It's a Wizards world, we just live in it!
Characters: Merlin and Elphaba
When: This evening, starting before the Z-spell activates
Location: Her place, the streets, a cafe, and---?
Warnings/Rating: Unknown!
Summary: Merlin sets out to learn more about a fellow magic user, and things take an odd turn.
Status: Closed and ongoing

Merlin flew across the city, humming internally as he banked around toward Elphaba's place. He liked this odd little woman, and she made him smile. She was new and her magic sounded intriguing. So many intriguing people in this city!

Merlin dove as he felt the wind swirl through and past his feathers, using powerful wings to bank around again and enjoying himself as he did so. He thought truly that it might be fun to have this meeting of the minds with other magic users, and to learn of their magics, and of the wielders themselves, and how their worlds related to the magics.

Merlin slid down to the door of the address he had been given and on a lark, he used magic to knock of the door, hovering before it, still in owl form.

Merlin in the owl form, bowed it's beak, hooted, then flared it's wings and with that flaring, shimmered and before her eyes flowed to the full-sized Merlin, eyes wide and warm. He gave her a bow, eyes twinkling.

"My dear lady! It is my pleasure to meet you, face to face, as it were." He thought she looked pretty, but less so than her true form.

As the owl shifted back into its human form, Elphaba watched with interest. She'd never seen a transformation spell quite like that before. She'd transformed a man of flesh and blood into one made of tin with a spell, but never had shape-changed someone the way Merlin just had. As such, she was intrigued and wondered if she could learn a similar spell. No doubt such a spell had its uses, and Elphaba liked being prepared for anything with non-hazardous spells. When he bowed to her, Elphaba gave him a little curtsey.

"It's a pleasure to meet you as well, Merlin," she greeted. "I hope it wasn't too difficult to find my house?" It wasn't strange to her to call it her house anymore. Originally, it had been Jack Skellington's and he'd let her stay there with him. When he'd been sent back to his world, she'd made it her home. Having roommates helped keep her from feeling lonely as it was a sizable house. "I'm ready to go if you are," she said. So far, so good. No signs of the awkward babbling that she was sometimes prone to when she was nervous or flustered.

"Nay. Your directions were most clear." Her words had led him as straight as an arrow. Merlin snapped his fingers, and a flower appeared as he held it out to her.

"I am ready, milady." Merlin smiled softly to her and extended his arm to her. "Let us walk, and view the world tonight." He bounced on his toes.

"For that, I am glad." Elphaba smiled gently. This smiling thing was becoming a more natural reaction for her. And she attributed it to Elena, and Galinda while she'd been here. It was still rather an odd thing to her personally, but the more she smiled, the more normal and natural it would become, right? When the flower appeared and he held it out to her, Elphaba blinked for a moment before she blushed softly, taking it. That was something that Elphaba still didn't really know how to take because it happened so rarely to her.

"Then let us be off," she responded, briefly calling back to Jeremy that she was heading out, then took Merlin's arm and closed the door behind them. "Have you become familiar with the city yet or is it still quite foreign and strange to you?" Elphaba looked at him curiously. It would dictate whether he led the way or if she did.

Merlin shook his head. "I am still learning and mostly flying or teleporting to where I would go. The strange House of Wal-mart, and the Waffle Court, those two are places I go most often."

He nodded to her, enthusiastic to talk with her, and to walk with her. He smiled, eyes dancing a bit. This world was strange and much of what people did and said was stranger still. But it was nonetheless not a bad thing.

And Elphaba, she was a good woman and a fellow magic user. he was sure he would learn much from her.

"Ah yes, I know where those are. I think I know a few places to walk by that you might be interested in. Do you like to read?" It was possibly a silly question since he was obviously interested in learning magic, and usually any thirst for learning was accompanied by a liking of reading. So even before she heard his response, Elphaba began walking them in the direction of the public library. It was a place she spent a lot of time at. She still had her days when she wanted nothing more than to be lost in a sea of books instead of being social.

It was exciting to meet Merlin, and she was intrigued to learn about his magic. Elphaba was glad that she'd both remembered and suggested the magic users meet. It would help a great deal for when large crises occurred here. They would all have a better idea of who could do what and so forth. And she was determined to ensure the meetings kept some sort of regular pattern because they all really did need to share their magic. In a world where anything could happen at any given time, it was best to have a team of magic users pooling their magic together to help aid in the fight.

"I do, milady. I enjoy it fiercely. I have gathered many books quickly to my home, to read and to try to understand this time and the times between." He smiled to her as they walked. He was more than willing to follow her and he did so with a spring in his step.

