Ainsley shrugs a shoulder, but doesn't try to argue the point any further. Her thumb has taken to brushing lightly across his knuckles at this point, but she can't seem to bring herself to look away from his face. "I was, yes. I couldn't sleep, I just felt... restless all the time. Like there was someplace I needed to be," she finds herself leaning closer to him, and something is wrong with that, but she can't seem to care at that moment, "but I couldn't figure out where, or I couldn't remember. And you were being kind, keeping me company for so many of those nights. Why weren't you sleeping?"

"Er, a lot of reasons. I might be affected too, though because I've been restless and agitated a lot lately."

Oh Merlin is Fraser's girlfriend about to mack on him in public?

"Probably we both need to get checked again tomorrow."

Mel is not the magnetic one in his friend circle! That's Micah who everyone wants to be casual around, and Fraser who's better looking and younger and doesn't have a Death Eater name. This is not how it happens?

She's gorgeous and all but ... this is not how it happens!

"But you don't feel that now, do you?"

If she wanted to, she could... she could...

I might be affected too. Affected.

A seed of doubt. She drops her gaze to their hands, and then goes very still, almost frozen.

Because Ainsley's holding her boyfriend's cousin/best friend's hand in a crowded rival team's Owner's box, and she's pretty sure she was about to kiss him for half of the Scottish wizarding population to see. She wants to pull away further, wants to find Fraser and beg him to take her home (because she's not so sure she could Apparate right now anyway), but the idea of letting go of Mel's hand fills her with a sense of dread so strong that it sends a sharp pain through her stomach.

"Yes," she says quietly, almost choking on the words, "we should."

"But first maybe I ought to find my niece," Mel says, because he's now alarmed about the missing toddler who did not come back for cheese bread. He gets up and his hand slides out of Ainsley's.

Ainsley continues to sit there for a moment, eyes still locked on her hand, and then she somehow manages to get to her feet and calmly walk back to where she'd been sitting before, and even to engage in polite conversation and take in the rest of the game.

But her insides are coiled tight again, and the sense of abject loss leaves her feeling hollow and broken.

Mel makes his escape to find his niece

Because he is a son of the Sacred Twenty-Eight, he does not go hide in the loo and bang his head against the stall door, even if that's what seems like the most productive course of action.

I AM SO FUCKED, he does not say.

AND NOT IN THE GOOD WAY.

If there’s a dog around, Iona has probably found it. Or she found Nobby Leach.
