lavender is sure that living is worse ([info]lavishly) wrote in [info]pandorarpg,

Characters: Lavender Brown & Adrian Pucey
Setting: Rising Loaf, sometime after 1pm
Rating: general public
Summary: Adrian comes around the bakery to say hello.

After wiping down her station all she had to do was load her latest batch -- peanut butter and blackberry jam -- into the display case and she was officially off the clock for the day. Normally that meant she would be heading home for a nap in the hopes of feeling like an actual person if she wanted to do something this evening, but she was sort of avoiding sleep as much as possible the past couple of days. Any time she managed to shut her eyes, it was never restful, and her normal nightmares this time of months were bad enough on top of whatever psychic event was happening - well, coffee, pepper up potions and concealer seemed like a far safer combination.

Between the lack of sleep and the emotional maelstrom of being at Hogwarts for Harry's funeral, Lavender Brown wasn't even close to at her best. Right now she was mostly just taking it a step at time and trying to not let things spin out of control, well, at least anymore than they already were. And really, maybe it was for the better that she hadn't remembered that Adrian Pucey, the really fit bloke from the gala when the world felt a little bit more normal, said he was going to stop by the shop.

If she had remembered, it would have been worse because the woman who was at the gala a few nights ago was not the same one at the bakery today. That woman was put together and charming, able to hide all of her insecurities behind a mask. Sure, she had ways to hide them in the day-to-day, but they weren't quite as good.

No, it was better to just focus on the display case, while the lunch time rush buzzed around here. She could be out of here in a few minutes and she would figure out what came after that when she got there.

Adrian needed a break. through no fault of their own, Harry's murder case has no new leads and he was getting frustrated. There was pressure coming from all sides to get this wrapped up as soon as possible, but they didn't even have a real suspect yet. Neville and Adrian were both certain Zacharias Smith hadn't done it, but so far they had no likely culprits.

Adrian decided to go clear his head and grab a bite to eat. Then he remembered he'd promised to stop by the bakery and see if Lavender Brown was who he thought she was. Now as a good a time as any. As he pulled on his jumper over his black shirt and headed out for his lunch break. The bakery wasn't far, especially not since Adrian decided just to Apparate right over.

He knew Lavender Brown by name, though if she hadn't been attacked by Fenrir Greyback, he might not even have known that much. He'd taken the time to look her up a bit more, and learned she was two years younger than him, and had been a Gryffindor, and one of Potter's crowd.

Pushing that thought from his mind, Adrian stepped inside the bakery, looking for a young blond woman and spotting one almost instantly. Far more confident and relaxed than Lavender seemed to be at the moment, Adrian approached and cleared his throat. "Excuse me. Are you Ms. Lavender Brown?"

She loaded the last item into the display before looking up at the man who asked for her. "I am Lavender," she said with an easy smile. It might have been some time since she worked the front, but it wasn't a difficult role to fall back into - she could deal with people as long as they didn't stare. Although she certainly preferred hiding out in the kitchen more.

Lavender wiped her hands on her apron out of habit more than need, taking a moment to see if she could place him. There was no obvious connection as to how she would know him. And although uncommon it wasn't unprecedented for someone to ask for her by name. Not that it brought her any comfort, that wouldn't come until she knew what this man in the handsome deep purple jumper wanted from her. "Can I help you with something?"

Ah he'd been right. The young woman was in fact Lavender Brown, and he felt certain this was the same woman he'd spoken to at the gala. "Yes, I've come to thank you for the basket of treats you sent to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement yesterday. I've also come to assure myself that you were, in fact, the woman I had been speaking to at the gala last week."

Adrian had no need to beat around the bush, to be coy or play games. He was straightforward and to the point.

Her eyes bugged just a little as she made the connection. However, she reigned it in quickly, chewing the inside of her cheek as she tried to process what might be happening right now. "There is no need to thank me for that, as I said, it was the least I could do and you know, within my realm of expertise." Really there had been more than enough baked goods to spare and she knew a few people at the DMLE who could use decent food.

But then there was the other part. The gala part. Lavender squashed the part of her that wanted to ask how she measured up to the girl at the gala. Except she wasn't sure if she wanted to hear the answer because maybe it was better if she just lied to herself. "So, Adrian, what can I do for you?"