As he walked, he wiggled his fingers, mind on their moment, and on a thought of his as well. Light flickered along his fingers as his thoughts called magic, but those around them would see nothing, for he had come to understand subtlety, and his magic hid from most.

"I am eager to learn all I can in this age." He was, for in such learning he saw his future.

Elphaba looked at him and smiled. She did like that, and it only served to further improve her opinion of Merlin. "That's good. Reading and learning are things I treasure. There is much this place has to offer in learning about things. I think history is my favorite subject to learn about. I have been very interested in learning about Earth's history." So clearly the library would be a good place to walk by. "Have you been to the library yet? I like spending time there. So many books you wouldn't be able to choose where to start!" She spoke with some excitement, for learning and reading did excite her. Elphaba was, for lack of a better term, a bookworm.

As they walked, Elphaba noticed a flicker of light and she looked at at his fingers, tilting her head in curiosity. That was really an intriguing thing. She herself had no such abilities in that way. "What kind of spell is that?" She asked it in a tone only Merlin would hear. No need to draw attention to them, though she didn't exactly realize that no one else would be able to see the light.

"There is much to learn, and it is all exciting and enticing to learn about." She said with a nod. Even in the near two years she'd been in this place and all that she'd learned, she still had so much to learn about. And that is what she loved. There was so much she had to learn about magic as well as about everything else in this world. At least her people skills were finally showing some improvement. Though they were still quite awkward sometimes, but she was better than she had been.

He smiled back at her, warmth radiating from his expression. he wondered at finding such a woman so quickly, who so shared his interests. It seemed impossible. And yet... "I have been to one, but nothing near here. There are so many books here. There were not as many in all England, when I was alive in the past. Scrolls, and stone writings, but books... those are amazing." He spoke with relish, for he longed to own them all, to read them and inhale them.

"Hm? Oh, I was pondering what you were saying and trying to decide on a book to show you. I have a precious few, recreated from my time, in my tower, and was trying to decide which to summon... so, ah, a summoning spell, is the answer you sought." His cheeks tinged a touch red.

"Then I think you'll like this library. There are so many books covering so many different genres and topics. You could get lost within if you aren't careful. I admit to being a frequent patron of the library and sitting in a corner with a stack of books." Elphaba smiled a bit sheepishly. She did love keeping her nose stuck in a book, but why she kept rambling at Merlin was beyond her. While it was a mostly normal thing for her to do, she didn't tend to do it this much unless she was flustered. And she wasn't flustered currently. So it must be coming from her excitement over the topic.

Listening to Merlin's response, she tilted her head a bit and smiled. "You can summon things too? That's interesting. And I'd love to see any books that you have." Elphaba liked exchanging knowledge. So she would be very interested in seeing just what Merlin knew. He seemed to have a touch for magic that she didn't. Of course, Elphaba had a variety of spells within her Grimmerie, but she didn't exactly understand the spells. She still wasn't even certain why she could read that spellbook in the first place when it had been written in a lost language.

"Truly? Then I shall probably do so." He smiled softly as he listened, enjoying her flow of words. "You speak well, milady, and wisely. I have often whiled away some small time reading books and parchments, finding new things to learn and old favorites to enjoy."

He smiled at her, eyes dancing. "I can, yes. and I enjoy being able to send and receive things from my tower, I admit." he chuckled. "I am not lazy and yet I do not trust these modern conveniences entirely. So I use magic."

He stepped lightly and then reached out, and pulled, and in his hand was a leather bound book, old, and engraved with words in golden hue. "Ah, yes. This is a book of words from my time and place, remade by me here." He held it out to her as they walked. Inside she would find it beautifully illustrated and words written in an ancient language, one that would slowly blur and become intelligible to her. It was a beginner primer for magic of his world, and had much of theory...

"Sometimes I think the librarians think I'm antisocial or something because I can sit there for hours reading without a care for anything else." She smiled and blushed at his compliment, her free hand grabbing some ends of her long hair and fidgeting with it. "Thank you, I am glad you think so. It must be all the reading I've done." She chuckled softly, her dark eyes having a sparkle to them.

Listening to his explanation, she nodded in understand. "It's more of using something familiar to you. And it can be strange getting used to things in this place. But I think you'll get the hang of it. In many ways, the technology here is much like magic. So you can always try looking at it like that?" She made the offer, hoping it would help him adjust better to technology and the like here.

