Ernie took the offered sugar quill with a smile of gratitude. "I suppose you're right. This year hasn't gone that badly, a couple of incidents excepted." Of course, every year they had had a couple of incidents that needed to be excepted for the year to be good. Sometimes there were more, and other times there were less, but they were always there. Ernie thought this might be one of those years where there were more.
"A party and distraction will always be good for us all," Ernie agreed, "and yours was quite effective. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I did too." Ernie smiled. "Even if the group was a little larger than necessary."
But then Ernie shook his head. "The Squid being taken away and the itching letters were only part of it. We coped reasonably, and Padma better than me. I am thankful that this week was calmer, but there are things left over hanging over my head. That's why I'm like this." Ernie thought that said about the right amount for a start. Preparation for the whole thing, but nothing too awful.
