Who: Erine Macmillan and Susan Bones
What: Relaxing, and Ernie needs to do some explaining.
Where: Room of Requirement
When: Friday at six!
Rating: PG maybe?
Open/Closed: Closed

Ernie walked along the seventh floor corridor by the painting with the trolls learning ballet three times with Susan, thinking 'I need a comfortable place to talk to Susan without being interrupted'. The door appeared, as expected, and Ernie opened it to a relatively small and comfortable looking room with a pair of squishy chairs, a window looking over the lake, and a little table. Absolutely perfect for their discussion and sugar quills.

Ernie flopped undignifiedly into one of the chairs, leaving Susan to take the other chair, before he said, "Thanks Susan. You know I'd never take a break if you didn't remind me." He smiled at her, because it was true, and he needed his friends to save him from himself sometimes. "Tell me, how was your week? Did you enjoy your birthday?" The question he didn't ask was 'did you like your present', which he wanted to say, but was just a little afraid to. Besides, he prefered this topic of conversation to the other one that he would have to discuss. He had promised.

[ooc: Ernie got something like this for Susan's birthday, except more real.]

Susan had some of the most amazing friends in the world, she really did. Never in a million years did she expect to receive so many birthday wishes, and gifts. It was a little overwhelming for the usually timid, and shy girl to be in the spot light like she was, but it was nice none the less. After making sure she wrote out all her thank you cards, and hand delivered them the next day, did she really have time to sit down and actually think about what Ernie might have to talk to her about. A lot of things have been happening around the school, and while nothing truly effected Susan directly (which she was grateful about, considering so many things have been changing in her life recently) it was still a little unsettling to see friends and classmates uncomfortable and upset.

Pacing the length part of the corridor with Ernie, she was thinking something just simple and comfortable, and as the door appeared and the room revealed Susan had to gasp in awe, "This room is amazing." A bright smile curled on her lips, as she pulled a package of sugar quills from her robes and placed them on the little between them. Climbing onto the chair, Susan curled up and practically sank into the chair. Shifting just slightly, she gave Ernie a dazzling smile before pushing red curls out of her green gaze, "Well, you're welcome, that's what friends are for, yeah? I am positive if I started engulfing myself into schoolwork, you would do the same, just to keep my sanity." While Susan doubted that would ever happen, she would hope her friends would do the same for her as she does for them, and if not the same then at least try.

"Oh, my week? It was interesting, I got on Acceptable on my Potions essay, and Professor Sprout told me that the Chinese Chomping Cabbages have never been happier since I started working on them." Blushing slightly, her modest same came out, as she tilted her head, "My birthday was nice, I don't think I have ever had so many people wish me happy birthday at once." Her hand subconsciously moved over the necklace Ernie gave her, as she felt the Badger shield on her index finger. "I really like my necklace, Ernie, it's beautiful. One of the best gifts I got this year," Laughing, she then quickly added, "But don't tell Hannah I said that, she might get mad."

"How has your week been?"

"Well, yes," Ernie said with a smile, "that's what friends are for. I think you do a better job of not needing rescued though." He didn't think he could remember a time when Susan had been so caught up in schoolwork and other things, but he could think of two when he had needed help, this year alone.

"That's great about the Cabbages Susan! And I'm glad you enjoyed your birthday. It was all rather thrown together, but it did turn out well." When Susan said that his present was one of the best she had recieved, Ernie smiled brightly, feeling happier about that than he figured he had any real right to, before promising, "I won't tell anyone. I'll keep it in here," he continued, tapping his chest over where his heart was.

But when the conversation turned to him, as he had knew it would, he sighed. "This week was fine. A lot of schoolwork to be done, and Head Boy duties, but it was generally pretty reasonable. Last week was much worse." And now he would have to explain. That was the point.

There was no doubt that Susan had her aunt's mind when it came to juggling multiple tasks at once. "Well you have a lot more on your plate then I do, Ernie. You're trying to balance school work on top of Head Boy duties, it's very demanding on you." A tiny smile curled on her lips, as she grabbed the package of sugar quills from the table, and open them. Pulling out two she held one out for him, "You need to learn not to be so hard on yourself, you're doing a good job. Professor McGonagall would not have picked you if she didn't think you could handle it."

Sucking on the end of the sugar quill thoughtfully, "Well, it was still lovely, and just what all of use needed I think." Nodding matter of factly, Susan had to be a strange and rare form of a girl, caring and compassionate she was always willing to put the needs of others ahead of herself, and when it came to focusing on her, she found a way to include everyone else. Typically, this forced her to be a little timid in situations, trying to get a feel for other people before putting herself out there. She did shy away from big group gatherings, and for the record Dumbledore's Army has to be one of the biggest groups she has ever been a part of at one time.

