The moment Stephen Cornfoot stepped through the stone arch and accepted death, the spell holding Diagon Alley inside it's own world vanished. All at once Ministry workers and family members began to apparate in, flooding the street in crowds and chaos.

Many stood back in confused horror at the open, misty gateway in the middle of the alley. The arch was simultaneously inviting and terrifying...

Stephen approached the gateway with the silver dagger in his hand. The stone arch towered above him, and he could hear the hushed voices calling to him from beyond the veil. No, not him. They were calling to Voldemort - or whatever remained of Voldemort inside him, twisted into him.

"I am the true master of death!" he called as the mist from the gate swept around him. Finally he would be reborn as Voldemort.

"You're planning on making your whole evil ruler speech to yourself, Stephen?" Michael asked, as casually as though he'd walked in on Stephen talking to himself in the mirror. "You have no cronies? No followers? Not even some snivelling, fearful weaklings hanging on your every word?" He crossed his arms over his chest and looked with some curiosity at the veil and the gate. "Are you sure your plan will work, Ste?"

I need to say goodbye to my friend )

There was a gentle rumble, like distant thunder. It built up slowly, though never seemed to reach the crescendo it promised. Instead it settled like static, until finally the air in the alley seemed to shimmer with the vibration of the sound. It lasted for less than a minute and then, without warning, it stopped.

In the stillness, an ancient archway of stone appeared the centre of Diagon Alley. Hanging within the arch was the Veil; a tattered curtain, fluttering and swaying very slightly as if it had been touched moments ago...

The Binding

[info]plagued_mods
[info]plagued_logs
There was no warning, no hint of what was going to happen the moment the clock struck midnight. All at once, everyone appeared standing, sitting or laying on the cobbles of Diagon Alley and Knockturn Alley. All those that lived there unconnected to the spell was removed in the same instant.

If you try to apparate away you will simply appear a few feet away within the alleys. If you look out of the door of The Leaky Cauldron you can see Charing Cross road, but attemping to walk through will result in you walking into a different random shop in Diagon or Knockturn Alley. Every other exit has apparently been blocked with an impassable, unbreakable brick wall. If you attempt to fly you will become disorientated and find yourself turned around heading back into the Alley.

There is no way out...

» There is strictly no communication with the outside world!
» If you weren't wearing or holding something, it didn't come with you.

The Curse

As soon as Augustus delivered Rosemerta to him, Stephen began to work. She was unconscious and after dripping a potion between her lips he ensured she would never wake up. He laid her out carefully on a table in the basement of his home and stripped away her clothing so he could reach her chest. He placed the tip of his wand between her breasts and began to chant.

Still beating, Rosemerta's heart was extracted from her body and placed within a wooden box onto which Stephen had spent most of his past week carving the required binding spell runes. His fingers were slick with Rosemerta's blood and the wood of his wand was glowing with a dull orange burn just as the whispered chant of the ancient magic reached its crescendo.

Voldemort reached out and turned the key to lock the beating heart away. He gripped the trembling wand in his hand and spoke the final words to seal the spell.
"Tenent vinculum!"

His wand splintered into shards and the spell reached out in every direction, seeking those related to the lifeblood that powered it and further, creeping through connections of love to reach everyone it could.

And when the binding was complete, the net was pulled taut and those trapped in it were dragged into the cage...

He had dosed Daphne's evening tea with a sleeping potion strong enough to keep her comatose for any disruption.

In the basement of the house Daphne hung delicately in the air, unconscious and unaware. He wrapped his fingers around her wrist and pulled her arm to him. Slowly and deliberately, he had pressed the tip of his wand into the Dark Mark seared into Daphne's skin.

It wasn't a general call. He had summoned one man to his side. Rodolphus Lestrange had appeared before him, wary and untrusting.

It hadn't taken long to discover that Rodolphus' own ambitions had lead him to attempt to fill the gap his master had left in the wake of his death. Rodolphus had always aimed high, and now he had power so close he was loathed to return to his role of servant. Why should he? This half trace of his master was weak and small. It had no power in his voice, no height or aura of supremacy. This was an echo and nothing more.

Rodolphus underestimated the spirit that inhabited Stephen's body and he paid dearly.

He had bound him and devoured every memory from Rodolphus Lestrange's mind. He had gorged on images of Voldemort standing amid his followers, summoning thralls to his bidding and commanding a reign of terror. He swelled with every remembered image and sound.

There was so much of him now, but it still wasn't enough. He was still weak; a sliver of himself. He needed more. And he needed to make sure there was no chance of his prey escaping him. He needed a trap.

The Ministry Protest

Discord has spread through the masses, and the time has come for the people to express their disapproval of the Ministry's most recent actions! Of course, a crowd of angry witches and wizards cannot be allowed to storm the Ministry and so all Floo entrances have been redirected to Diagon Alley. A small Auror presence has been put in place in order to keep the peace.

Disgruntled, the protesters take to the street to chant and demand the positive change they want to see. The cobbles are packed with people, some holding signs, others shooting sparks into the air or flying banners above the heads of those marching. The actual subject of the protest seems a little confused. Some are there specifically against the release of Lucius Malfoy, others against the Wizengamot and more against the DMLE.

All that matters is that you get a chance to be heard.

He could feel the cold of the Dementor as it swept towards him along the rooftop. The chill in the air would have sent shivers through anyone else, but Stephen's skin was almost as icy as that of the Dementor. It stopped level with him and the two of them regarded one another.

Slowly the Dementor raised its bony hand to offer something to the boy in front of it. Clutched in its fingers was a floating silvery strand of memory. Stephen smiled, and with the tip of his wand he lifted it free from the Dementors grip and lowered it into his mouth.

Voldemort stood in front of an army. Behind him was the hulking figure of Hagrid and in his arms... no! It couldn't be!

Stephen smiled as he remembered. He remembered the elation and power he'd felt in that moment. The fear and shock on their faces. He could almost feel his mouth forming the words he spoke to the crowd of Hogwart's defenders.

"Harry Potter is dead. From this day forth, you put your faith in me."

He stood a little taller. He felt a little more like himself.

The Last Day of School

The NEWT students were led down to the boathouse by Hagrid. From there they rode the same boats they had the first time they had ever approached the castle years before. The sunlight sparkled off the water around them as they drifted away from the school that had been their home.

On the platform the Hogwarts Express waits to take the students back to King's Cross Station, just as it always has done...

OOC:
- Please use this post for any threads occuring on the Hogwarts Express journey back to London!
- From this point on, no school!
- Please use cascading comments for threads
- Feel free to be in more than one thread, but don't spread yourself too thin!
- No smoking on the train!

Once again the usual decor of the Great Hall had been removed and replaced with heavy black drapes. The enchanted ceiling no longer showed the cloudy, grey, winter sky but simply the wooden beams and stone and the floating candles were no longer present.

Professor Flitwick approached the bronze owl lectern and silence fell over the hall immediately. They had seen this all play out before...

"Ladies and gentlemen, as I'm sure you're well aware by now, Miss Poppy Caxton was attacked and killed a few days ago. There is no sign of how the murderer entered the school, but the Aurors present believe the attack may have been from the Death Eater Bole. The Aurors have assured me they will not rest until they find the perpetrator.

Poppy was wonderful person. A great friend to many of you. And though you may have not been close to her during your school years, I'm sure her loss has affected you all. I know she will be greatly missed by each and every member of her house, as well as those of you who's lives she touched.

I really am so deeply, deeply, sorry."
