The door looked no better in daylight. Harry knocked – twice. Snape was in: he could tell.

He knocked again. The door wrenched open. "What?"

"I brought you these." Harry thrust the bouquet forward.

Snape looked at it as if it was the strangest thing he'd ever seen. The flowers were nicely wrapped with a silk ribbon around frilly paper.

"They're for you," Harry added foolishly. Why didn't Severus take them? Silly question – this had to be difficult.

A bony hand stretched out and grabbed the bouquet. "Thank you." Snape closed the door.

Gritting his teeth, Harry stared at flaking paint.
