Spare some change?
Who: OPEN TO EVERYONE. PLEASE COME IN. :D
What: Dov got kicked out by Charlie, so now he's standing outside Pax Letale asking for donations. And being none too kind about his half-sister. Acting like a kicked puppy, mostly.
Where: Just outside the entrance to Pax.
When: Saturday, August 13. 5:15 PM.
Warnings: Uh... I'm gonna go ahead and say language.
Notes: It'd be especially awesome if someone could come in and tell Charlie what's been going on, too.

Humiliating. That'd be the best word for what Charlotte had done to him last night. He'd come to try and get answers, give answers, have some sort of better understanding of this half-sister he hadn't known about. And what did it get him? Thrown out by his collar. Literally. He'd sort of sat there for a few moments on the hallway floor in complete disbelief. After that, he'd gone back to his car, had a smoke (or two or three) and passed out in the back seat.

Upon checking his wallet when he woke up the next afternoon, he found he was a lot lower on funds than he originally thought. Meaning if he didn't cough up some cash fast, he'd be stranded in California for quite some time. And with the hostility he'd received so far, that wasn't exactly the best sounding plan. He just wanted to get back to Catskill, sell the house, get back into Brooklyn and go from there. But how the hell was he going to afford that?

Being babyfaced and young looking had its perks at times- coming across as being innocent and sweet being one of them. So for the past hour he'd been standing outside of his sister's apartment building, looking pouty and dejected. Spare some change? he asked whenever someone would come in or out of the building, his accent toned down, voice soft. My sister- Charlotte Fairica, she's in #103- she kicked me out onto the street and I need to get home to New York, can you please help me?

So far he'd made twenty dollars and he was spreading the good word of her being a total jerk. If he kept it up maybe he could get something to eat while he was at it.

Ben was actually on his way home after a night out that had turned into something more; he'd woken up half-dressed on a mate's floor, an unopened can of warm beer still in his hand and a toilet roll clutched in the other. As you do. After finally dragging himself up and out, he'd headed back to Pax with a sore head and a fuzzy tongue, planning to shower, change and perhaps get a few hours sleep before getting up to do it all again. What he hadn't expected to come across was someone begging outside the complex and he raised an eyebrow as he watched the younger man approaching someone leaving the building.

The last guy hadn't given him anything, looking more bewildered and frightened than anything and apologizing profusely as he hurried away. Sheesh. Dov stuffed his hands in his pockets, keeping his head down as part of the whole looking sad thing he was trying to pull off. He could spot someone coming toward the building; breathing in, Dov prepares himself for his whole act as the man gets closer.
"Hey, um... D'you think you could spare a buck or two? I'm flat broke and my sister kicked me out- Charlotte Fairica, d'you know her? She lives here. Anyway, I've gotta get back to New York, and..."

Elias palmed his keys, paused, then stared up at the apartment building. He was counting floors, although he didn't need to repeat the exercise again to find the row of windows he was looking for. 10 floors up. Wincing, he shook his head, then headed up toward the entryway. It was still early. He had enough time to collect a few key items and then head out for the evening. When 8 p.m. came, tonight, he had no intention of being anywhere close to this building -- or to floor ten.

Monumental. Failure.

Those were the two words that kept returning to his mind. Regardless of his utter defeat at the hands of Ms. St. Giles, however, he still felt terribly compelled toward her. He'd been having odd ... visions... in the evenings, visions that left his head splitting, and visions that he couldn't say for sure were real or imagined. What he did know is that he perversely didn't want them to stop -- and he couldn't endure being in this apartment building tonight at all.

He caught the two figures ahead but paid very little attention to them -- until he heard Charlie's last name spoken from the one he didn't recognize at all.

Elias slowed, then stopped a respectful distance from the two. He wouldn't deliberately intrude, but he was waiting -- clearly waiting -- until it was reasonable for him to ask just how he knew Charlie in the first place.