Catching that sigh, her head tilted to the side as she pushed away her own thoughts to focus on Ernie. "Last week was a bit hectic, but I think you and Padma handled it well. At least this week slowed down, yeah? And there's no more reports of itchy students," The entire situation involving packages laced with itching powder was a bit immature. Susan could never fathom someone actually being that upset about the squid leaving.

Ernie took the offered sugar quill with a smile of gratitude. "I suppose you're right. This year hasn't gone that badly, a couple of incidents excepted." Of course, every year they had had a couple of incidents that needed to be excepted for the year to be good. Sometimes there were more, and other times there were less, but they were always there. Ernie thought this might be one of those years where there were more.

"A party and distraction will always be good for us all," Ernie agreed, "and yours was quite effective. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I did too." Ernie smiled. "Even if the group was a little larger than necessary."

But then Ernie shook his head. "The Squid being taken away and the itching letters were only part of it. We coped reasonably, and Padma better than me. I am thankful that this week was calmer, but there are things left over hanging over my head. That's why I'm like this." Ernie thought that said about the right amount for a start. Preparation for the whole thing, but nothing too awful.

"And what is a school year without a couple of incidences, yeah?" Her bright smile was offered as she held up her quill like she was toasting to the past week, "Just think, Ernie, if all the excitement occurs now, imagine all the fun and relaxation that's to come!" Giggling, Susan tried to make him see the brighter side to a messy situation.

Susan only nodded in agreement to his statement that the group was a little larger than necessary. She wasn't one to complain, especially since it was only Hufflepuff members anyways. If other houses began to show up she might have been a little more upset. Not that she would complain one way or another, she just probably would have been more quiet if there were MORE people there.

Carefully sucking on the quill, she listened to what Ernie had to say, before a tiny sympathetic smile surfaced to her lips which were slowly turning a slight blue from the flavoring of the quill. "Well, what's still lingering over your head? The squid is in a safer location, I think, could you imagine if it stayed here and all those angry Slytherin's suddenly decided to seek revenge? Oh Merlin, they would probably harm him!" Shivering slightly at that thought, those pale green eyes looked over at Ernie.

Ernie couldn't help it. He rolled his eyes at the idea of any part of this year being fun and relaxing. That was, before he joined Susan in laughing. He couldn't help that either. Susan laughing just made him want to laugh too.

"Well," Ernie began, biting off the tip of his sugar quill and bracing himself for the whole story to come out. "The Slytherins rather did have their revenge, that's why the Squid isn't here. But they could also find out where the squid was if they really wanted. And they are still bitter about those packages. And you know how Megan and the Weasleys and all the others felt about the Squid leaving, and they wanted to make sure it was safe."

Ernie grimaced. "Merlin, Susan, I don't know what I was thinking. But..." Ernie bit off a little more of the sugar quill in the hope that it would bring some Gryffindor-style courage, and finished, "I cut a deal with a Slytherin."

"Well, I don't think they would get that desperate," Susy was just trying to reason with him, while the Slytherin's did seem like a ruthless bunch, it seemed highly unlikely that they would go to such great measures as actually seeking out the squid to torture it some more. "I mean, after all, the majority of them seemed content just to have the squid out of the lake," Biting her tongue she mulled over that thought. "It is unfortunate, though, I'm going to miss the squid, he never really harmed anyone before..." Her voice trailed off as Ernie seemed to get really upset.

Frowning slightly, her head tilted to the side as a look of concern washed over her, "Ernie," His name came out with a gasp of shock, "Oh, Ernie, you didn't, did you?" That question was more rhetorical as she tried to fathom him actually striking a deal with a Slytherin. "What sort of deal could you make with a Slytherin? At least what sort of fair deal could you make with a Slytherin?"

Susan couldn't understand this, Ernie was Head Boy! Head Boys weren't supposed to cut deals. Susan's tone was more concern then it was judgmental. While she certainly did not approve of this sort of action, she remained open minded. If Ernie needed to cut a deal with a Slytherin, then things must have been REALLY bad. This is Ernie Macmillan after all!

Ernie grimaced. "It's true." He laughed bitterly. "See why I couldn't tell you through the journals?" Truth be told, Ernie wasn't that worried. Vaisey seemed a fairly decent bloke, for a Slytherin, and it was just like a business deal. It was just... admitting that he had done it was the hardest part. Or that's what he kept telling himself.

And now Ernie had to fill in the details. "The deal was basically that he would try to find out where the Squid was, and I would try to find out who sent those packages. We both worked at it a bit, and, well, neither of us found the answer yet. I now have a list of two probable lochs for the Squid, and he has as much proof as I've been able to find."

He sighed. "We both wanted what we were looking for anyway, and it seemed easier to just not have to do twice the looking." When he phrased it like that it didn't seem too bad, did it? Admittedly it had been stressful, and he still hadn't found the answers, but there was nothing specifically objectionable.

