Knocking on the doorjam, Jack peered about the lab. "Fargo? Are you in here?" It was a small pocket sized room with a few lab-tops. A couple computers sat on one in the center of the room.
"I'm over here." Fargo's voice sounded muffled, as if he was inside something.
Knowing the scientist, Jack had no doubt that was where exactly he would find him. He was about to enter the room when his eyes spotted something across the room. His heart nearly jumped from his chest at the sight of it. He would never forget just what it exactly was.
It sat inside a protective glass chamber like the previous one. The lights blinked, indicating the device was active.
The only thing that kept Jack's bowels from staining his pants was the fact he had gone before coming here. Feeling shaky, Jack staggered against the door. "Uh, Fargo. What's that doing here?"
"Just one second!" Inside the chamber, Fargo reached up to grasp a small light. Giving it a short twist, he made it glow brighter. "There!" Bending down, he scooted back out of the chamber. Once he was out, he grabbed the hatch and put it back in place. It sealed with a slight hiss.
"Please tell me you did not do what I think you just did." Sweat started to form under Jack's arms. Taking a shuddering breath, he took a step in to the lab. He had to move slow if he wasn't going to startle the obviously mad genius.
"I did it one better." Turning to grin at Jack, Fargo placed a fist on his hip. "I fixed it. It will work this time."
"Oh, crap." Jack wavered as his knees suddenly grew weak. "Why would you do this?"
Hearing the tremor in Jack's voice made Fargo's smile slip. "I can bring him back, both of them." Seeing that the other man was moving towards him, he sighed. "You don't understand. I know what went wrong and how to fix it. It's simple really. Well, not simple simple, but I can do this, Sheriff. I know I can."
"Okay, now you hold on just a second! There will be no fooling around with that." Jack indicated the massive device. "You hear me? We won't be fooling around with time again. That..."
"Was a mistake caused by a desperate man." Fargo had to shake his head. This was only making the man more upset. "You just don't understand. You'll forgive me later." Turning, he raced to the nearest computer.
"Fargo!" Adrenalin kicked Jack in to gear. He tried to make it to Fargo before the younger man could start the device.
His fingers smashing down the keys, Fargo typed in the initiation code. He sensed Jack behind him a heartbeat before he felt hands grab him about the waist. As they tightened on him, he hit the enter key. The next moment he went falling to the floor.
As he collapsed on top of the scientist, Jack heard the device begin to power up. The familiar hum made the skin on the back of his neck prickle. He stared down to Fargo's eyes in horror. "What have you done?"
Gasping for breath, Fargo could only close his eyes. His smile was the last thing Jack saw before a blue waved washed over them.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Snorting awake, Jack's eyes shot open. Something wet was drying on his cheek. Realizing it was drool, he reached up quickly to wipe it away. His mind was pretty fuzzy, but he was certain something bad had just happened.
He rolled over on to his back, pulling the blankets down his chest. Blinking in the dim light from the overheads, he tried to recall the dream. Nothing was coming to at the moment. So, he just lay there. Jack frowned as he tried to make himself recall.
All that came to mind was the usual. Fargo.
Groaning, Jack considered burying his head in the pillows. If he was dreaming about the geek doing bad things, then it was definitely way past time he took a vacation. "SARAH, what time is it?"
"It is now seven-twenty. Your wake up chime went off approximately twenty minutes ago."
This caused Jack to frown. That wasn't right. "Why didn't you wake me?"
"Zane instructed me that you were not to be disturbed."
Clenching his eyes shut, Jack growled to himself. What else was that prick going to mess up? "SARAH, reinstate chime. Do not allow anyone but me to turn it off ever again."
"All right, Sheriff Carter."
"Thank you." Rolling his eyes, Jack sat up. If he didn't get up now, he would be late. He didn't need to add tardiness to murder on his list of infractions for the day.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As he came down the steps, Jack was a surprised not to have his senses assaulted by his sister's presence. She had been breaking out her Yak urine or something like it when he went to bed last night. Much to his relief, nothing new was added. He stopped at the third step. He had assumed too quickly.