"You're gonna get back to New York on hand outs?" Now he didn't know the exact prices of flights or even petrol in this country, but he was pretty sure begging on the street didn't get you enough unless you were some sort of panhandling genius. This kid didn't come across as one at all. "What'd she kick you out for?"

"Well, with any luck..." Dov smiled, trying to exude that hopeful, innocent young soul sort of look. He was pretty sure only Disney characters could pull that off, but damn, he'd try his best. He wouldn't sing, though. Shit, maybe if he did, he could start busking and make money that way. Too bad he couldn't remember a word from Go the Distance anymore.
"Well- we're sort of... Long-lost siblings. Y'know? I thought that kind of stuff was just a movie thing. But uh... I come all the way out here, right, and she just freaks out on me and seriously throws me out of her apartment. And now I'm dead broke and--" He paused, looking for a minute as if he was about to choke up. Total bullshit. "I don't know how I'll get home."

You can't bullshit a bullshitter and Ben just happens to be rather adept in the ignoble art. He watches him closely, sure there's some thread of truth in his story but can't pick out which parts. The throwing out seems obvious enough, but surely there was some kind of reasoning behind it. "I'm fresh out of cold hard cash, but I'll key you back in if you want to go and take this to her."

"No," Elias said at that suggestion, stepping forward and nodding to Ben, whom he'd passed in the lobby before. He hadn't wanted to get involved. It was no concern of his. But, like Charlie and like Ms. St. Giles, there was something more to this one than he could immediately see. A reason, as of yet hidden, for him to step in. If he were being honest with himself, Elias knew he would have said something to this kid anyway -- but now that Charlie was involved, there was truly no question.

"He won't go to see her alone. I'll take him to her."

That way, if Charlie didn't want him around, Elias could be certain that she wasn't harrassed.

Dov wasn't exactly sure what he thought of this. God- he was going to get thrown out again, wasn't he? He was going to get thrown out, then beat up by this guy. Not that he wouldn't put up a fight, but shit, he was kinda too broke to really do much if he got hurt. Plus, they were probably friends. Who was he going to side with- his friend or some stranger begging outside the building?

"Uh... Thanks, man! She's um... Not being very diplomatic, ya know?"

"I should come!" he decided, suddenly. Well, it was bound to be fairly entertaining.

The smile came unbidden. Diplomatic. Elias had never seen Charlie diplomatic, ever. Granted, he had just recently met her acquaintance, but he felt relatively confident that he'd seen her as diplomatic as she would ever be -- which was to say, not at all. "Don't worry, kid," Elias said. "You're my guest when you walk through that door with me -- and my responsibility." It made little sense elsewise. After all, Charlie had already turned the boy out.

Parts of the story didn't make a lot of sense. If the kid had come all the way from New York, why hadn't he saved enough for the return? Was he running from something? And why had Charlie turned him away? She was rough and abrasive, but Elias got the sense that Charlie was also protective of the people she thought of as her own. Why would she... Well. That mystery and others would soon be uncovered, wouldn't they? "What's your name?" he asked the kid.

When his fellow resident piped up, Elias looked back at him and nodded. "Elias Sandoa," he said by way of introduction, extending his hand to him. "203. Sure, come along. Do you know Charlie as well?"

Dov had to smile a little at that, genuinely, not that fake sort of smile he'd been giving people all afternoon while he tried to snag some money from sympathetic residents. "Uh- thanks, man. Not quite sure what she might do if I went in alone again, ya know? Like, she literally grabbed me by the collar and threw me into the hall last night. Wasn't fun." His hand scratched at the mess of curls atop his head. He still had to wonder how she was that strong.

"Dov Cantor." He chewed his lip, still trying to determine whether this was going to end up a worse situation than it already was. What other options did he have, though? He raised an eyebrow as the other two men conversed. "Oh- shit. Does she go by Charlie? She never uh, said anythin' to me so... I called her Charlotte. Probably another thing that just y'know, made things worse. D'ya think first impressions are that important?" He grimaced.