"You didn't need to send us anything at all," Adrian countered. "I'd be remiss if I didn't at least extend a word of thanks." She didn't comment about the gala though, and he briefly wondered why. However, as she seemed to expect more from him than a mere courtesy visit, Adrian decided then to see what he could purchase.

"I'm not much for sweets, but there are some savory treats here too, I expect? I'd like to take a few things, so perhaps you could suggest a small variety. Ham and cheese scones, herb muffins, that sort of thing would likely go over well." His lips curved slightly. "Perhaps then you'll admit you were the young lady I mentioned?"

It was easier for her to handle this situation if he was just a customer making small talk. Anything more than that would have been far too complicated than she could handle. Lavender might not have liked it, but she knew her limits and knew even more so that today was not the day for pushing them. "Savory," she repeated, "While I have on good authority the cheddar scallion scones are quite tastey. Or if you're looking for something a bit heartier, Kyle can fix you up a sandwich on our handmade bread." There was soup as well, but Lavender didn't remember what today's offerings were so, she decided to just not bring them up.

She reached down to grab the rag to wipe down the counter - another habitual gesture and really just needing something to do with her hands. "And if I was the lady from the gala, that would mean you owed me a dance, only I didn't wear my dancing shoes today."

Adrian wasn't certain what he was reading in her body language. Hesitation perhaps, or even embarrassment. She might not have been so keen to be approached at her place of business after all, but the impression he had of her, first from the gala and then from the owls painted a confident woman. He wondered if it was simply that he'd caught her off guard.

"Cheddar scallion scones sound quite tasty. I've not had lunch yet so I'll take you up on the suggestion of a sandwich, but I think I'll take the scones home with me as well."

Ah, there it was. She addressed him regarding that gala and he nodded. "If you had worn them, I'd have been quite surprised, not to mention curious as to why." He glanced over to Kyle but made no move just yet to actually go request is sandwich.

On a more normal day Lavender totally would have made a quip about looking absolutely fabulous in a pair of heels as she literally got to dance around the kitchen in the early hours of the morning. Instead she just allowed herself a small smile at the thought. "Well, that's me, full of surprises."

Adrian might hadn't caught Kyle's attention, but at that moment her aunt came out from the back tying her apron around her waste. "Lavender, aren't you off work now?" She glanced over at her name being called. Merete continued, a smile growing on her face and Lavender knew that look. It meddling was about to happen - although usually with the best intent. "Why don't I pull together something for you and your friend here and you can actually eat a proper lunch?"

This time was no different. And really far less subtle than what she was used to. A bit surprised by the offer she glanced over at Adrian as if to apologize for imposing, when if anything she was the one straddling an uncomfortable position.

Adrian recognised that tactic, but only because his mother employed it just as well, though she was frequently a good deal less subtle about it herself. And just as he often did, Adrian accepted because he disliked being unnecessarily rude to someone, especially a woman. His mother had instilled that in him just as much as she'd instilled a hatred form her tactics in general.

"Please, I wouldn't mind the company if, you wouldn't mind joining me." He easily brushed aside her apologetic look; she had nothing to apologise for. "Why don't I find us a seat while you finish up the end of your shift?" That ought to give her some time to compose herself while lunch got underway.

"That sounds like a plan," she said with a smile that verged on polite because with the audience she couldn't really do anything more and her aunt would expect no less. Worse case she would bring him over whatever he ordered for lunch and they could leave it at that. In fact, that was probably the best case because then she wouldn't have to fumble through this.

"I'm sure Merete will be happy to take your order and I'll come find you a few minutes." Her aunt, however, most certainly received a glare with the expectation that there would be words later. Not one to linger and without a need to place her own order, Lavender ducked back into the kitchen. All she really needed to do was hang up her apron, wash her hands again and letting down her hair might help her feel a bit less exposed - not that it would necessarily make her feel better.

Adrian watched her go off and placed his order as suggested with Merete. She seemed pleasant, quite polite, and didn't seem to have the underpinning of plotting malevolence that his mother had, but he was no less suspicious of ulterior motives. But then. Adrian was frequently suspicious of anyone for ulterior motives.