When he handed her the book, she took it and opened it, beginning to page through it. Though at first, the language was strange and one she didn't know, but she found the words changed into a language she could read. And, of course, she couldn't help but start to read it as she walked. Elphaba was completely unaware of her surroundings, save for Merlin, as she walked. Books had a way of sucking her in in such a way, and she had a history of walking while reading. It almost always ended up with her running into someone or something. "This is fascinating," she said after a minute of reading.

Merlin smiled at her. "There is nothing wrong with letting your mind wandering into a world of knowledge and intrigue, by wandering the halls of information, milady." He nodded. "You are wise for one so young." He nodded again, squeezing her hand.

"Oh, indeed, technology is a kind of magic. This I know. I just do not entirely understand or trust it yet. It is artificial." His nose wrinkled and he shook his head. "I suppose in some ways I am somewhat affected by where and when I came from."

He offered her a soft smile as he let her take her hand back to better hold the book. "I hope you shall enjoy it, and ask me any questions you wish. While I am no master, I have had to debate on the subject quite a lot." His easy smile was warm.

He reached out his hand, and let it rest on her shoulder,. subtly guiding her as they walked, and making sure no obstacles barred their way. Once there was a power pole and people to the left an right, but a whispered word and they passed through it with nary a ripple.

"No, there isn't. More people should engage their minds in such a way." At the comment of her being so young, she chuckled a bit. "I'm not all that young. Well I am, but I'm practically at the doorstep of 30. But thank you for the compliment," she said. The thank you was almost an afterthought as she still wasn't used to such compliments.

"That is understandable. It's just as close as normal people in this world can get to magic. They have to create it artificially because they don't have the gift with which to use real magic. But I'm sure the longer you are here, the more familiar with and trusting of it you will become. The internet has quite the vast stores of knowledge on more subjects than you could possibly name."

Elphaba read on, not exactly aware that Merlin was guiding her and keeping her from walking into something that could hurt her. She was, however, appreciative of that because she really wasn't observant when she had her nose in a book. And considering this was a book that contained theory of magic from where Merlin was from? That was an entirely fascinating topic. But after a few minutes, she looked up at him.

"How prevalent is magic in your world? Have you met others with magic?" She suddenly found herself curious on the matter and wondered just how similar his world and hers were. Of course, she didn't think everyone in his world had magic, it seemed that across all the realities represented by those displaced by the Seal some were born with the gift of magic and some weren't. Which did make sense.

"I should rephrase, milady. You are smarter and have a wiser bent to your words and thoughts than most your age." He smiled to her as they walked. She was an intriguing person. Somehow, he was unsure if he was speaking right, but he was trying. This time, this place was confusing, sometimes.

Merlin nodded, lips twisting slightly. He doubted he would trust technology that much. Magic, yes, but technology? Not likely. He smiled as he walked with her, thinking on the changes between times. Technology was the easy way things were done, he felt, but surely someone would see it the other way? Hm.

"There is much magic, and there are many magical things, but there are few magic users. Among the humans, anyway. Other races are more prevalent with magic." He nodded. elves, dwarves, the giants, and many other strange races.

Now it was Elphaba's turn to blush at his compliment. She smiled shyly, ducking her head a bit. "Thank you. I always treasured such things, and still do. A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Which is why I read a lot." Books and animals had long been her only friends, and she knew they always would be. It was difficult to be social sometimes, but she was trying. She hadn't always put forth the effort to be social and get to know people. She was usually just pushed into it awkwardly. But this? This was feeling more natural and organic to her. Which was a good thing.

As he explained about his world, Elphaba listened intently. Other races? Could that mean... "This might sound like an odd question, but. Where you're from, can animals talk like humans can?" She looked at him, a bit of hope and wonder in her eyes and on her face. She was curious if there was any land other than Oz that had talking animals, and she wasn't passing up this chance to find out. "Other races? What kinds of other races?" Now Merlin was igniting her curiosity which could possibly be a dangerous thing because Elphaba was truly an insatiable creature and could ask him questions until he fell into a coma from them.

Her blush made him grin, almost proudly, and he wandered onward with her, feeling it was turning into an excellent walk. "True. Reading is an excellent way to expand the mind, to encounter new ideas and new thoughts, and to find whole new worlds of entertainment." He smiled as he thought on it.

"What is your favorite book, or type of book, the thing you most like to read?" He wanted to know, suddenly, wanted to learn more.

Merlin quirked a brow at her question. "There are some, those that are Fae in origin. The animals of the land itself, no, but there are enough Fae to bring stories to life when one wanders far from the normal haunts of men."