"Ben Fuller," he clarified, shaking his hand in the same slightly awkward way he always did when offered one, had never been a hand-shaker. "I don't. But I'm neighbourly." And infinitely curious. He mightn't know Charlie yet, but he had to confess he was curious about this woman now.

Introductions done, Elias pulled his keys from his suit coat pocket and then pulled the door open for the other two behind him. It wasn't a long walk to Charlie's apartment door -- she was on the first floor after all -- but it was long enough for Elias to wonder just exactly what Dov's story really was.

And what Dov had done to anger Charlie enough for her to turn her back on him. The kid didn't seem like a bad seed. Then again... Charlie was tempestuous. It was possible Dov did not a thing.

What sort of name was Dov?

"Uh-- you're sure this is a good idea? I mean what if she like, freaks out on me again? I mean I wanna, but... Is she always like that?" Dov was almost... nervous. Almost. He didn't get nervous. Really. Especially not for some bitch he'd barely met who treated him like garbage the instant she opened the door. Sheesh. He wasn't nervous to talk to her again, because she definitely didn't mean a damn thing to him. No way.

They made a strange procession as they wandered in through the door, Elias in front, Dov in the centre and Ben bringing up the rear. "She'll have to freak out on all three of us?" he offered, as if that might dilute the whole anger thing.

His steps slowed as they entered the lobby, then halted. A hand scrubbed thoughtfully at the stubble on his chin from the long day behind him. Slowly, Elias turned and gave Dov a long, searching look. The kid looked harmless enough. And Elias wanted to help him. And, if he were to be believed, he was related to Charlie -- and that meant something, too.

But Elias was ignoring Dov's continued statement that Charlie really didn't want to see him. And then did it not become his responsibility not to bring him to Charlie again, when she was apparently very clear about what she wanted with Dov (which was to say, nothing)?

"Before we go farther," he finally said, "Tell me exactly what happened between you two."

He gestured toward the sitting area in the lobby. There was as good a place as any.

Dov folded his arms over his chest as he moved over to the sitting area of the lobby, sitting down and taking a deep breath. He was kind of worried that this guy-- Elias?-- was just going to tell him to screw off. After all, he seemed to know Charlotte-- erm, Charlie-- a lot better than he did, and probably ever would. Still, what other options did he have?

"Well, uh, I... Okay, so, this is kinda y'know, personal stuff but uh, whatever, right? Um... Okay. So last night, uh, was actually, uh... My first time meeting Charlie. 'Cause um, she's my sister, but only my half-sister. And uh, I guess me not meeting her before makes this sound like it's like, less of a big deal and stuff, but she's still my sister, right? I wanted to meet her and all. I mean I didn't even know I had a sister. I'm twenty-one, man. My parents never told me anything. But uh... Anyway, so I came from New York 'cause my ma died- well uh, our ma. I found out 'cause I guess she put a whole buncha stuff to Charlie in her will and so I wanted to know who the hell she was, right? And then it turns out she's my sister. Bit of a shock, lemme tell ya."

Dov rubbed his face with his hand, taking a moment's pause before starting again. "Anyway, so I get out there last night and come to talk to her, right? From the friggin' get go I thought she was gonna kill me. I gave her my birth certificate and pictures and stuff and just... waited in the hall. Then I guess she finally believed me and let me in for a little and we talked a bit, but then all of a sudden she just-- just grabs me by my collar and throws me out!" He sighed, looking up at Elias. "I mean I don't expect her to be my best friend or nothin' but c'mon. Plus she's got ma's locket, which yeah, it's legally hers to have, but I don't really like the idea of her havin' it if she doesn't really seem to care."

He seemed to have stumbled onto the set of a soap opera - Dov's sob story certainly seemed to have a ring of truth to it, but he was having a hard time imagining someone turfing him out that suddenly and it not being clear she was simply panicked by the sudden appearance of a long-lost half-sibling.

"All of a sudden?" he asked, raising his eyebrows.

