Harry followed the length of the semi-tublar slide with his eyes. He caught an occassional glimpse of a hand, fingers splayed wide, or a foot, kicked up in surprise. He was torn between apprehensive wincing and amused chuckling.

Then came Severus slipping of the end of the slide into the pool, with all the grace of someone having been pushed off a cliff. Harry held his breath as Severus resurfaced and turned to give a critical eye to the waterslide.

Tentatively, Harry asked, "Wanna go again?"

Snape, still eyeing the slide with a challenging gaze, responded, "Try and stop me."

"You kill me, Severus." His laughter had faded to chuckles.

"I love you too much for that." My words, though never spoken before, had finally fought their way out, wanting to be spoken to him.

The mirth fell from Harry's face, slowly melting off. He stared.

"Do you not want to hear me speak of it?"

He frowned lightly, his eyes growing red-rimmed and watery, his face a shade paler. But he didn't cry, as he rarely has...

"Has no one said that to you before?” I think I just…knew. As a vow, I whispered, “Get used to it.”

It was such a simple thing, and yet it gave Harry such joy. Severus’ own memories of doing this were so distant as to be almost non-existent, but he knew Harry relished recapturing lost moments of childhood.

Patiently he showed Harry how to unwind the string and hold the spool so that it could spin easily. Shrugging out of his bulky robes, Severus grabbed the brightly colored kite and prepared to run.

He gave no thought to his dignity as he tossed the kite into the air shouting, “Now!” The look of complete delight on Harry’s face was payment enough.

Mind blank except for the knowledge that karaoke was not this bad. At least the words are laid out on the screen, not originating from his mind.

Hands sweating, unsure of their purpose.

Mouth dry, making the inevitable more uncomfortable.

“Um, I call this piece,” he stared into black eyes, “My Master”.

“His words can be cruel
Painful to the core.
Yet his mouth is divine
I hunger for more.

His presence is dark,
foreboding and unholy.
Yet his touch is soft,
Loving me slowly.

“Oh shit! The toast is burning!” Harry made a mad dash towards the Muggle appliance, trying to pull out the black slices. “Severus, I told you to put it on the lowest setting. I suppose it could be worse.”

“How in the name of Merlin could it be worse?” Snape retorted, waving at the billowing black smoke. “This is the last time I let you talk me into ‘expanding my horizons’.”

“It could have set off the sprinkler system too.”

Suddenly, with a snick, the spigots released. Torrents of water cascaded down, drenching both men.

“Oops. I guess it’s worse.”

Shivering, he looked through an archway into the distance. Mist hung over the lake.

Warm breath flowed across his neck. He froze. A strong body pressed into his back. He drew his wand and turned around.

A slither of material and Auror Potter stood before him.

Potter moved slowly, pushing his wand aside and pressing him back into the stone. He did not ask permission; just pressed his lips to Snape’s.

Snape chose not to require it.

“It’s Harry. And yes, we should learn how to use them. What if we took a vacation to a Muggle destination, and had to blend in? What then?”

“I know how to cast spells surreptitiously, Harry. Besides, how difficult is it to use these Muggle devices anyhow?”

“Do you smell something?”

Snape sniffed. “I believe it’s something burning….”

They stared at each other in horror.

Ordinarily, everybody knew better than to mention either name in the proximity of Harry and Severus, but Harry's friends had finally started to grow comfortable in Severus's presence and it was late at night and the wine had been flowing freely, when somebody - probably Neville, but possibly Ron - uttered both forbidden names in the same sentence.

Sirius Black.

Albus Dumbledore.

The room fell silent, and Hermione bit her bottom lip, but for the first time, those names engendered no explosions. No shouting. There were no recriminations, no accusations, and no threats.

Severus took a deep breath.

Harry took Severus's hand.