On the far wall was a painting he had definitely not placed there. Not that he was complaining. The painting was of Ebbets Field, the old Dodger's Stadium in Brooklyn. It was joined by a wall full of memorabilia. Jack stared at a signed picture in confusion.
It was of Jackie Robinson in his Dodgers uniform.
Jack knew he had a goofy grin on his face. He didn't care, though. In that moment, he loved his pain in the ass sister more than anything in the whole wide world! Speaking of the witch, he glanced about for any other changes she had made.
Much to his surprise, there wasn't any within sight. His eyebrows went up and he twisted his lips. Perhaps having Lexi there wouldn't be so bad after all. Then again, perhaps sun light might explode out of his ass.
Feeling a little giddy, he turned and headed towards the kitchen. Through the doorway, he could see Zoe eating breakfast at the bar. "Hey! Have you seen your aunt this morning?"
Mouth full, Zoe shook her head. She cast a glare at the fridge.
Jack raised an eyebrow. Turning to glance over, he found the door open, someone's butt poking out past it. The raised eyebrow turned in to a frown. "May I..."
"I sent your sister to a motel." Standing up, Zane hefted a carton of eggs. "If she makes one more remark about Chi, Chai, Soy, or Fung Shit, I am going to program one of Fargo's experiments to eat her!"
Jack backed up a step. He didn't know whether to begin shouting or throw a fit. Curiosity won out, and he went with quietly freak out. "Whoa! What is going on here?" Facing his daughter, he sent her a frown. He knew she had something to do with this.
Having swallowed, Zoe huffed at him. "Don't look at me, I'm not the one who's nesting!"
"Oh, ha ha!" Zane spun and kicked the door shut with his foot. "It's not too late for boarding school."
"Hey, watch the fridge!" Jack had had enough. It was bad enough the guy was in his house without invitation. He turned to tell him off, then froze when he caught sight of the other man.
Carrying the eggs to the counter, Zane plunged them down with a growl. "Please don't start with me this morning, Jack." The front of his robe hung open, revealing a pair of Jack's white boxers. "It was bad enough we were fighting about her last night instead of..."
"Whoa! Hey! Teenage daughter here!" Staring at them, Zoe looked a little pale. "I'm trying to eat my breakfast and keep it down."
Feeling a little faint, Jack swayed on his feet. "Oh, I think I need to sit down." He nearly fell over when Zane crossed to his side. The strong hand placed to his cheek made him swallow. "Now I know I need to sit down."
Staring at the older man in concern, Zane cocked an eyebrow. "You're not looking so hot. May be you should get back in to bed. I'll bring you something up to eat in a few minutes."
"Better make a run for it, Dad. This time you might not escape with just a stomach ache." Zoe stuck her tongue out at Zane's glare.
"No, I think you're right. I'll just go lay back down." Turning, Jack gently pried himself from Zane's touch. On shaky feet, he plodded back to the stairs. Whatever had happened since the last time he had been awake, this had to be Fargo's fault.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Making sure that Zane and Zoe were down stairs still, Jack picked up his phone. The number was pounded in to the phone as his anger built. There was only one person he knew stupid enough to get him in to this situation.
The line was picked up mid ring the first time. "Hey, Jack."
"Don't you hey me, you little worm! What did you do this time?" If he had been there in person, Jack would have wrung Fargo's neck. As it was, he only clenched his phone tighter. "Don't bother denying it, I know you did something."
"I fixed it, Jack. I brought him back."
There was so much happiness in Fargo's voice, that it nearly made Jack's teeth hurt. "Brought who?"
"Nathan." He sighed with pleasure. "He's alive, a little fat, well, a whole lot of fat, but he's alive. The good news is, Allison is happy, they're married, and all is right in the world once more."
"Oh, quite the contrary." Jack cast a quick look to the doorway to make sure he was still alone. "Do you know who is down stairs, wearing my boxers? Do you?"
"Uh...no?" Fargo's swallow came through loud and clear. "Some lucky woman?"
"It's Zane, Fargo, Zane! Apparently I am sleeping with Zane now. Thank you very much for that!" By now he was so angry he wanted to hit something. Jack glanced over to his gun belt in the closet. It was tempting, oh, so tempting. "Better finish up whatever experiment you're working on, Fargo. Because when I get dressed, I'm coming in to town, and I'm going to shoot you. That's right, I'm going to shoot you."