While Ernie laughed bitterly Susan just glanced away from him and down to the half eaten sugar quill in her hand. Susan was at a loss for words, and she attempted to find them as Ernie continued to justify his actions. Turning the sugar quill over in her fingers, the candy no longer looked appetizing. Susan couldn't really pin point while this upset her so much, perhaps it was the fact that this was Ernie. Maybe if it was coming from someone else she wouldn't be feeling this... well, she couldn't really pin point how she felt.

Picking her next words carefully, she finally spoke. "Just... be careful, with the current track record the Slytherin's hold, I'm not quite sure how much someone should trust in them." Biting down on her bottom lip, Susan didn't want to make it seem like she was questioning him, but she did want him to be careful.

"Regardless, I see now why you have been so stressed," Her look of concern instantly washed away to sympathy, as she returned her gaze to Ernie. "What sort of steps have you been taking to find out who sent those packages? Do you have any suspects?"

Ernie was uncomfortable that Susan was uncomfortable. There wasn't much he could do really, everything had been in motion for a full week now at least. It wasn't like it was someting he could go back on, especially not when it was a Slytherin.

"I know it doesn't make it much better," he conceded, knowing he had thought out this arguement with himself too, "but my dad was in his dad's year, and he's never had reason to complain about him, and he's not some crazy Death Eater. Still a Slytherin, and I know I need to watch out, but my dad deals with their lot frequently enough. And I'm not putting any sensitive information in their hands." He felt like he was trying to convince himself that he was still himself just as much as he was trying to reassure Susan.

"So yes, that sort of would explain it." He sighed. "As for suspects, Miss Weasley and Miss Capper has been avoiding me lately as well as being loudly against the Squid's departure and pulling the previous prank on the Slytherins. And I imagine the Weasley twins would be the ideal source for itching powder, although it is not to be found in their catalogue." Ernie very delibrately did not answer Susan's question about his methods, mostly because somewhere along the line he had decided that he was not cut out for detective work.

Placing the sugar quill on the table, she shifted in her seat, pulling her legs up to her chest and wrapping her arms around her knees. "Well, I suppose if your father can trust them there should be no harm in consulting with them once in a while. Though, that doesn't mean I am about to chat up Pansy Parkinson about potions homework." Hiding her playful smirk behind a few strands of hair that fell into her gaze, Susan controlled her laugh. Running her fingers through auburn curls, she pushed them back over shoulders.

"Ginny and Samantha? I mean, I shouldn't be surprised, considering Ginny's brothers and their past history with pulling pranks, but this seems particularly malicious, especially since it sent two students to the hospital wing." Shaking her head, Susan attempted to rack her brain for other suspects, but just on the mere fact that there seemed like no one else more fitting made Sam and Ginny ideal suspects.

"You might be right, Ernie, but... do you have any proof? I don't think Professor McGonagall will consider 'previous history of pranking, and related to Fred and George' as a valid reason to blame them. Were you able to come in possession of one of the packages? Maybe there is some evidence there? Didn't the sender write a postcard? Maybe the handwriting is recognizable, or... the owl that delivered the packages? Or something!"

"And I wouldn't suggest it," Ernie replied, smiling slightly at her Pansy comment. "That girl can be vicious. I wouldn't trust any of the Slytherins in our year really, although I haven't spoken to several of them, so perhaps that is a bit unfair."

Ernie nodded. "Yes, those two. They are the prime suspects, and I think the Slytherins know it too. And I think... well, itching powder isn't in the WWW catalogue, so perhaps it was in testing and they weren't aware of it's potential?" Ernie didn't think they would try to hurt anyone unless someone was trying to hurt them. They weren't malicious people, and he knew that. Fiercely independent, trouble-making, all sorts of things, but not malicious.

Shaking his head, Ernie replied, "No! They're good at what they do, and I can't find any proper proof. Daphne destroyed her package, which is perfectly logical, but not particularly helpful now. She couldn't even describe the owl. Astoria never replied. There's no proof, so we can't act on anything." Ernie felt absolutely stumped, and frustrated.

Resting her chin on her knees, Susan was attempting to figure out a solution for him, or at least some encouraging words. "Nothing is more distressing then a guilty conscious, Ernie. I think that if you can't find evidence of them, maybe it's time to drop the attempts to find the suspect, and wait for the suspect, or suspects to come forward." It sounded so simple, but maybe Susan was on to something.

"Or, perhaps pin the blame on someone else, someone you know is truly innocent, perhaps then the real perpetrator or perpetrators, will come forward. If it is Ginny and Sam, knowing them, they wouldn't let someone else fall for something they didn't do, right? After all, they're not in Slytherin." Susan hoped that made sense, and hopefully he wouldn't think any less of her for thinking up something so devious, and sly. She wasn't exactly the most deceptive of people, but desperate times, yeah?

