Well, that was the second worst ten-day span of my life, thank you very much. The cats were certainly happy to see me again, so at least there's that (my thanks to to those who were able to care for them in my absence).

This whole experience has done nothing do much as make me even more curious of the magic in this place. I'd like to conduct interviews with anyone willing to discuss their magic with me; I've the most interest in magic regarding leylines or foresight, though I'm happy enough to talk any other sorts as well.

I am part of the coven, but it's not my magic from home, no. I'm a hedgewitch. Like the Magician's here, but the title isn't ours because we didn't learn magic from a school like Brakebills. To be fair, Brakebills can eat my ass and I'd like to throw the dean down a well and leave him there, unable to die but unable to leave. Also he'd only be able to potentially drink the cheapest alcohol that he doesn't like and eat his least favorite foods or maybe just the foods he was allergic to. But it's no big deal Brakebills isn't worth the bullshit, though. Especially not while Dean Fogg is in control of it.

And do you practice magic that is native to Vallo then?

There is no formal school for magic back in my home world; most magicians are taught by private tutours, though the title belongs to anyone who has magic in them.

I mean, yeah. That's the whole thing.

You're probably better off. I went to Brakebills and they decided I wasn't allowed to keep my memories of magic, so they brought someone in to take those memories from me and left me with the knowledge that magic existed. I taught myself everything I know and then stole my memories back when I got the chance. After everyone died fighting this asshole that wanted to be a god. Anyway. He's dead.

Was it difficult to learn, or was it similiar to the magic of your world?

That seems like a rather clumsy way to go about it. Why would they not remove your knowledge of magic as well?

I'm sorry to hear that so many people died fighting him.

They use sigils and usually your own blood. Except sometimes Onyx uses blood magic to ask permission to use animal blood.

The magic it takes to change a memory...or, I guess, overwrite it is a lot. And no one's ever successfully altered anyone's memory to change that much time. It's years of a life. It's hard enough changing just some of a person's memory.

Yeah. There were like...five people alive at the end of it? One of them that had come back from the dead and killed anyone that used magic. But then he died eventually, too and it was just Fogg, Creepy Romcom Guy, and me. And then Creepy Romcom guy and I left, so it was just Fogg. As it should be.

Like most of the magic in my world, blood serves to bind a contract. It can bind a tract of land to a magician and all his or her descendents, or it can serve to lock two magicians into blood-pledge.

Memory magic is tricky in my world as well. We have lethemint, which can erase memories up until two weeks depending on the dosage, but anything further away than that requires a good deal of power and precision, and can be dangerous if not done exactly right.

I'm very sorry to hear all that.

The only blood magic we had back home was about killing a bunch of people, but this is different. Thankfully.

Yeah. So amputated memories it was.

Eh. What else is new? Don’t worry about it. Helping people has steep consequences.

That sounds dreadful.

Life is much easier when one keeps to themself.

Generally speaking, yeah.

It is, but my girlfriend is kind of one of those helpers that gets into dangerous situations I can't leave her in, so...

Weird question now that you're here. You said that the land is tied to family by blood magic and that it tells you if someone is dying on your land. Do you guys have blood magic that links people to tell them when the other is in danger without the land bit? Easier than a text message when you might die.

We do not. Generally magic only works within close proximity. It tends to get weaker the further away from its source. It's been a common source of complaint for British magic, and makes things very inconvenient sometimes. This is true too of the aforementioned magic as well; if a magician is not on his property when someone dies on it, he'll not know.

Though we do have the Lockroom, where any British magician can be located by a strand of their hair which is taken once their magic manifests, and distance is not a problem in that case. Perhaps the inherit power in one's blood can overcome the inherit restrictions of distance. It could be the same principle that makes the blood-pledges so effective -- those will hold indefinitely even when the magicians who have made the pledge are far apart from one another.

[Insert another like, three paragraphs here about magic and the potential inherent qualities of blood in increasingly technical language here.]

Hm. Okay. I figured I’d ask. But I’ll see if Asetenarra or James have anything like that. I’ve used blood magic with my own blood for a protection amulet of sorts. It doesn’t work on everything, however. There were creatures prior that didn’t seem stopped by magical barriers. We have tattoos triggered by blood if we’re in danger - the coven - but I think something with less bloodletting and maybe simpler would work better.

Oh, sorry, I don't mean to say that it can't be done. In fact, I think I'd rather like the opportunity to give it a shot, if you'd allow me to.

I’m happy to try anyway. We can talk through it together. So she feels included.

My girlfriend, yes. Eleanor. She doesn’t have magic, but if I need James’s help, I will ask him.

I would be happy to work with him as well; it might be better to have two eyes on this anyway, especially as he magic here is so different. Does he create many spells himself?

We all created something for our initiations. My sigil is to boost magic collaboratively because collaborative magic is necessary to keep us from turning into niffins. Basically burning up from the inside out and becoming a creature of pure energy and no morals.