"Jack!" He didn't get a chance to finish his protest as Jack hung up on him.
Just in time too.
As he slammed the phone down, he heard footsteps on the stairs. Remember that Zane was bringing him breakfast in bed, Jack rolled his eyes. This was just perfect. When he thought nothing worse could happen, Fargo comes along.
This time, he was going to do something about it. He was going to make sure the man didn't get away with it. Fargo was an adult, he should have known better than to be screwing around with time. Remembering that this was Eureka only made Jack want to cry.
"Shouldn't you be in bed?" Standing in the doorway, Zane held up a breakfast tray of food. On it was buttered toast, two types of sausage, a small omelet, a quartered orange, two white pills and a small glass of something bubbling suspiciously. "I brought you a little hangover cure. You were hammered last night."
"I was?" Seeing all of it made Jack's mouth water. Knowing the drink was alcoholic should have made him a little weary. Yet, all he could think about was how good it probably tasted.
Zane smirked at him. "I don't blame you. Meeting her in person, I'm surprised and kind of proud of you." His nose quirked as he set the tray on the table. "If she were my sister, I would have framed her for something by now. Probably terrorism. I hear Guantanamo needs it's Feng Shui fixed."
"What?" Disturbed, Jack glanced up from the tray of food. "Lexi? Oh, yeah." He frowned as his world got a little more hectic. "Look, I've got to get in to town. There's something I need to do."
"I have to admit, Jack, there's another reason I sent you back up here." Stalking around the bed, Zane came up to Jack. He smiled as the man turned to face him. "We didn't get to finish what we started last night."
As Jack watched the robe slip from Zane's shoulders, he made a mental note to kill Fargo slowly.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Sitting in the booth, Jack watched the people pass by the glass door. His sunglasses stood out in the cafe, but his eyes were killing him. He knew he should have taken those aspirin before he left. Too bad he had been a little distracted.
The bite mark on his neck stung when it was hit by a breeze blowing through the doorway. Someone was entering the cafe, blocking his light. From the silhouette, Jack knew who it was. It made his jaw clench. This sent an ache through his jaw from the bite mark there.
Fargo made a shy glance about the cafe. Upon spotting Jack, he froze. Then, he reluctantly made his way over. He slipped in to the booth with the look of a man facing his executioner. "Please, let me explain."
"I don't care about your explanations. I know why you did it. It's always the same reason why anyone does it." Putting his hands on the table top, Jack gripped the edge with his thumbs. "The fact is, you did it, and now, you're going to pay the price."
Looking down, Fargo swallowed. He nodded. "I know."
"Good." Closing his eyes, Jack took a calming breath. When he felt calm enough not to go for his gun, he released the table.
Fargo was surprised when nothing more was said. He had figured Jack would carryout his threat. Just to be sure, he looked up at the other man. What he saw made him frown. "Hey, what happened to your neck?"
Jack's grip on the table returned with a vengeance. "What do you think happened?" He leaned over the table to hiss it at the man. "Remember when I was affected by that ancient pollen that made me irresistible? Well, apparently there was a slight twist in this universe."
"It's was a spore, actually." Fargo winced. He couldn't help himself.
"I don't care. It made me gay! I'm gay for Zane!" Gritting his teeth, Jack saw his knuckles turn white. "You made me gay, Fargo."
"That's impossible. The spores didn't work that way." Fargo pulled back as Jack leaned further over the table. He cringed when the man raised a hand. "At most, you're bi. The spores only enhanced your appeal to other people, not the other way around."
"Zane was with me that day, not Henry. He got called away and I had to take the only person available." Jack's voice was a low growl as he spoke. The anger made him snarl a couple times during his explanation. "When we didn't show up, a team with bio-hazard suits was sent in. Apparently they found us fucking like bunnies."
"So, you're with Zane." Fargo considered this for a moment. Then, he gave Jack a small smile. "At least you found someone to make you happy, that's good."
Jack snapped. Snarling, he lunged across the table.