Scrubbing his forehead with the back of his hand, Elias stared at the wall across from where he sat. If all this were the truth, then it wasn't so simple a thing as he had first imagined. He squinted.

"Why did you not prepare for the trip home?" he asked. His tone was flat, but there was nothing in it that accused; it was clear that Elias was asking the question simply to make sense of the rest of the story. He still couldn't understand why someone would make a journey to see a family member they'd never known about before, without preparing for the trip home.

But here he was.

"Yeah, all of a sudden. Like-- we were talkin' and then I guess she just got uh, tired of it or whatever and was all like 'I think it's time for you to go' and didn't even give me a chance to get up before she tossed me out! I swear, I dunno what I did, alright?" The whole sob story act was getting really hard to play- it was all true, but Dov couldn't keep his accent down or the whole soft voice thing either.

"Dude- I really did have the money to go home. Then my car decided to break down in like... the middle of fuckin' Nebraska. Had to pay for that and the shitty overpriced hotel too-- 'cause I've been sleepin' in my car the whole time but I could't really do that if they got it in the shop, ya know?" Dov let one hand slide into his jacket pocket, fingers running over the change he'd managed to bum off the building's tenants that day, then leaned back in his chair with a sigh.

"I dunno what I'm supposed to do, man."

"Sounds like you've got really shitty luck," he pointed out. Well, it had to be said, didn't it? If he'd truly been kicked out over nothing, had his car broken down and ended up wasting all his money on a hotel, that was piss-poor luck on a whole new level.

Glancing over to Ben, Elias tried to get a read off his neighbor. Was he believing the story? Elias had heard many terrible things in his life and had lived some of them, himself. Something about this kid drew him in, made him want to watch after him... but his cautious, analytical nature also demanded that every fact be uncovered before Elias proceed further.

It was difficult for Elias to switch to trying to read someone's personality and feelings when he was engaged in fact-finding. Brow furrowing, he turned halfway at the waist and waived down the concierge at the desk past the lobby. When the man came to him, he quietly asked for him to call Charlie out, if she were available, on request of Elias Sandoa, with his guest, Dov Cantor.

"Let's see if she's in," Elias said to the both of them.

There. If Charlie wanted to come, she would. And if not, well... Elias thought about his bank account. It was lighter than it had been in the past, thanks to a certain few gestures he'd made toward two particularly engaging women (in vastly different ways). But if worse came to worst, he was still in a good position to help this kid out. Or at least help him out of the state.

Charlie would be the one to determine Dov's fate. It wasn't quite fair, but Elias' allegiance thusfar was to the militant young woman rather than this waifish boy. He told himself this firmly, to guard against the softening he felt inside his chest.

"Is there no one at home that you can call?" Elias asked, while they waited. "A friend? Relative?"

Dov snorted and nodded to Ben. "Yeah, I'll say." It felt like things had been going steadily downhill since his mother had been killed, with no real sign that things would start looking up any time soon. His optimism on this whole... issue was starting to slip. If Charlie even came out, she wasn't going to be very happy and she definitely wasn't going to give him another chance. He'd scrape up some money somehow, go back to New York, and pretend the whole thing never happened and he didn't have a half-sister at all.

"D'ya really think she's gonna come out? I mean uh, ya know her better than me, obviously." Dov wondered if they were just wasting their time. His sister didn't seem too... Friendly? Lenient? Forgiving? Any of those, really. He sucked his bottom lip into his mouth, waiting. What if he just made things worse?

"Uh... I don't really got the kind of friends ya can depend on. More like acquaintances, ya know? All the real uh, 'dependable friends' we had kinda ducked out on us. And I don't got any family 'cept my dad and... he ain't goin' anywhere for another six years or so."

A freaking summons. It was like being back at basic, put through dozens of mindless drills only to be singled out because you were either too good or just slacking at the back of the group or for no real reason at all. For a moment Charlie toyed with not answering it and exiting the building in some other, more round about fashion - that's what back doors were for, after all.