Ernie considered everything that Susan said. "You might have a point. I mean, we know what they are likely to do. Although it seems rather unfortunate to be blaming someone we know didn't do it. And what if the Slytherins decide to go after them?" He sighed. "But it might work, and I just want to solve this." The idea made a lot of sense, and it could work if they could make sure there was nothing that could go horribly wrong.

He thought about it for a little while longer. It was unorthodox, of course, but not any more than making deals with Slytherins anyway. But who could they blame that wouldn't hate them for it forever?

A smile drifted across her lips as Ernie actually supported her idea. It was certainly unorthodox, and might be a bit risky, but it might actually get them somewhere. "And perhaps, maybe try talking to Astoria, she seems like the more pleasant of the pair. I feel bad, I overheard a few of her classmates saying that her itching was so terrible that she was actually trying to rip her skin off." Shaking her head, Susan might not have approved of Daphne's decision to have the squid removed, but that didn't mean the girl and her younger sister deserved to become a victim of itching powder.

"If that itching powder came from Fred and George's shop, I can hardly imagine what they would be making it for. I mean, to have an invention be so itchy it makes someone want to scratch their skin off? That seems dangerous not funny." Shuddering slightly, Susan picked up the rest of her sugar quill from the table and bit off a piece.

"Don't worry, Ernie, my aunt used to say that when things look bad, just think how much worse it could be." A reassuring smile was given to the boy before she went back to nibbling on the sugar quill.

"I should try to get in touch with Astoria," Ernie agreed. "She actually opened her package, so she might have noticed more about it than Daphne did." Whatever he felt about the squid, the vengence was totally uncalled for - and he couldn't see why going after Daphne's sister would be reasonable.

Ernie definitely agreed about the reaction. He didn't think Fred and George wanted to hurt people, for the most part, which is why he could only imagine that the severity of the reaction was an accident. "I know," he said, "it's odd. I can't recall them ever doing something to delibrately hurt someone. I think they just used an experimental product and didn't realize." It certainly matched what he had heard about the many flaws of the early Skiving Snackboxes.

At Susan's encouraging words, Ernie smiled. "Thanks Susan. That's always true." Picking up his forgotten sugar quill, he began to bite bits of the end off again.

Susan allowed silence to fall between them as she studied the last few bites of her sugar quill. Popping the rest into her mouth, she savored the lingering flavor of blueberry. "Whatever you decide to do, Ernie, I will stand by you, and I know our friends will as well. You need to stop doubting yourself, and give yourself more credit. You're smart, Ernie, and brilliant," Susan wanted to add that he was perfect but she bit her tongue and just swallowed the rest of the sugar quill down.

Quickly averting her gaze she looked out the window which was overlooking the lake. The empty lake without a single ripple breaking it's glassy reflection. "Who's going to save the first years when they fall over the boats now?" Susan wasn't really posing the question for Ernie, it was more in general.

Despite still feeling a touch pessimistic and slightly stressed, feelings which he had accepted were just not going to go away, Ernie felt much better for having talked to Susan. "Thanks Susan," he said, smiling, "It's brillinat to know that I have you all as the best friends anyone could ever want. You especially. Listening to me complain about life. I don't know how you do it, but I'm grateful that you're so amazing."

Ernie watched Susan for a moment, while she turned to look at the lake, turning toward where she was looking when she spoke again. "I just hope we don't need to find out," he replied.

Oh Merlin, cheeks flushes a bright crimson at the compliment. Tilting her head down just try and hide that blush, Susan just smiled into her knees. Compliments were one thing she never took very well, the girl was modest, and hardly thought anything of herself when it came to helping her friends. "Well, that's what friends are for, yeah? I don't mind listening to you talk, or any of our friends." She said quietly, the girl was suddenly overcome with shyness as she tried to control that blushing. It wasn't that she was ashamed, she just didn't think it was that big of a deal.

"Do you think he's happy, the squid, wherever he is? I don't think the Ministry would send him anywhere horrid where he might get hurt." Gaze finally lifted from her knees to look over at Ernie once more.

Ernie knew that Susan didn't take complements well from years of knowing her, so when she blushed crimson, he just smiled. He meant every word of it, and Susan deserved to hear it. "That's what friends are for," he agreed, "which is why you're a good friend to have." He was not going to let her brush the compliment aside completely, because as far as Ernie was concerned, it was a big deal.

Considering the Squid, Ernie was much less certain. "I think he's doing alright," he replied hesitantly, "and I don't think he'll be hurt." He wasn't sure, but that's what he heard from so many sources that he was starting to beleive it too, although he didn't place quite as much confidence in the Ministry.