"I like immersing myself into new worlds of entertainment. When I was little, it was mostly to escape my life and find a better one somewhere else. The man that raised me was cruel to me, but my sister was the apple of his eye. So to me, books treated me better than the real world around me. But even as I originally thought of books as little more than an escape, now they are adventures and vessels of learning that I never tire of." The books she liked, she could read multiple times and not get tired of them.

At his question, she thought for some moments. "That's hard to answer, but I will have to say probably history. I also like reading historical fiction novels a lot. But history is always fascinating."

When Merlin said the word Fae, Elphaba was momentarily caught off-guard, though she didn't show it outwardly. Fiyero had called her Fae. But she had long since moved on from her feelings for Fiyero, so she didn't dwell on it. Instead, she focused on the rest of what Merlin had said. "I take it the Fae live in places such as forests or glades in places man does not normally travel in?"

Her words touched a chord in Merlin's soul and he smiled, gently squeezing her shoulder as he walked with her. "I am glad you had them when you needed them. Each book is a new treasure to me, for there is so much to learn and so many books now made. From the novels that seem endless to the guidebooks and textbooks of modern learning, it is hard to decide where to start first! Though the modern language was hard to read at first, I must admit, and the language hard to understand. A few spells and a few weeks of reading and listening solved that. Now I simply feel overwhelmed sometimes."

He smiled at her,a wry warmth in his eyes. "But it is a comfortable overwhelming, a good kind." He relished it, for it promised great things for his future.

He nodded again, smiling, at her answer. "History. Mmmm, a good choice, I think. Though I have noticed that many history books... contradict one another."

And he smiled to her, listening. "Mostly they are far from Earth now, in their own realms, but some few do live there. Far more than live among the people as they once did. And the days will come when none live among the people except the few outcasts. And the world would be stripped of that magic."

Then he glanced around, and a small smirk arose. "But only for awhile, I think. Only for awhile."

She gave him a small smile when he squeezed her shoulder. Elphaba still strongly resented her childhood, having to endure what Frexspar did, but she was alive and she was strong. Perhaps it was because of that experience that she was as strong as she was now. True, she might have better control over her magic and her telekinesis had Frexspar not forced her to not use them because of his zealous religious beliefs, but Elphaba wouldn't be the woman she was today if he hadn't been that way. Though at hearing how Merlin spoke of books, she couldn't help but get excited. Finally, someone else who saw books the way she did! "It is difficult to decide where to start! I tend to just grab several books from several genres at once and go from there. Though I'm glad you were able to come to understand the modern language. And I don't think it's a bad thing to be overwhelmed, it is a new place and time, it takes time to adjust to it. But you'll get there."

"Yes, they do, but I think that's one of the things I like about history. History isn't linear. It's experienced by many different people, so there will always be many different views of the same point in history. It is just like there's more than one side to every story. Everyone is unique and has their own views of something that happened. And really, history is just a collection of stories with many sides to each one with vastly differing details." Elphaba finished that with a little nod, asserting her point.

At hearing that one day magic might be gone from his world, she was more than a little taken aback. "A world without magic? I can't even imagine such a thing! Magic should always exist in some form or another!"

And Merlin felt very grateful for his upbringing and for the patience shown by Blaise with the young man who had spoken and cast magic by the time he was one year of age. He had been taught, protected, and shown the world as it was. And somehow in the doing, gained a love for it, and for learning.

"Aye milady. A starting point is not easy, which is why I have some twenty books in some state of read in my rooms,. and many more besides waiting to be cracked open." His smile was warm as he listened. "I hope I shall. I hope I shall indeed."

"Very true. I am still learning that about life and history, Life is much like that as well. Everything is more than one point of view." He smiled softly at her shock. "It will return, in time, but yes, for some time, there will be none, for there will be no room for it."

While Elphaba did still hate Frexspar for everything he'd put her through, she knew she wouldn't be who she was today without him. She probably wouldn't love books so much or be as smart as she was if he'd treated her the way he'd treated Nessa. So really, while the experience had been a horrible one, it was part of what helped her to be as she was today.

"There is nothing wrong with reading multiple books at once. I do just that quite frequently. In fact, if I'm ever reading only one book at a time, I'm probably sick." Elphaba smiled at him. "You will."

Nodding a bit, Elphaba found truth in that. "Life most certainly works the same way." Though when Merlin assured her that magic would return, she breathed a bit easier. "That is good to know that it would return again. I can't imagine a world without magic in any capacity."

Merlin smiled to her. "I will remember that. You are an intriguing woman. And you are intriguing in mind as well." He nodded. She sounded something like him, and yet different.