He took his seat, his thought invariably going back to the case he was working. He'd managed to get some sleep thanks to the potions he'd purchased at Bobbin's, and had even given on to his mother. She slept without dreaming, but when she awoke, had a vision early that morning, much like the waking terrors some other folks recounted having. Adrian didn't know what was going on. He didn't like when he didn't know what was going on.

He was still in his reverie when his ordered cup of coffee was placed in front of him and he roused himself to drink as he waited for Lavender.

More than once in only the span of a few minutes she imagined how she might get out of this. She barely knew Adrian Pucey save from an interesting conversation at the gala and as one of the older quidditch players at school, it hardly made him a friend. But then again it was just lunch. And lunch dates, not that it was that this was more like lunch meddling was between friends.

Friends she might be able to handle a little bit more. Although it would have been easier if he wasn't so fit.

She waited until their orders were finished being made to bring them to the table herself - might as well save someone the trip and the excuse to eavesdrop. "So, I'm guessing you probably weren't expecting to be nudged into having lunch with me when you dropped by the shop today," she said setting down the plates on the table before taking the seat. "But I suppose that is a side effect of a family business."

Adrian looked up when Lavender returned and stood when she approached, sitting down as she did. "To be honest, no I did not. I didn't much expect to have time to have a sit down lunch at all, but I didn't want to be rude." He'd simply ordered a sandwich and the coffee. It would be enough to get him by the rest of the day. "But I've gotten accustomed to family insisting things of this nature. It's a bit refreshing to see I'm not alone in that."

He went for his sandwich, pleased to find the bread slightly warm and very tasty. He actually liked the bread better than the meats and cheese between it. Fresh-baked indeed. He might have to return here if only for the baked goods.

"You're not like obligated to stay or anything. I mean I'm sure you're busy with..." She paused motioning her hands to indicate 'everything.' There was certainly a lot happening in the world these days - far more than she wanted to have to deal with first hand, but such was life.

Lavender started picking apart her sandwich, not that she had anything against it, just that didn't know how to eat in front of Adrian. And really it was so much easier to just fill the silence with babble. "Aunt Merete is just used to watching out for me I guess, she's mostly good people, but," Lavender paused shaking her head, "I think any time she catches me talking to someone for more than a few seconds she just goes ahead and jumps to these conclusions, but like you said I guess it's just family being family, always sure they know what's best."

Adrian actually smiled. "I'm aware," he replied, "but as I do need to eat and I did come to speak with you as well, it's productive to do both at once, isn't it? I'm busy, yes but if I don't get a clear head from time to time," he shrugged one shoulder and went for his coffee.

He listened to her speak as he sipped it. "Ah, yes. She's simply looking out for your best interests. She wants you to be happy?" His mother made similar claims but he didn't believe them. He wondered if Lavender's Merete was more sincere than his mother. "They do at that. Sometimes that is the case, but often I find it isn't at all."

"Yes, they want me to be happy," she said agreeing with him. "Which I think often times to them means not alone." That might have been a bit too much to share, but sometimes the ramble took her to places she didn't always want. It was a risk, but usually an easily managed one.

"But you wanted to speak with me? In like an official capacity or an unofficial one?" Lavender wasn't sure which was better. If it was official it made it easier to deal with, but even then she couldn't deny the fact that a part of her wanted it to be unofficially too.

"Not everyone's happiness manifests the same way," Adrian responded thoughtfully. He briefly returned his attention to his lunch. chewing and swallowing before responding to Lavender's next questions. "Actually, both. I did want to simply come satisfy my own curiosity, but I've learned a bit more since we first spoke. You're running some sort of database regarding these nightmares people are having aren't you? I'm impressed with your initiative. I think it's a very good idea, having that all in one place."

Not to mention he wanted to know what, if anything, the database had turned up in the way of 'coincidences'.

A bit of both made it a little more complicated because she didn't really know where she stood on the whole thing. Lavender took a moment to consider her sandwich, decided that she should at least try to eat and it gave her time to weigh her approaches.