She was dressed in her all black security uniform, hair up in a pony tail and was just making sure that Jack was fed and walked before leaving for work when the concierge politely informed her that her presence was desired (now that was a nice word, desired, not demanded) in the lobby. The request (that ol' concierge, he really knew how to turn a phrase) had come from none other than Elias, and for a moment she wondered if he had some new theory on the black out, or if there was something else that needed to be done to her apartment to safeguard it.

In the end, she decided it would be too much hassle to walk all the way around the building to get to her bike - they might see her through the glass front doors of the building, and what drama that might evoke later on she had no desire to deal with. So once she had all of her necessities in order (wallet, cell phone, keys, bike helmet and her jacket on over her security shirt), she closed up her apartment and walked the short distance to the lobby.

Elias was there, as predicted, but what she did not expect was the two other parties - one of them being Dov, whom she'd told to leave just last night. Her face registered her shock, which was quickly eaten up by anger. If she was about to be told off by Elias for kicking the boy out, well, wasn't he just sticking his nose where it didn't belong! And who was this other guy? Charlie didn't recognize him, and for the moment she swept all thought of him aside in favor of zeroing in on the two people who were instantly pissing her off.

"The fuck is this? I told you to leave," she started, ever so delicate in handling situations, directing the phrases toward Dov. "And what're you doin'? This is none of yer business," she continued, turning on Elias next.

Honestly, Ben was just quite happy not to have that aggressive stare turned on him, felt almost shielded by the two people she recognised and was highly pissed off with. Maybe he'd just step back a little, sink into the background and watch this rather than getting involved - one of Ben's mottos in life was that it was often better to observe than partake. He'd add an addendum to that: 'especially when a seriously pissed off woman seems to be involved'.

The atmosphere changed dramatically upon Charlie's entrance. Her anger saturated the air, set teeth on edge, and, for Elias, became the catalyst for something just as potent: disgust. When the fire of her fury turned itself on Elias, he met it with dark, cold iciness. The stone that had been making its way in his expression then solidified, but his eyes stayed violently expressive -- seething with contempt. The lids dropped a fraction of an inch as Charlie challenged him. He didn't turn away immediately, but after it was made clear that he both heard, and then ignored, her question, he looked back to Dov.

And at that moment, something changed in him. It was subtle. It was nothing so detectable as his expressionless face or shouting eyes. It began as a tugging in the center of his stomach, rose into his chest, then opened his mouth for him. "When did you last eat, Dov?" he asked. And then, swiftly checking the understated bit of metal on his wrist, he continued, "It's about that hour anyway. Let's grab something to eat. My treat. Ben, you're welcome to join us."

And only after he stood, did he look back at Charlie. "Apologies," he said, tonelessly, "For interrupting you. I see I was mistaken."

Dov clenched his jaw as Charlie entered, her displeasure at the sight of him seemingly just as strong as it was the night before. It hurt, but he wasn't going to let her know that. No one needed to know that. Who needs her, right? She's just some stuck-up... Rich bitch. Yeah. Don't need her around. He'd get back to New York somehow. He kept his breaths slow and controlled, trying his hardest to force any bit of emotion he could from his face but doing a poor job of it, brows furrowed, biting his lower lip.

He looked up as Elias turned around, surprised by the question. Why this guy seemed to care so much about him he didn't know, but he wasn't about to complain. "Uh... Yesterday afternoon?" Dov couldn't help but smile a little through his frustration, the promise of something that wasn't snack food from a gas station all too appealing. "Really? Thanks, man, I'm starvin'." At least he could forget about all of this family shit and get something to eat. An effort not totally wasted.

So they were going to drag her out here, and be surprised that she was upset? No, that's not how it was going to work, not at all. She looked from Elias to Dov and back again, disliking what she saw on both men's faces. Judgmental shit, which was entirely undeserved on her part - why Elias kept insisting on messing about in things that did not involve him was beyond her, and the safety measures on her apartment were one thing, but this, this was too personal.