"No world can be without it entirely, not while life breathes and humanity still thinks. Humanity generates magic, but sometimes their thoughts lock it away." He sighed and nodded, eyes distant for a moment.

"I find, if I can find people like you here, then I shall be comfortable here."

And yet again, Elphaba blushed a bit, smiling a bit shyly. "Thanks. I don't think anyone's ever said that to me before." Not that Elphaba really kept track of compliments people gave her because she'd never felt like she deserved them before. But she was getting better about it now, which was the point, wasn't it?

Looking at Merlin, Elphaba tilted her head a bit. "Their thoughts lock it away? You mean such as when people don't believe in magic? Or are you speaking of something different?" She was curious, thus she felt she needed to ask.

The blush that was still on her cheeks deepened a bit at his words. "Well I can't say that there's anyone else like me, but I do hope you will be comfortable here." She looked up at him, then realized where they were. "Oh. That's the library. For your future reference." She pointed out the building across the street to him.

"Why not? Have they not paid attention?" He smiled to her. He was not trying to flirt, just curious. To him, saying what was true was just that.

He listened and considered her words well. "Both. When people disbelieve magic, they make it a little less, but there is more. When people stop hoping, stop having faith, in something, anything, they stop pushing out the magic into the world. When they do so, magic has a much harder time functioning. It requires a push from other sources, then, and thus is almost nonexistent."

He nodded as they6 walked, and grinned at her. "I feel I will be, milady. Yes indeed."

He grinned wider and peered at the library! "Aha! Thank you. It seems crowded cor this time of evening." He had never seen a place of learning so filled.

It made his blood sing and his cheeks heat and, as it did, he felt a wave of oddness, of warmth fill him. What was that?

Even though Merlin wasn't trying to flirt, Elphaba couldn't help but to redden further, biting her lower lip a bit. "No, I don't think they have. I'm usually to green for most people's tastes." Currently she was inwardly cursing the fact she wasn't green because at least her normal skin color could hide a blush, or at least hide it better than her current skin color did.

As he explained about magic being lost, Elphaba nodded a bit. It made sense, though it wasn't how magic worked in her world. "I actually kind of like that. In that, people create magic, or are magic. In which case anyone could weave magic simply by opening their hearts and minds to believe in it." She smiled. She might've been wrong with such an assumption, but it was a theory she liked. It was at least a better way of seeing it than how Frexspar had viewed it.

"You're welcome! People are always there, no matter what time of day. Sometimes it's quieter in the mornings or early afternoons when most people are at work or in school. I really enjoy it." So many books. Elphaba really was at home with herself within the walls of a library. She loved books and they loved her right back.

Her red cheeks made him grin, but he did sigh. "I do apologize if I embarrass you." He wanted nothing of the sort. He cared about her, more than he had thought he would. More than he now thought he should. But there you go.

"In my world, magic comes from three sources. The Divine, the Devilish, and Humanity. If Humans are open to magic, all other kinds flow easily. If they are not, they are sluggish, more dangerous."

He smiled at her. "The key is truly opening one's heart and banishing doubt. Doubt kills faith, and faith is the source of humanic magic."

"I will remember, and he bounced, then looked at her. His eyes glowed with human and ponderance.

"Thank you, dear lady." He inhaled, and his eyes felt hotter, warmer. As did all of him.

"No no, I'm not embarrassed. I'm just...not used to such compliments." Which she really wasn't. Yes she'd heard them before from Fiyero, and even Galinda had incessantly insisted she was beautiful, but Elphaba still found it a bit strange. She still didn't quite know how to accept such compliments without blushing. "I like it, though. Don't think I'm telling you to stop because I'm not. I like it." And now she was babbling slightly again.

It was fascinating to hear the magic had different sources in Merlin's world. Though she found the magic that came from humans to be most fascinating. After all, that was quite something. "Regardless of any world, people should keep their heart open and banish doubt." It was still something Elphaba herself struggled with at times, but then again, she struggled with a lot of things, she just had a horrible tendency to not say anything in those cases.

Looking at Merlin, Elphaba couldn't help but like that glow in his eyes and she smiled. "You're welcome, Merlin." And right then, she'd forgotten about what other destination they had.

"Ahhh." He smiled though, and grinned at her. "I like telling it to you. You inspire me, you make me want to tell you more of it."

He smirked and danced a jig at her.

"I believe you are right. People should embrace hope and light, and magic and love." His voice soared with passion as he walked with her, and glanced at her warmly.

"You are a guide and a welcome lady, a friend and more, perhaps. I feel... you make me feel rather more."