"Well, I've always sort of dabbled in divination." That was the easy bits, general public knowledge that anyone who knew her at school wouldn't be surprised to find out. Although half of them wouldn't take it seriously because it was her, but even getting half of the information was better than not knowing. "And I mean I'm having the nightmares myself, so I would sort of like to get to the bottom of things and you know maybe get a decent night's sleep again."

Divination. Adrian didn't put any stock into it at all. He found it too imprecise, too full of mystical symbols and in his opinion, guesswork. He'd never see a true seer in the grips of a vision, and even if he had, he'd have likely written it off as stuff and nonsense as well. He did, however, believe in instinct, in gut feelings, and so long as he could tell himself that the thoughts and ideas gleaned from divination were manifestations of someone's instinct he could manage it. He kept his face completely neutral, expression unchanging when she mentioned it. There were some things he could not quite explain, after all.

However, his façade slipped when she mentioned she was having the nightmares herself. "Ms. Brown, pardon me if this seems too personal, but when you began having recurring nightmares, did you find, upon your person, a black spot that had not been there previously?" He'd paused with his coffee cup halfway to his mouth.

Lavender Brown was a believer, so it was probably best that he didn't voice any of his opinion. Not that she hadn't come up against that sort of thing before. She knew better than to not trust her instinct, Lavender knew that things didn't just happened out of nowhere. There was always a force behind it. Some people called it God, free will, karma...Lavender had never been so concerned with names as long as she had a way to understand it.

"A black spot?" She thought of her bruise that wasn't a bruise. And how that sort of thing had been brought up before. But she didn't give much thought to it. It was easy for her to run into a piece of a equipment in the back or even just sleep funny and have a spot. Without doing it intentionally she reached to cover the upper part of her arm where she had found such a mark. "I do have something, but I mean...I didn't think it was anything to worry about."

Her body always did all sorts of weird things this time of the month. So really a spot wasn't really that alarming, growing a tail or fur, well, then she would have a problem. "Do you think it should be something I should worry about? Do you know of other people with spots?"

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Adrian watched her carefully, measuring her response to his question. He saw when she covered her arm, and presumed that's where her mark was. "I'm not certain it's something to worry about exactly. However, as far as I've been able to determine, everyone suffering these nightmares has a spot that's turned up without explanation. A black mark that doesn't hurt, doesn't come off, and just simply showed up. Does that sound like yours?"

Adrian sipped his coffee again as he waited for her response. He hadn't expected the conversation to go this way at all, but now he was glad he'd come out to talk to her. He wondered if she'd had any experiences that could shed some light. He really shouldn't even be focused on the nightmares, not with Harry's case still looming, but he couldn't shake the need to know.

"I haven't really tried to take it off but yes, I suppose so." Now she was definitely having her healer look at it tomorrow. And hopefully get rid of the damn spot too. Even if it didn't come off easy, someone had to figure it out. She didn't want it anymore, not if it was connected to the nightmares. Maybe then they could be gone.

If she weren't wearing long sleeves she would have been tempted to pull up her sleeve in show him. (Although maybe only on the condition that he showed her his.) "Why? Do you have one too?" Was he one of them or someone looking on? Lavender needed to know now, figure out why he cared, if he cared at all.

"I don't have one," he replied. "And I haven't been having nightmares. However, my mother has and so have a few coworkers and associates." He didn't ask to see her mark, instead slightly shifting the conversation.

"I don't need specifics, and I'd rather not make you think about it in depth, but could you confirm that your nightmares are...well, could be considered much like torture?" His tone gentled a little, as best he could. He wasn't exactly the best with empathy.

"This isn't some kind of official report you're going about collecting, is it?" There was a sort of tone to how this lunch was going that didn't sit with her right. Although that could have just been a side effect of the topic of conversation. It wasn't like the nightmares something that people were particularly verbose. From her own and the others she read, they were all violent and gross, really making her standard nightmares pale in comparison.

What she wouldn't give to just have the standard nightmare of her becoming a monster and ripping her friends apart.

Shaking her head. "But I guess it could be torture, certainly not anything pleasant like and it feels real, but not in that it doesn't always feel like me, but it still feels."

