Happy New Moon, assholes. This one's in Gemini during a Mercury retrograde, so fuck us, I guess (I took several astrology classes at my fancy magic school to break up the monotony of all the "don't eat your fellow students" classes).

...that's assuming the moon here is like the moon back home, which, fuck if I know.

Do you have any older siblings?

So you're competition is probably of a different sort. I was the youngest and then became the oldest in the worst way. I suppose I haven't forgotten what it was like before.

We don't really compete. It would make things...difficult. Especially for our mother. If there's something we both want we go after it as a team.

I'm sorry about your siblings.

Fair enough. My sister and I don't especially compete either, but I was referring more to the effects of an age difference in general. Did your parents not have different expectations for you both?

I don't deserv need your sympathy.

Not really. We're expected to live by pack rules, act like the children of the Alpha, and generally do something productive with our lives. But they generally did their best to make sure we didn't have different expectations placed on us.

Okay.

Well. You are lucky then.

In some ways, yes, definitely. If we both want to go after our mom's position we'll do it together.

Why, what was it like for you?

That would be allowed?

I was expected to take over the clan and to keep our family honor protected. Wei Wuxian and I were often pitted against each other and I was expected to be better, always.

I mean, if you go by tradition, no. But tradition also states that packs are basically men only, and you'd definitely never have a female Alpha. Things change. Or you get left behind.

They went harder on the kid that was meant to take over?

Sounds like things were already changing if your mother had the position. I am usually a proponent for tradition, but I have learned that some must change.

As it should be.

The previous Alpha before her knew it was better to pick his replacement based on intelligence, skill, and political awareness, rather than just who was better at killing. Most other packs still go by the later. Some traditions are meant to burn. In other packs the daughters of the Alpha are treated like commodities.

Makes sense. I guess there was more expectation on my brother and I compared to some of the younger pack members, but it's not guaranteed that either of us will take moms position when she retires.
