai won, rock over scissors, and grinned widely. "Off you go then," he said, taking a seat at the monitoring station and taking a long victory sip of his coffee. Yes, he was getting the hang of this job at last.

TIME UPDATE

July 10th, 2013.
Wednesday.

Weather Report: No changes.

Staff Briefings: None yet.

Daily Events: The activities director from hell must have taken it as a good sign that nobody died yesterday, because today's she's chasing after people and encouraging them to use their stay as a good time be less lazy and get healthier. Anyone who lets her get that much out is then asked to participate in 'beginner's zumba' classes in the grand ballroom. Keep im mind, her version of 'beginner's zumba' is the sort of thing most people would need an energy drink and a cow taser to get through without falling over.

Good times.

Who: Nisha and Seth
Where: Lounging by the Morning Star pool
When: Late morning

If the activities director came back around again to stand in Nisha's light and ask her why she wasn't partaking in the ridiculous water activities that would only end in tears, Nisha might just throw her drink in her face. It was one of those days where she was contented just lying there getting her Vitamin D, drinking lovely sweet icy cocktails in peace. Of course every, oh, thirty minutes - so far - the activities director came by her stretcher and asked her to come join the others. Nisha didn't want to, Nisha didn't think anybody else wanted to, and Nisha's body wasn't so much for moving at the moment. In fact, the only body part that was moving was her arm to get the drink and put it back on the table.

When Nisha saw the activities director bothering some more people who were doing the same she was, she scoffed. "Oh for fuck's sake. I mean, is her pay in proportion with how hard she tries?"

TIME UPDATE

July 9th, 2013.
Tuesday.

Weather Report: Sunny, hot, gorgeous. Normal day in the desert.

Staff Briefings: None yet.

Daily Events: The activities director from hell is at it again, trying to get people to attend pool activities in the morning star pool. Everything from pool volleyball to a Marco Polo tournament. Yeah, that's a great idea. Take a bunch of strangers with violent issues and ask them to paw at each other blindly. That's gonna go over great.

it's a compliment, really

Who: Hayes and Michael
When: Evening
Where: Morning Star

For the record, Michael had never claimed to be a nice person. That said, ever since her little meeting with Christine she'd been positively radiant with joy. Her amusement with the whole situation - and the hope that she would eventually have the very great honor of sacking the bitch - had left her in a good mood for days, and thus far, nothing had broken that good humor.

After waking up at about five in the afternoon, she'd gone through what was a morning ritual for most people. Showering, doing her hair and make-up, getting dressed (and even wearing something other than black or red for a change, which certainly contributed to the lighter appearance), and she headed out of her apartment by six. After an hour of walking the grounds, she headed over to the Morning Star Grill. She wasn't in search of breakfast, since she ate her meals in reverse. She got there along with the dinner crowd, and scanned the area for a place to sit. She smiled to herself when she saw Hayes sitting alone, and she sauntered over. "Good morning, Hayes," she said, her tone warm and cheerful. Yes, she knew it wasn't morning. Yes, she knew it was a very old, very lame joke. No, she did not care. "Mind if I join you?"

She didn't actually wait for an answer.

another day in paradise

Who: Ashling and Open!
When: Midday
Where: Poolside

Ashling had been here a few months, and she didn't complain about that. She knew she couldn't leave, and she didn't complain about that. Every Sunday she watched her father on the TV and at least once during the sermon he would ask for anyone with information about his daughter's disappearance to step forward and contact the authorities, and every week her heart broke a little more for her family, but she didn't complain about that, either. She took it in stride. She did her best to accept what she could not control and deal with it. But her wardrobe was starting to get on her nerves.

The problem was that she and her sister had been on their way to Hawaii, and Ashling had packed appropriately. Now a few months later, she was still having to dress every day like a bum on vacation. It might have been appropriate to her current climate, but it still felt strange to the born and bred Michigan girl. She sighed as she sat down in one of the poolside loungers. It was supposed to be a vacation, she thought. Well, she certainly got that one. She still held out hope that it wouldn't be permanent. So you better start relaxing. What a foreign concept. She pulled the bottle of nail polish out of her pocket and started to shake it. Relax. Sure. She could do this.