Adrian shook his head. "Not at all. Off the record. Someone is investigating it, but not my department. I will not pass along any information you tell me, not with your name attached at least. But if I find a connection that I think others should know would not be able to simply sit on it."

He picked up his sandwich again, but didn't move to eat it. "You're not the only one worried, Ms. Brown. I think your database might provide some insight and possibly even some support to those affected." Perhaps they nightmare sufferers should meet to discuss at some point.

"I asked that because the nature of the dreams - nightmares rather - seem to be similar as well." Adrian shook his head. "I apologise. I didn't mean to take a simple lunch conversation in this direction." He paused for a moment and then suddenly asked, "How long have you been baking?" Changing the subject to something she enjoyed might help.

She couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity in conversation change. One moment she was wishing for nightmares of eating her friends instead of being eaten alive by pixies and now he wanted to know about her baking. It was just too much. Lavender was overcome with a sort of nervous, awkward, but honest laughter that even managed to catch the attention of a few of the people nearby.

"I'm sorry, it's just-" She waved her hands trying to pull herself together. "I mean, well, quite the non sequitur there." Lavender would call it for what it was because that seemed the far interesting point of conversation, rather than her history with baking. At least for her anyway.

Adrian stared at lavender as she laughed, surprised at her reaction. Finally a rueful smile crossed his own features. "I suppose there wasn't any sort of segue there. I just didn't want to continue such a heavy topic over such a delicious lunch. I thought I out to ask about something you seem to enjoy."

It had been a very poor attempt to change the subject but his original intention had still been accomplished: she was not thinking about terrible nightmares now.

Except that the story how she got into baking wasn't exactly a better topic. It was just trading one horror for another, but at least this one was familiar. "A few years now, it was something I sort of fell into." Lavender swept her hair back behind her hair, bringing those scars back into view. She didn't think they gave her any sort of character, it was a reminder of what she was now and what she couldn't be.

"You met my aunt who runs the business and my uncle makes most of the bread. So I guess it's a family thing." Only her mum directed theatre and neither her father or sisters seemed to have any talent or interest in baking.

Adrian saw the scars. He however, made no mention of them, nor did he shift his focus to them. He knew what they were and why they were there. He had researched her a bit, learned she'd been attacked by Greyback about five year ago, during the war. And she survived. Few of his victims did. As far as he could make out, she hadn't been bitten, and wasn't a werewolf, which was a blessing.

Ahh, Merete is your aunt then. I wasn't exactly certain of the relations. I suppose it's nice to be in the family business and actually enjoy doing so. In too many cases, families expect you to be a part of it and you must either disappoint them by choosing your own road, or submit and be quite miserable. It's nice to know there is that third option." He finished the last of his sandwich and turned back to his coffee.

"That's what older siblings are for, well one of the things at least." Or in her case, much older siblings who she didn't always like. Before Lavender had even thought about her OWLs, Libby was on the path to taking over the Seaside Guest House. And of course there was Eliza, prefect beautiful smart Eliza who was a healer. While Lavender was a baker, but at least she was good baker.

"I take it you didn't go into the family business then?" Lavender didn't know a thing about his family, but they were on the topic, so it seemed like the sort of thing to ask. Especially because working for the Department of Magical Law Enforcement didn't exactly seem to be a family business sort of venture.

He finished the last of his coffee and set down the empty mug. "I however chose to do what i wanted and felt I could do well, as well as contribute something." not to mention attempt to clean up his family name and distance himself from the Yaxley side.

"Unfortunately, I'll have to be getting back to the office." Every minute he wasn't working Harry's murder case was another minute it went unsolved.

"Of course." She really didn't want to keep him any longer than she already had. He had been a pretty good sport about the whole thing. And it hadn't been completely horrible, or at least she didn't think so and that counted as a win in her book. Well, unless her aunt decided that having one lunch with a man actually meant something and there would more prodding about it later, but she would deal with that when it came. There was no sense worrying about it now.

"Thanks for indulging my aunt and staying for lunch." Not that she had eaten much of hers, but she was finished work for the day and in no rush to go anywhere. "It was nice to meet the man behind the mask." She offered him a small smile, hoping that even if she didn't live up to expectations that it wasn't horrible or unwanted experience for him.