What had Dov been doing? What had he said? How much did Elias know? Outwardly her face exhibited annoyance bordering on rage, but inside she could not handle all of this. Three people, two of which had expectations of her (in her mind, at least, Charlie was always quick to assume) and a third who she had no idea who he was and would much rather have not had present at all. It was all enough to enact what would easily be labeled as a 'freak out'.

"Hold the fuck up," she started, stepping forward and into Elias' space. "You don't get to drag me out here, and then fuckin' dismiss me because you don't like my fuckin' attitude. What the hell is this all about?" Charlie was never one to let things go easily, if at all - and now her temper was climbing fast, hiding the fear, the anger boiling over without preempt. "What did he tell you? 'Cause whatever it is, it's a fuckin' lie, I'll tell you that right now."

The same force that made him ask when Dov'd eaten only intensified when Elias first saw how the kid responded to Charlie -- and then how Dov responded to the offer for dinner. It. Hurt. The pain - not compassion, not pity, but pain - was what surprised Elias more than even Charlie's outrage. Lately, he felt protective over certain strangers that should have meant nothing to him. But unlike Charlie, this one wasn't resistant. This one actually accepted ... even asked, in his way. No, he had no reason to care. But. He. Did.

When Charlie stepped into Elias' personal space, Elias remained an unmovable wall. He stared down hard at the little firecracker, nothing in his face betraying his emotions -- save that ice-green stare that could have started fires.

"You told me that you sent him away, so clearly he is, as you said, none of your business, either. He --" Elias jabbed an index finger in Dov's general direction, "--told me he hasn't eaten in a day. He--" Elias twisted his wrist emphatically, still pointing toward the New Yorker, "--told me he would join me for dinner tonight. And he --" Elias set his hand far-too-calmly back at his side, "-- told me he was stranded here, not that it's any of your business. As for me, I have given you my apologies for quite clearly inconveniencing you with a matter it would seem is far beyond your desire to address. And, as it seems you are bound for work, I will excuse myself from your presence. Now."

And although the words said that he was excusing himself, the tone said that Charlie was excused. With that, Elias turned his back on Charlie and focused instead on the kid from New York. "Shall we?" he asked, waving an arm briefly toward the far side of the lobby, where the main exit waited.

Behind him, he had the sense that Charlie was ready to draw a weapon on him or Dov or both.

Dov was completely floored by Elias' reaction, to say the least. Eyes wide, he could only stare as this complete stranger was actually defending him. They'd met, what, ten minutes ago? People Dov had known for years and years hadn't defended him like this. Why did this guy care so much, anyway? He wasn't really sure how he felt about it. On one hand it was good, because hell, nobody else seemed to care much, but at the same time, why him? Somehow, though, it wasn't as creepy to Dov as he expected. Huh.

It took a second for Dov to even respond to Elias once the man had turned toward him again, mouth hanging open a little as he tried to process what had just occurred. "Uh... Uh, yeah, let's get outta here." Holy shit, he thought. This guy is a total badass! Part of him wanted to look back at Charlie, but at the same time he didn't want to risk... getting his eyes clawed out or whatever she might do.

Her jaw dropped open, completely ready to sling another curse-laden retort, but they were already turning away. She was probably going to be late for work (not that she really gave a shit, in the long run), and frustration made her curl her free hand into a fist. This was absolutely ridiculous - there was no reason for Elias to be doing this, and she wondered if he was acting like this out of spite for the fact that she hadn't readily accepted his odd gifts. Obviously whatever Dov had told Elias, it registered over Charlie herself, and she couldn't do anything but watch them walk away.

She snapped her jaw closed with an audible click of teeth, and followed them out the door, though not to give chase. Her motorcycle was in the same direction, though thankfully on the opposite side of the parking lot. Jerky, anger-laced motions got her helmet on and her things packed away safely for the quick ride; a kick to her starter got the bike going, and she was out of the parking lot, Pax Letale, and the situation that was quickly spiraling out of her control.
