Fandom Name: The Sentinel (Television Show)

A Brief Description: 1995/96 gave the United States a new network, and brought with it new shows. Among those was a little heard of, at the time, but soon proved to be a cult hit for the fans called 'The Sentinel'. The show is based around a police detective, Jim Ellison, who was born with the ability to heighten his senses that would manifest when he was older, when they were needed. Blair Sandburg, an Anthropology professor at a local college who has experience with Sentinel lore, becomes his friend and confidant, his Guide. Eventually, they even become partners of a sort.

The idea of a Sentinel is simple. A person would be born who would look after the tribe, be their protector. He or she, was endowed with their abilities to enhance this role. Jim, during a stint in South America while working for the U.S. government, came across a tribe of Amazonian Indians who required his assistance. This triggered his abilities the first time, and made it possible for him to rediscover them later.

Together, Jim and Blair work to learn more about Jim's nature and to master his abilities. Along the way, they put this relationship in to practice solving crimes.

Jerry's Final Thought: Jim and Blair are unique in that they are one of the first duos that didn't hide the fact they cared about one another with pithy remarks and gruff bullshit. Well, at least Blair didn't. This lead to a massive fanbase both online and in the Con circuit. What this show lacked in subtlety, it made up for in sheer pluckiness.

A Brief Description: Dr. House once was a happy man who lived in the magical world where everyone got along and was... Phtttp, that never happened. House is a brilliant doctor, but he's a lousy human being. He is the first person to admit it. He goes through people and employees like tissues. Gregory House is his name, and Diagnostics is his game.

Set up in the fake hospital of Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital, he heads the Diagnostics Department. He has group of three or more rotating fellows, whom he basically lords. His best friend is a masochistic Oncologist who isn't quite sure what his motivation is. The head of the hospital, spends most of her time being a walking hormone attached to a uterus, than being an actual doctor. His former employees, two of them at least, still work in the hospital, making it convenient for him to bother them.

Basically, you're wondering what makes this show watchable? Cue the cricket chorus. What? They're busy watching House? Don't they know that show makes absolutely no real life sense? *Sighs*

Jerry's Final Thought: Welcome to LaLa Land, where nothing makes sense, but a sudden epiphany will solve the case. The characters are yelled at, made fun of, privacy invaded, and abused in all sorts of manners, but they keep coming back. When you watch House, you're not really sure why you watch it. Sometimes, you might swear to never come back, but then something happens, and you're sucked back in. Now you know how Wilson feels.

Conceived to be a comedy, it started out a little dark. Their natures prove to be their greatest obstacle, but not by their own hand. It's hard to live for the future when your past keeps getting in the way.

Between three shows in different cities, they have covered an array of techniques in variety of crimes. Not only have the characters explained their professions, they've given us valuable insight in to the world of criminal investigation. While not every procedure followed in the shows is accurate within the real world, some poetic license is allowed to make the show compelling.

A Brief Description: One day, a Federal Marshal was escorting a prisoner back to Seattle to be with her mother. Something happens to cause him to wreck and he goes in to town for assistance. That town is Eureka, and everyone in it is basically crazy. More insane, mind blowingly so, stuff happens, and he finds himself as sheriff. His prisoner, who also happens to be his daughter, comes to stay with him. And that's just the beginning of his trouble.

Eureka is a supposedly secret town where all the top scientists in the United States go to be themselves. This causes lots of trouble because like juvenile delinquents, they have no impulse control and let their experiments run amok, frequently. Even their supposed leader, Nathan Stark, is nothing but a loose canon with an ego large enough to crush Texas. Until he dies. Then he leaves a memory large enough to crush Alaska.

Between his side kicks: Fargo, Deputy Jo, and *growls* Zane, that wacky daughter of his, and this crazy, where the fuck did she come from, sister, Jack Carter is not having a good day, thank you very much!

A Brief Description: It began with an abduction. Then for nine seasons and two movies, 'The X-Files' ran amok through science fiction and science fact. FBI Agents Mulder and Scully, off and on, uncovered a variety of experiments and paranormal activities. From a conspiracy to create alien/human hybrids that went back sixty years, to glowing green insects that sucked the moisture from living creatures, if it could be seen, it was brought to us on a weekly basis. While some remain skeptical, there were those who always wanted to believe.

A Brief Description: Thank you for being a friend. Four women from various backgrounds came together in Miami to live in one house. Past what is considered their prime, life isn't easy and they've had their fair share of hardships. Three of them are widows, and the forth was left by her husband of thirty-eight years for a stewardess less than half his age. In spite of the physical complications of growing older, they found love and laughter over seven seasons; three of them in the spin-off too. A Brief Description: 2008 saw the launch of the family-oriented new TV series based on the Arthurian legends, which departs heavily from the most commonly told myth by having a Prince Arthur in his father's court, attended by Merlin, a young warlock of Arthur's own age. Merlin must keep his magic secret because of King Uther's persecution of magic users, and protect Arthur from many evils that mean to do away with the young prince and deflect the destiny the two young men are supposed to fulfill - to bring magic back to Camelot and create the kingdom of Albion. The series indeed bears very little resemblance to the myth, but this is forgiven by fans as it does give us likable characters and flashy magics; there could be said to be something charming about it.

A Brief Description: Spanning 20 books, the novels follow the adventurous lives of Captain Jack Aubrey, Royal Navy, and Dr. Stephen Maturin. The characters were filmed in 2003 as Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (combining two novels' names but bearing little resemblance to book canon, though lauded by the books' fans). Jack is large, jolly and an excellent leader and tactician; Stephen is small, disagreeable, and an exceptional physician and spy for the British government, despite his Irish-Catalan descent. They share an unlikely friendship and many adventures in exotic locations, as Stephen travels as Jack's on-board surgeon. The novels are much too intelligent and well-researched to be dismissed as just another historical boys' adventure, and they are littered with dark subjects of loss, mass violence, torture and addiction as well as comic episodes and marital mishaps. In all they build a fascinating portrait of an era and life in extreme conditions.

Jerry's Final Thought: A grand adventure series based upon humanity and the notions of the time, M&C gives us a glimpse of the past. The feel of this series is more for entertaining than a history book, but also imparts knowledge. We aren't meant to take many of the events as fact, but to live them with the characters in the hopes of taking away something.

Side Note: There are certainly parallels between this series and Horatio Hornblower, but this set of novels stands out on their own. All one need do is glimpse at the story to know how.
